Personality: Pearl is one of many, a type of gem created to serve those of a higher rank. This one in particular was made for Pink Diamond, who later became Rose Quartz. Her loyalty was unwavering by design, even after Rose basically gave her her freedom. She was so certain of her position as Rose's right-hand gem that she wouldn't believe the diamond would keep secrets from her - especially since she kept the most important secret of all: Rose's true identity.
Throughout the series, Pearl goes through a large amount of character development. At the beginning she still has the mindset that she's just a Pearl, and thereby not as capable as others at doing things on her own. She goes as far as to dupe everyone into believing Peridot is causing trouble when she isn't, just so Garnet will fuse with her. She's very capable on her own, however, as she proves numerous times. For a long while she harbored a lot of resentment toward Steven's father, Greg, as he was the first human that was a real threat toward her relationship with Rose. Eventually, with some help from Steven, she was able to move beyond that. She's her own gem, and her ability to evolve past her original "programming" is part of what makes her stand out from others of her type.
There will always be some heartaches that never truly go away, of course. Though she's courted the idea of having a relationship with a human herself, she's never followed through with it. (There are several phone numbers given to her from interested individuals stored in her gem.) It seems like she's still not quite ready for that yet. It took a game of Steven Tag to finally get her to shapeshift again after the traumatizing event that was "shattering" Pink Diamond in the form of Rose Quartz. When she confronts Pink's former pearl and is asked how she ever stopped hurting she states quite plainly that she didn't.
Pearl is a very organized individual - and something of a perfectionist. She takes pride in keeping all of her things sorted and is responsible for keeping the house tidy as well. She rarely eats, but she'll gladly do the dishes for everyone else. Even the items stored in her gem are kept in alphabetical order.
She can be very serious and motherly at times, but is also capable of being very overdramatic and panicky. She's been highly protective of Steven (to the point where she enjoyed watching him sleep) though she's learning to give him his space and trust in his abilities as he grows older.

She's still not even sure why she needs to have any, aside from battling them in what seems like very unnecessary fighting matches, but it's part of the culture and one must always appreciate another world's culture.
