Once, the statue must have been a bright white, but years and years of being under the surface means the stone is now weathered and covered in barnacles and debris.

The statue itself is that of a young woman, one hand held close to her chest, the other extended upwards. Is she reaching for the surface? A loved one? Who can tell. What you can tell is that her expression (though you might need to clear some debris of his face first) is one of sorrow.
