Personality:
Janey Springs is, like all of the characters in the Borderlands universe, introduced with a title card. Hers reads, “Black marketer. Heart of gold.” And that's exactly what she is. Janey genuinely likes people. She's been isolated and alone for so long that she sort of latches onto whomever she runs across; her friendship with the Vault Hunters—and especially Athena—is a fast one, for the most part. Since Janey's a junker and likes to build stuff, she's truly happy to help people. In Tales from the Borderlands, she even helps the main characters build a rocket ship. Janey's not just the type of person to help someone if they just need a favor: She's the one to help the player character find an Oz kit so they can actually breathe up on Elpis, the moon. She even offers to repair a broken Oz kit so the character doesn't die horribly. Along the same vein, Janey's… pretty cheerful about the concept of possibly dying from oxygen deprivation. She's very straightforward and to the point (The second you open this door, all the oxygen is gonna vent and you're gonna suffocate. It'll hurt a lot and your eyes will pop like grapes when the pressure differential gets too harsh.) and is far from afraid from letting that be known. … Except she also, after the player comes out of the door, she says cheerfully, “Don't think about the grapes thing!” Helpful.

She isn't modest about her skills, and she thinks her friends shouldn't be, either. Janey's good at reassuring people: The sidequest involving Torgue has her comforting him when he's upset about the fact that “people like lasers more than explosions.” When Scooter suggests that his work isn't much to look at, Janey reassures him that it is very good. Janey wants people to feel good about themselves. Unless you're an asshole. However, as much faith as Janey has in people, she tends to worry a lot. Her whole problem with Athena's going out and taking jobs is because Athena's throwing herself into danger--and Janey worries to hell and back about her. She's about as much of an optimist as you can get in Borderlands; as Athena says in a line of cut dialogue, she doesn't understand how people can kill thousands to finish a job or get nice loot. Janey's a genuinely good person—if a little... erm, boisterous.

“Heart of gold” is definitely the best way to describe Janey—even if that heart of gold is buried beneath layers of grease. Janey can come off as a little too forward, but she's comfortable with who she is and her sexuality. She hits on Athena several times, even being so bold as to let on that she has a “sexy scar” on her stomach. (EXTREMELY sexy. Athena.) She's blunt about her advances; she sees no reason to hide that she is! She probably has every reason to be so straightforward; she's been alone for a long time, and she's survived on Elpis for a long time. You don't survive on Elpis without being made of really strong stuff, and Janey actually thrives there. She's the reason the player character survives more than ten seconds on the moon. Even when things don't quite go her way, Janey is happy when people are happy; there's a sidequest in which the player can either deliver a thing to Janey or throw it into the lava—at the behest of a certain Mr. Torgue. If the player chooses to throw it into the lava, Janey's a little disappointed… but she's happy that he's happy.
Still, 'least you made the muscly guy happy! I call that a net gain.
With Athena, her heart of gold shines through especially. Janey loves Athena so deeply; which is why when she realizes Athena's been lying to her, it stings. Badly. Janey is upset—but at the same time, when Athena finally comes clean, she forgives her. Janey's capacity for forgiveness (unless you're a kraggon or Deadlift) is pretty impressive! Mostly where Athena's concerned. Throughout Tales, Janey is very persistent in emphasizing that Athena is past her bounty hunting days; she sounds vaguely threatening whenever Athena suggests going back to her old, dangerous life. More than anything, Janey does trust Athena. She believes in her more than anyone else.

As a junker, Janey is super creative and super smart. She builds stuff for a living, after all, and that stuff is built from practically nothing. Spare parts aren't much to look at, but once Janey's on the job, she can create some pretty amazing stuff. She even manages to cobble together a rocket ship that actually works fairly well (fairly—there are a few hitches but, hey, Janey isn't perfect) and does the job. Janey's true creativity shines through if the player chooses her in the final showdown against the Traveler in Tales—when she controls Gortys, a huge robot, she manages to get Gortys to fire actual jets. And she kicks the Traveler in the face. No mercy from this junker.

Which brings us to a less-than-cheerful Janey Springs: She can be incredibly vengeful. Like, scarily vengeful. Mess with her or anyone she cares about, and you're in for it. For example, Janey's girlfriend, Steph, was killed by kraggons. Janey very much wants to see them dead—she even talks about making “corpse jewelry” out of them. Her title card in Tales even reads “Slayer of kraggons,” so she has a serious vendetta against them. It's probably a little excessive, but Janey is still hurting deeply over the loss of Steph, even after so long. Janey represses the hell out of her negative feelings. There are times when she lets the hurt shine through, such as when she's talking about the kraggons killing “her”… that is, Steph. So Janey wants to see every last one of the buggers dead, because they stole from her someone so important. Janey is also the type to want to see assholes dead. She contracts the Vault Hunter to kill a guy named Deadlift, partly because he didn't take well to her not being into guys, but mostly because “he's an asshole.” Literally. She emphasizes this constantly throughout the sidequest, and she's absolutely right: Guy's an asshole.

Janey, also, can dwell very deeply on her sadness. There's an obvious heaviness to her voice when she speaks about her dead girlfriend; she almost sounds like she's going to cry. Of course, she deals with this in a slightly… unconventional way: She writes a children's book about it.
This one is called, "Baby Kraggon Goes On An Adventure". Baby Kraggon crawled out of the crack with his mum, Flamey. They saw strange two-legged creatures and thought, "They must be food!" So Baby Kraggon and his mum raided the camp. Flamey tore a two-legger up pretty bad, and Baby Kraggon killed another one. Then Baby Kraggon ran away like a little b***h, stupid piece of s**t.
This is an actual thing Janey writes. She channels her anger through actual children's books—and she's very insistent on not censoring her work. Janey states outright that that book, in particular, was not published because she refused to change the part about people and baby kraggons dying. But, going back to Janey's sadness... she's distraught when she finds out Athena is lying to her. She can't understand why her girlfriend would lie; and more than that, Janey is unsure of herself with Athena. She worries that Athena doesn't actually like her However, when she's told that Athena said she loves her before being taken... well, Janey perks right up--and she becomes determined to rescue her girl and marry her.
