Personality:
If you were to ask Loki, he would almost always say he’s the smartest and most capable person in the room. There may be times where he’s right! He is actually rather intelligent, having benefited from a sharp mind and literal centuries of royal tutoring. He is also very strong. As a Jotun, he has physical capabilities that far outstretch a normal human. This combined with his his mastery of magic means there are very few in the universe who can stand toe to toe with him. Unfortunately for him, he is a villian/narrative foil in a superhero property, so he is often in the company of people who are stronger and/or smarter than him. Most all of his defeats stem from his hubris.
Take this scene from the first Avengers as an example. Hawkeye shoots an arrow at Loki. Loki, because of his enhanced strength and reflexes, is able to catch it. He makes a dumb smirk at the archer, the arrow blows up in his face. The smart thing to do would have been to catch the arrow and throw it away. Hawkeye had previously been under Loki control, so Loki should have known that the man had trick arrows like that. Either Loki didn’t think to ask about his arsenal (because he’s a lowly human and it wasn’t his concern) or he just straight up didn’t think about it in the moment, because in his mind there wasn’t anything to worry about! This human wouldn’t be smart enough to shoot an exploding arrow at me!
Another thing getting in the way of his schemes that are so well thought out (sarcasm), is his general chaotic nature. He likes it when things are loud and flashy and out of control. He especially likes it if he’s the one who causes said ruckus. In Thor: Ragnarok, Thor agrees with Loki when he says he would be better off staying on Sakaar, noting it is “Savage, chaotic, lawless.” Thor says Loki would do great there, and for good reason. Loki had been on the planet for two weeks before Thor showed up and was apparently thriving. Loki does take slight offense (probably at the ‘savage’ part), but doesn’t disagree with him either.
Speaking of that scene in the elevator, let’s take a closer look at the end of that— no, not the Get Help part, though that is hilarious. Right before that, as the brothers are talking about Loki staying on Sakaar, how they should go their separate ways. Loki seems somewhat disappointed, like he wanted Thor to try to get him to stay. It’s no secret Loki’s relationship with his family is a complicated and fraught one. Even before he found out he’s actually a Jotun, the mortal enemies of Asgard and “monster(s)who parents tell their children about at night,” he clear states he always thought Odin favored Thor over him*. Tme and time again he tries to prove himself to his family, Odin most of all. In this scene, in his own weird way, he seems to want Thor to ask him to stay. Loki pushed to feel the pull, but when Thor doesn’t give him what he wanted, he’s at a loss. In the end Loki has a deep-seeded need to belong, to feel wanted and a part of something. Outside of his chaotic nature, that’s why he thrived in Sakaar: it was a place where he could start over, weave his own story, and belong.**
Years of writing education tells me I need a conclusion paragraph so…yeah, he’s my poor little meow meow (aka: war criminal) and I want to give him cute battle monsters and let him find a gang of misfits to pal around with.
*Whether this is true or not is hard to say as we’re not shown more than a brief scene of them growing up. But then again we aren’t here to debate Odin’s A+Parenting. What matters to Loki’s character is that he thinks Odin favored Thor, coloring his opinion of both his brother and father.
**Thus why the best trope for Loki is Found Family and why I enjoy playing him in jamjar settings.
