For the sake of fishing, does a rod have to be a legitimate actual rod (and how would one typically acquire such)? Or would just a long-ass piece of string and a coathanger hook be viable?

Also, is there more likely to be better catching with a terrible rod if you head into the water itself, such as riding on a Pokemon or a log?
