Heads up, this app contains considerable spoilers for part 5 of JJBA!
Character
Name: Bruno Bucciarati
Series: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Timeline: post-death (chapter 144)
Canon Resource Links: Sweet jesus JoJo is So Much, I am so sorry
Personality: Bruno Bucciarati is a man who's been dying a slow death since the age of twelve--not literally, of course, but it's only from early in the part that he begins to feel alive again, thanks to meeting Giorno.
See, Bucciarati's been a part of the Passione mafia family since the tender age of twelve, which can lead one to make... particular assumptions about him. While he comes off as affable when he first meets a stranger (he makes idle chit-chat with Giorno upon first meeting him, doing the same with two airport security guards later), Bucciarati is a serious and ruthless man. You don't really see him entertaining the antics of the younger members of his group, whereas even grouchy Abbacchio might humor them from time to time. His smiles are few and far between. He takes his duties incredibly seriously, going above and beyond in his duty of protecting Trish. He's often quite pragmatic, especially in fights, and he will do whatever it takes to win--whether that's ambushes and sneak attacks, or riskier maneuvers when his subordinates' lives are on the line. Seriously, though, look no further than his fight against Pesci when it comes to drastic measures--if it weren't for a pinch of luck, his role in the story very well could've ended there!
(Also, like, just, in general? He's kind of an oddball. You're not part of the mafia from the age of twelve and grow up perfectly socialized.)
Despite the ruthlessness, however, Bucciarati at his core is a kind and compassionate man, who cares greatly about his community, his subordinates, and those otherwise close to him. It's made clear early on that he's well-liked by the people in Naples that know him and he's on very good terms with them; he'll often accept their requests for help. This kindness was present even when he was young, when his parents divorced when he was seven. He knew his mother would be fine living in the city on her own, so he opted to stay with his father, who would almost certainly be lonely by himself. His kindness and compassion extends to even things like paying for an eye surgery for Narancia (and only getting upset when the boy expressed a desire to join Passione), or taking in those with legitimately nowhere else to turn--seriously, look at the rest of his team, look at how many of them have gotten screwed over by society, by family, or otherwise by people they should've been able to trust. And because Bucciarati has taken them in, given them a place to belong, and treated them with care, they are (mostly) utterly loyal to him in return.
There are certain values that Bucciarati holds especially close to his heart--selflessness in pursuit of a just cause, protecting the innocent and helpless, strong resolve, and perhaps most significantly, the bonds and loyalty between family. The last one is especially significant, considering how it drives the back half of the plot. Bucciarati himself first committed murder at the age of twelve (shortly before his joining Passione) in order to protect his father. The idea that Diavolo wanted Trish brought to him, not to meet and protect her, but in order to murder her as part of his quest to wipe out anything that could be traced to him or his past? This absolutely enrages Bucciarati, who flips the heck out and says "screw it" to any slower path to overthrowing the boss, attempting to kill Diavolo right then and there.
Needless to say, this bites him in the ass. (But he does rescue Trish? So there's that.)
Also worth noting is Bucciarati's willpower and determination. It's worth mentioning again that he joined Passione at an alarmingly young age, and it's easy to assume that by now anything resembling the ideals and values he may have had would have been stomped out of him, or left by the wayside. And yet... it hasn't. He still cares about doing the right thing where he can, he still believes in things like honor and justice and loyalty. It would be so easy for him to succumb to cynicism, but he hasn't. Bruno Bucciarati has clung to his moral compass with both hands and feet despite his circumstances. He has no illusions about what kind of life this is (which is almost certainly why he tried to discourage Narancia), but still he persists with his values. But more than that... Bucciarati knows for a fact exactly how far willpower can take you, when you need it to. He spends a considerable part of the plot honest to god hanging onto his life by way of sheer willpower. No matter what happens, Bucciarati keeps going, regardless of what happens to him, until he legitimately cannot continue any longer--when his body is literally falling apart on him.
It's also worth reiterating that he takes his responsibilities as leader incredibly seriously. He sees any job given to his team to the end. He looks out for his subordinates, being stern but fair. This would be why he's all the fiercer when it's their lives on the line. If there's something he can do about their survival, he will--it's part of his duty. Sadly, being the leader also means having to make the tough calls, the ones that can make him seem cold or heartless to others, like having to leave Abbacchio's body behind when there's a very real chance that the entire team's in danger. It's clearly a decision he doesn't like making, and he tries very hard to keep it together in front of the others. Such are the chains of commanding, unfortunately.

Victory Road Sample: As soon as Bucciarati's picked up his Slowpoke and moved out of the middle of the road, he supposes he ought to at least take a look around New Bark Town before he sets out.
It's not long before he's flagged down, though. There's an elderly woman sitting on her stoop, with what looks like pink-and-cream-colored kittens, who's waving him over. A conversation over tea later, he finds himself with one of these kittens--a Skitty, it's called--with a promise to stop by again and tell the woman all about the Skitty's adventures on the road. He didn't get the pleasure of naming the little cutie, but that's okay.
"Buttons" is a cute name anyway, he thinks.
So with Teodoro the Slowpoke in his ball, and Buttons herself in Bucciarati's arms, he's back to wandering New Bark Town.
"This will be your first time seeing all of this for yourself too, won't it?" He strokes the Skitty's head, getting an enthusiastic 'myaa!' in return. He can't help the tiny smile that briefly crosses his face. "The three of us should have no problem getting to the next town... though, I'm not sure how long that'll take." It's to nobody in particular as he walks along. "Maybe a break soon wouldn't be remiss... we can take that time to plan our first leg of the trip."
He's basically talking to himself, yes, but he doesn't really... have anyone else to talk to. It's kind of lonely, he's finding, and he's not particularly sure he likes it. Though... it's not a priority at the moment, thinking on it. He has a trip to prepare for, first things first. Having taken stock of everything he'd been provided in his bag, he is not nearly as prepared as he'd prefer to be. Clothes, whatever, though he'd rather have more undergarments than what he was provided. Food, though... Food's something he's going to have to get more of before he sets out.
... Bucciarati's pulled away from his train of thought, however, by the sound of his stomach growling. It's an odd sensation after having gone so long without it happening. Ah... well. Trip planning can wait a little while, he thinks. At least until he's not doing his planning on an empty stomach--not to mention, he should probably see to Teodoro and Buttons being fed as well.
