Character Name:Veralidaine (Daine) Sarrasri Series:The Immortals (book series by Tamora Pierce) Timeline:Near the end of the second book, when she breaks the two opals holding the valley shielding spell together, and passes out from the shockwave. Daine is 14 years old. Canon Resource Links: Tamora Pierce Wikia page The Immortals wiki page
Personality: Daine does not give her loyalty and trust away lightly after being hunted by her village like an animal. Therefore, when she finally does trust someone, she's fiercely loyal to them. She has strong loyalty towards Onua and Numair, who both gave her a chance and didn't judge her when she finally had the courage to tell them about her past. Because of this, she never betrays their trust and has complete faith that they will always have her back, particularly her teacher Numair.
Daine is also extremely independent having both lived on a farm and also living off the land for many months following the death of her mother and grandfather. She is a skilled hunter and tracker, and an amazing marksman with both bow and slingshot at long range. She is used to camping out, building fires, hunting and cooking meat and foraging for edible plants. Her mother was a healer and taught her to make healing poultices and medicinal brews. Daine isn't afraid of being on her own, feeling that she's never really alone with animals around, and prefers to be outdoors than inside.
Daine is not afraid to tell it like it is, and often doesn't think before she speaks. She's a very practical thinker, and can get frustrated when left out of the loop. If she's comfortable with the person, or if she is addressing people she dislikes, she'll often talk back and give cheek.
She's curious and not afraid to satisfy her curiosity even if that means putting herself into dangerous situations. She'll sometimes disobey orders if she thinks the outcome will outweigh the consequences.
Daine is afraid of her wild magic and the possibility of falling back into the 'madness', when she ran wild with the wolf pack, her magic blurring the line between human and animal. Even though Numair created a magical block to prevent this from happening, in the back of her mind she still fears it could happen again. However Daine shows almost no fear in the face of immortals, and has no qualms or hesitation in giving lip to the more dangerous ones or killing them outright.
She's fascinated by all animals, particularly if she comes across one she's never seen before. Until she travelled to Pirates Swoop, she had never seen the ocean before, and immediately wanted to wade in and communicate with the animals. When she becomes enamoured with an animal she often forgets her surroundings, which can result in accidentally being hurt or almost killing herself. She loves animal anatomy books, which she studies closely to help her heal animals using her wild magic. Daine prefers animals to people - she finds them much easier to understand. She doesn't like dealing with human politics and wars, and often wishes people were more like animals. She hates putting animals in danger or asking them to fight on her behalf, fearing they'll be badly injured or die.
Finally, she's a fast learner. When teaching her to pull her magic in and control it, Numair tells her that she does it faster than anyone he's ever met. She can also rapidly adapt to different situations thrown at her with relative ease.
Special abilities: Daine has the ability to talk to and understand animals.
Ability Restrictions for Victory Road: She has to talk to pokemon using her voice, not her mind (so basically reverting back to how she was at the start of the novels). Also, unless a pokemon has known her a while (or is psychic), what she’l l get from them is images which she has to decipher (again, reverting back to her abilities at the start of the series). The longer she’s known a pokemon, the more the pokemon will actually start to talk mentally back using language instead of images. [Please let me know if there are any issues with this – I found the section that said if a character can understand animals, they can keep this ability, which is why I’m including it here.]

Victory Road Sample: Daine had no idea what in Goddess' name had happened after she smashed that second opal. She huffed. It would be nice of Numair to warn her if stuff like that was going to happen. How was she to know it would blow up like that? The Gift was his forte after all, not hers.
The worst part was Daine felt deaf and blind. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t tap into her wild magic, nor see the copper threads around her that she usually saw. She couldn’t hear the animals close by, and that worried her. Had destroying the dome temporarily disrupted her magic?
She gnawed on a nail as she looked around at her surroundings. Maybe smashing the opals had triggered another spell, transporting her to wherever this was?
She sighed, dropping the pack she'd been handed before being thrown out the door of a stranger’s house and rifling through it. It was also concerning that Kit wasn't here with her, even though she knew the baby dragon could take care of herself.
She pulled out a red ball, frowning as she turned it over in her hand. What on earth was this? A button clicked, and Daine scrambled back in fright as a bright light radiated out from the opened ball, solidifying into pony with a flaming tail and mane.
“Oh Goddess…you’re beautiful!” she exclaimed, rising to her feet and gently caressing the pony’s neck, blowing into its nose so it could identify her scent. “What are you?”
A series of images came to her from the pony. “A Ponyta? I’ve never heard of one of those before, let alone a pony with flames for a tail and mane. Can I touch it, will it burn me?”
The Ponyta shook its head, leaning towards her. She tentatively stroked the edge of the flame with a finger, startled that it felt warm and alive, but didn’t burn. The Ponyta sent her another image. “Oh, only when you want it to or you feel threatened. That’s a clever trick.”
The Ponyta snorted, and then bent down to sniff the pokeball before stomping on it in disgust. The ball broke under the Ponyta’s hooves. Daine made a face. “I assume whatever that was, you didn’t like being in it. I don’t blame you. I hate cages too.” She shuddered.
