Character Name: Uraraka Ochako Series: My Hero Academia Timeline: Ch. 246 (during her work study with Tsuyu and Ryukyu over winter break) Canon Resource Links:Here is a wiki for her!!
Personality: If there’s one word that could be used to describe Uraraka Ochako, it would easily be kind. She has a very inviting, friendly air about her and is often seen smiling or laughing with her friends. In fact, it’s stated in canon that Ochako loves to see people around her happy and smiling, and strives to be the sort of person who can lift their spirits enough to be to that point. She cares deeply for people, especially those with whom she has formed a strong bond with - namely the entirety of class 1-A as well as a majority of the U.A. teachers, and of course her immediate family. She would do just about anything if it meant either helping them or making them happy, and she would do it without batting an eye. In this way, Ochako is also a deeply generous, giving individual.
Stemming from that generosity, her main goal for even wanting to become a professional hero is because her mother and father, who own a dying construction company, are going through a financial hardship where they barely make ends meat to support themselves and their quickly growing daughter’s needs. Because her love for her parents is so immense (she would do anything and everything for them), it led her to pursue becoming a hero so that she could get decent, government pay and save up enough money for her parents to live a happy, comfortable life without worrying about their finances. Most of the time, if jobs include pay of some kind, she will usually take them readily, because it means she’ll have funds to put aside for her parents’ benefit. It’s also made her quite good at managing her own finances and balancing her funds as well as bargaining. She’ll usually try to get foodstuffs and items that are on sale, discount, or a day past their expiry date so as to get them at a reduced price so as not to dip too far into her stores of money.
However, after the events of the Overhaul arc, Ochako’s goal as a hero hasn’t necessarily changed, per se, but has evolved more toward the lines of wanting to save people. Big words, which can mean a multitude of different things. Ochako is the very definition of someone who wants to be the light at the end of the tunnel for another person. She wants to be their rainbow after a heavy storm, their oasis in the desert, a warm fire in a snowstorm… In essence, someone’s salvation. And she puts her everything into it, determined and fierce in her pursuits because nothing has ever been about herself - she does so much for others because it’s so important. They are so important.
Even so, Ochako is not simply round, soft, and sweet. She has a fire in her heart that burns white hot, and she can be a fierce warrior when up against a challenging foe. In the fight against Bakugou at the sports festival, she displayed a lot of fierce determination when going up against him. She knew how outclassed she was against her classmate, and yet she went in, guns blazing, without any help from anyone (despite Izuku’s offer of a plan to help her succeed). In the end, she did lose to him, rather spectacularly, but it was also a pivotal point in her growth as well, making people see her as not simply someone that needed to be protected, or coddled, but someone who was giving her all against a person who was leagues above her in terms of raw ability.
And never once did she give in. Not until her legs gave out did she surrender, or lose that ferocity. Ochako is a force to be reckoned with, when she gets serious, and only her inexperience and Bakugou’s battle prowess at that time were what led to her defeat. There was a gap between them that she could not cross, but Ochako took that leap regardless, undaunted and unafraid.
Even so, the loss did hit her a bit hard in terms of her self worth. Because of just how, to put it frankly, obliterated she was during the fight (she didn’t manage to get a single hit in on her classmate), as well as people expecting, hell demanding, Bakugo go easy on her because she was seen as “frail” struck a chord that she hasn’t been able to shake. It’s not easy to accept loss, but it’s harder to accept that people think less of you on sight. She’s never voiced these concerns to anyone, let alone her parents, and she’s got no one to blame but herself. She even retains a shaky, but easy camaraderie with Bakugo despite how he kicked her behind, and she actually respects and admires him for being the only one to take her efforts seriously, and hold nothing back. He didn’t see her as weak, or frail, but an equal worthy of experiencing him at his finest. It’s perhap that very respect and admiration that lets her forgive so easily, and get along with him fairly well in later months.
It’s also, perhaps, how she saw just how wide a gap there was between herself and her ultimate goals and, instead of being shunted by that deep ravine, began building the bridge to cross it. She is either intensely determined or stubborn as a mule, or maybe a mix of both, but if she has a goal, a mission of any sort, she’ll do her damndest to complete it. And while she has no intention of becoming the “best of the best” like others within her canon, she does have a competitive streak that sometimes ignites that fire in her heart once more.
Wrapping up, another note on Ochako’s personality is that she’s very emotionally perceptive of others, after getting to know them for a while. She can easily read a person, especially people like her close friends and classmates, and while not a mindreader in any regard, she can get a sense of how someone’s feeling to try and deescalate a situation or even help when someone is feeling blue. Of course, this perceptiveness backfires on her, because Ochako can also be a bit blunt - to the point of mindlessly being quite rude - so it’s not always a boon and can very much be a curse if she opens her mouth at the wrong time or to the wrong person. But, she does try to maintain a cool, level-headed, warm, and friendly atmosphere toward people, even strangers.
She wants to be a good hero, and that means being many things - dependable, strong, fierce, determined, fearless, giving, but also kind. Above anything else, she wants people to reach back for her hand when she reaches out to them, regardless of who they may be (friends, family, allies, and even other heroes), and feel at peace...because she’s there to save them.
