Character: Mari Makinami Illustrious | [personal profile] motivenotfound
Badge/Gym Leader: Zephyr Badge/Falkner
Elite/Regular: Regular Team
Team: Roster.
Battle Details: This is Mari's first badge, and she's not nervous! No, really, she isn't. Because she's leading with Baragon. She's figured out his Rivalry ability/issue, and as extra motivation, she's told him ahead of time that if he starts struggling, she'll swap him out with Gamera. Which isn't reassurance. It's a threat.

And just to spice things up, she's having Baragon lead with Flatter--a move that boosts Noctowl's alreasdy hefty Special Attack but instantly confuses it. This is extra ballsy because Noctowl is notorious for having Psychic moves, which Baragon is weak to. Baragon, however, has Captivate, which lowers the enemy's Special Attack two stages (just like Flatter RAISES that Special Attack two stages) if the opponent is the opposite gender, and Ice Beam, which Noctowl is weak to. The gambit--such as it is--is to use Noctowl's Confusion to give Baragon an opportunity to drop that Special Attack back down if it's a lady bird, and then hit hard with Ice Beam. Hopefully hard enough--or often enough--to drop Noctowl before Baragon gets mind-nuked by a spooky owl.

If Noctowl's not a lady bird, then Rivalry boosts Baragon's Attack and Special Attack by 25%, so either way there's a strategy.

Assuming Baragon makes it through, he'll be applying the same strategy to Honchkrow. Maybe even Pidgeot, although Mari is not exactly sure that win is possible.

If not, it's Gamera's turn, and Baragon will just have to git good work harder to surpass his real rival next time!

Gamera's strategy is a lot, lot simpler.

The plan looks like this: Iron Defence -> Rain Dance -> Shell Smash -> Hydro Pump.

The low accuracy of Hydro Pump is offset by its sheer power--Rain Dance boosts its already massive base power by a whopping 50%, meaning that with STAB, Special Attack boost from Shell Smash, and Gamera's level advantage, it may only take one good shot to take Pidgeot down.

Which is all well and good, hopefully. But. During the temple exploration, Mari befriended Sir Joestar... and after discovering a truly alarming diving suit that she couldn't NOT put on once she saw it, she taught him the fine art of the selfie. For her first gym battle, she brought him along for company, and during this match, Mari and Jonathan will be taking selfies, for fun. They will also take selfies after. With Falkner. Whether he likes it or not.
