Armin will start this fight off with Boris his Dewpider. Now, Dewpider does have a weakness to ground attacks, and Rhyhorn is partially a ground type, but Boris has a little trick up one of his six sleeves (spider pokemon don’t have eight legs. This is weird). You see, Boris’ ability is Water Bubble. This means any water type move is doubled in power. In addition to this, Boris knows the move Rain Dance. This will increase the power of any water type moves by an additional 50%. And as Boris is holding a Damp Rock, this will increase the duration of Rain Dance to eight turns.
So, that is the standard move damage + STAB damage (as he is a water type) + the doubled damage from his Water Bubble ability + the increased power of the rain. For eight turns.
Of, and this is on top of Rhyhorn’s 4x weakness to water type attacks.
I am sorry, this technique is vile and cruel and Armin loves it.
So, anyway. Boris will enter the field and immediately use Rain Dance. After that, the whole strategy will basically be to spam the most powerful water type moves he knows. This will be Surf and Bubblebeam until Rhyhorn goes down.
Golem (lvl 32) VS Dewpider (lvl 40)
Next up is Golem. Chances are that Boris will still be out (perhaps a little battered and bruised, but still there). If it is still raining, he will immediately go back to using power water type moves. If the rain stops, he will switch to using Rain Dance to bring it out again, before going back to the watery, watery destruction.
Onix (lvl 35) VS Shiinotic (lvl 49)
Now, it is possible Boris is still standing at this point. But as Armin is a big softy who doesn’t want his pokemon to fight to the death faint, he’ll withdraw him and bring out Gus the Shiinotic. Onix has a 4x weakness to grass type moves, and Gus is a grass type.
He’s also really kind of creepy with his long, long fingers and staring dark eyes and the fact that he doesn’t make a single sound, but hopefully Onix won’t be bothered by that.
Anyway, the strategy for Gus will be rather simple. It is called Giga Drain. Which he will basically us non-stop (well, five turns, at least) on Onix, both damaging it and healing himself. Should the fight last more than five turns, Gus will downgrade to using Mega Drain. And finally to Absorb should it come to that. Also, one important note: Gus’ ability is Effect Spore. This means that should Onix use any physical attacks against it, it may be poisoned/paralysed/put to sleep.
Armin will also be bringing Bastian the Kingler to this gym in case something goes terribly wrong somewhere.
Going to start strong against Exeggutor with Octavius the Dhelmise.
Exeggutor is weak to ghost attacks. Dhelmise not only is a ghost type, but it is also resistant to grass type attacks, which covers one of Exeggutor’s types.
Armin will be focussing on Dhelmise’s ghost type attacks. This means he’ll mostly be using Astonish (30% chance of making its target flinch), Phantom Force (user vanishes on one turn before striking the next, even if a target protects itself) and Shadow Ball (20% chance of lowering spell def). He will stay on this strategy until Exeggutor goes down.
Machamp (lvl 66) VS Noctowl (lvl 100)
For the next match, Armin will withdraw his Dhelmise and instead bring out his Noctowl Amadeus.
Machamp is a fighting type and as such is weak to psychic type moves. Noctowl has no particular weaknesses to Machamp and knows several psychic type moves.
Armin will first attempt to put Machamp to sleep using Amadeus’ Hypnosis (60% chance of sleep). Once he is asleep, Amadeus will either us Dream Eater (if it has any lost HP to heal) or Psychic (10% chance of loving spcl def). If Machamp wakes up, Amadeus will switch to using Hypnosis again. Should Machamp deal any significant damage to Amadeus that he cannot heal just from using Dream Eater, Armin will order the Noctowl to use Roost to restore its HP. And then it is back to the ol’ Hypnosis -> Dream Eater/Psychic combo. He might also toss in a random Confusion (10% chance of confusion) or Extrasensory (10% chance of flinch) until Machamp goes down.
Rhydon (lvl 67) VS Dhelmise (lvl 75)
For this match, Armin will withdraw Noctowl and bring his Dhelmise back out again. Should Dhelmise be significantly injured from his previous match, Armin will use the first turn to heal him.
Now, for this match, Armin won’t be depending on Octavius’ ghost type attacks. Rather, Rhydon has weakness to steel attacks and 4x weakness to grass type attacks. Octavius is a Dhelmise, so he is part grass type. In addition, he has the ability Steelwork, which means his steel type attacks are boosted by 50%
For this match, Armin will first focus on having Octavius use his grass-type moves. This means Power Whip and Energy ball (10% chance of lowering spcl def). Additionally, should Octavius start losing HP, he’ll throw in a Giga Drain or two to replenish that. And he’ll keep it up until Rhydon goes down.
Gyarados (lvl 68) VS Voltorb (lvl 100)
For this match, Armin will withdraw Octavius and bring out Circinus the Voltorb.
This one is really a no brainer. Gyarados, the poor thing has 4x weaknesses to Electricity. Circinus, being a voltorb, is all electricity.
Armin doesn’t really have a fancy strategy for this one. The plan is simply to hit quick and hit hard. He’ll be using thunder on Blue’s Gyarados until it goes down.
Pidgeot (lvl 69) VS Voltorb (lvl 100)
Armin will leave Circinus into play for this match. Pidgeot might not be as weak to electricity as Gyarados was, but still, pretty weak.
Again, no fancy strategy for this match. Just hit the bird hard and fast with every heavy electric attack he can think of.
Arcanine (lvl 70) VS Binacle (lvl 70)
For the final match, Armin will withdraw Circinus (good job, buddy) and bring out his final pokemon: Pallas/Perses the Binacle.
Arcanine is weak to both Rock and Water. Binacle is a rock and water type. So not only does Binacle have the two types Arcanine is weak too, in addition, Binacle is very resistant to both Fire and Normal attack, which is most of Arcanine’s roster.
Seeing as this is the final fight, Armin is going to pull out all the stops, knowing he won’t need to face another pokemon after this. To start off, Armin will have his Binacle use Rock Polish to boost its speed. After doing this twice, he’ll switch to having Binacle use Razor Shell, hoping it will lower Arcanine’s defence. Once that is done, here comes the Clamp, With the boosted speed, he hopes Binacle will be able to get the drop on Arcanine, thereby making it unable to attack while it gets clamped down on. And with Arcanine’s lowered defence and weakness, he hopes for a good bit of damage from this. He’ll keep on using these attacks, along with Ancient Power and surf until Arcanine is defeated.
Should Arcanine manage to defeat Binacle, Armin will try to finish off the fight either with his Voltorb or his Noctowl, mostly depending on their superior levels.
