Otherworlder Battle Tournament

Welcome to the Otherworlder Battle Tournament

This is where you'll be submitting your strategies for the Otherworlder Battle Tournament. Please only submit strategies here. If you have any questions, direct them to our Tournament FAQ.

A small reminder of the rules

  • You will start the battle with the pokemon you put in first place on your submission form.
  • You may only use one held item. If the item is consumable, you may replace it with the same item between matches.
  • There will be no item usage during these battles -- any healing done must come from the pokemon themselves.
  • You may only use moves from the pool you submitted earlier. Deviations from this may lead to a disqualification.
  • Mega-stones are not permitted during this tournament. Your pokemon may also not evolve.
  • If you do not submit your strategy before the deadline, your character will lose.

Initially, all comments on this post will be screened. Once a round has been completed, we will unscreen the strategy comments. Because the matches are not all happening at the same time, it is certainly possible for your character to watch other fights as they go down. As such, in later rounds, you are allowed to use information learned from earlier rounds i.e. if it is apparent in Round 1, that someone's pokemon has a certain ability, you may use that to build your strategy in a later round.

Leading with Porygon2 means Download could go either way, but considering Tsareena's type and moveset, he's wasting no time before using Substitute. Once the Substitute is up, it's either Recover or Conversion2 if Tsareena uses a Fighting move. At that point, Dirk's plan is to reverse the speed order of the battle with Trick Room, then use Teleport to swap in a different Pokemon--preferably Yolkai the Exeggutor. Between Flamethrower and Swords Dance to boost Dragon Hammer, Yolkai can dish it out while taking minimal damage from Tsareena's largely Grass typed moves. Or at least, that's Dirk's hope. Worst case scenario, Yolkai can re-up Trick Room and go out with an Explosion, finishing Tsareena off. Get outta here with that Grass typing, he does not want that anywhere near his idiot fish.

If G'rhyf chooses Jaya the Corviknight, Dirk will have PGP or Yolkai maintain Trick Room, then Teleport and swap in Heraclitus the Arctovish for Super Fang to halve Jaya's health immediately, and follow with Whirlpool to trap Jaya in the fight, followed by some fast and brutal Fishious Rends. (Remember, Heraclitus is slower... so now it's faster. If Fishious Rend hits before its target moves, that's double damage.) If he finds Jaya's attacks too annoying, he may have Heraclitus switch to Icicle Crash instead, in the hopes of causing Flinching. Again, he's really leaning on that speed advantage from Trick Room. If forced to use PGP against Jaya, Dirk will have PGP lead with Mirror Coat in case of a move like Swagger or Metal Sound, and then use Conversion2 to get some extra resistance before defaulting to the old Lock-On and Zap Cannon combo, with Recover or Trick Room to maintain a speed advantage if needed. Porygon2 with an Eviolite is supremely durable, and without any Type advantages on Jaya's part, Dirk is supremely unafraid of losing PGP here.

If G'rhyf chooses Dhaval the Gardevoir, PGP will refresh Trick Room and swap immediately to Heraclitus for Super Fang. Dirk will prefer Fishious Rend over Iron Head for the STAB and raw damage of a Fishious Rend that goes first, but Iron Head can cause Flinch, so he'll stick with whichever proves more effective. Heraclitus is here for fast KOs, not longevity. If Heraclitus faints, PGP will come back to refresh Trick Room and add a Substitute before attempting Toxic. This will be a more defensive battle, as PGP starts mixing Recover and Shadow Ball. If G'rhyf starts using more status moves, Dirk will deter them by having PGP use Magic Coat, but he really, really does not want to have to use Yolkai against Gardevoir and is more than willing to waste time on Substitutes and Recover while Toxic ticks down. If Yolkai is still up and Dhaval uses Wish, though, he will have PGP Teleport out and use Yolkai's Explosion to try and take Gardevoir out before the darn thing can heal itself back up. 'Absolutely the fuck not.'

Dipika is opening up against PGP with Teeter Dance, with the intention to follow up with a High Jump Kick...but the discovery of what Trick Room does is going to make things very desperate very fast. With no good options to U-Turn into, they order her to Bounce and hopefully eat up Trick Room turns (or fish for confusion self-hits, they're not picky) until she is knocked out. If they somehow manage to outlast the five turns with her still up, it'll be another High Jump Kick to hopefully knock PGP out before it can get Trick Room back up.

Jaya is out next, and if PGP is still up she will Brave Bird for an attempted knock-out. If Heraclitus is out, then she will use Swagger (confusion strats baybeeeeee) into a whole lot of Steel Wing, at which point this becomes a race between Trick Room speed and super-effective moves. If Jaya does manage to SOMEHOW get past Heraclitus, Yolkai will get an attempt at a Brave Bird to the face...but the likelihood of Trick Room not being up at the time is low.

And now, Dhaval. The surprise ace in the hole, he opens with either an Aura Sphere on Heraclitus or a prayer of a Hypnosis on Yolkai. If that goes through on Yolkai, Moonblast. If not, or Yolkai comes out after Heraclitus, Recover spam to hopefully keep ahead of the damage until Trick Room falls off, THEN Moonblast. Either way, they have no time to try and set up with status moves--their best bet is the Pokemon equivalent of guerrilla warfare.

If they somehow win this, it's going to be by the skin of their teeth and the grace of RNG.
