Otherworlder Battle Tournament

Welcome to the Otherworlder Battle Tournament

This is where you'll be submitting your strategies for the Otherworlder Battle Tournament. Please only submit strategies here. If you have any questions, direct them to our Tournament FAQ.

A small reminder of the rules

  • You will start the battle with the pokemon you put in first place on your submission form.
  • You may only use one held item. If the item is consumable, you may replace it with the same item between matches.
  • There will be no item usage during these battles -- any healing done must come from the pokemon themselves.
  • You may only use moves from the pool you submitted earlier. Deviations from this may lead to a disqualification.
  • Mega-stones are not permitted during this tournament. Your pokemon may also not evolve.
  • If you do not submit your strategy before the deadline, your character will lose.

Initially, all comments on this post will be screened. Once a round has been completed, we will unscreen the strategy comments. Because the matches are not all happening at the same time, it is certainly possible for your character to watch other fights as they go down. As such, in later rounds, you are allowed to use information learned from earlier rounds i.e. if it is apparent in Round 1, that someone's pokemon has a certain ability, you may use that to build your strategy in a later round.

Since he's starting with Mamoswine, and Vinegar is leading with an Electric-Type, Jean is going to lead with Stealth Rock, as there's not a whole lot a Morpeko can do to a Ground-Type. Free hazards. That's especially bad for Cinderace, who takes 25% on switch in.

If Morepeko stays in, he'll shoot for the kill with Earthquake. If it does not, Jean with immediately switch to Gyarados.

The Gyarados has Intimidate, which will give him a pretty big advantage over both Cinderace and Heracross (Attack focused Pokemon) along with it's type advantage. If Vinegar stays in with either of them, he will go for the attack with Gyarados (Waterfall for both in case Morpeko comes back out, if Morpeko is fainted, then Hurricane on Heracross)

If Morpeko comes back in, Jean will switch to Mamoswine if he's still alive, or Hydreigon if he's not. Gyarados ain't gonna fuck with Morpeko. Mamoswine will not stay out against the Fighting-Types unless they're within range of an Ice Shard KO.

If Cinderace comes out, first choice for switch is Gyarados, and then Hydreigon. Cinderace has a handful of Fighting Type moves, but none of them are hard hitters, and Cinderace does not have STAB, so Jean is confident Hydreigon can take a couple of hits from Fighting-Type moves on Cinderace. 90 base Defense is relatively bulky.

He'll avoid having Hydreigon out when Heracross is out front at the same time, and will always switch back to Gyarados as long as he's confident Gyarados can tank a hit (which he should be able to, taking into account Intimidate, Gyarados' decent bulk and all around defensive type advantage in this fight).

Hydregion will use Flamethrower against Heracross (if cornered), Surf against Cinderace and Outrage against Morpeko. Any super effective attacks are boosted by her Expert Belt.

Switching around too much will hurt Vinegar's chances, since Stealth Rocks are up, so Jean won't mind a constant switching game. Once Jean knows he's within KO range of any of the three, he'll go for it.

Overall, Jean will be playing the safe game. He's not going to squander his first turn advantage and his hazards, and his huge defensive advantage with Gyarados backed up with a Ground Type to switch in to Electric Type moves. He's going to be calculating KO ranges very seriously, for both his own Pokemon and Vinegar's, and will try to get a feel for when Vinegar would switch or stay in to try and get the best predict. He won't be going for Hail Mary unless he's absolutely certain he has a guaranteed KO.

Doppio begins by switching out to Scarabella, because wow, Morpeko vs. Mamoswine is a bad matchup.

If Jean doesn't also switch, which would be Ideal, then he'll start with a Swords Dance, followed up by a Close Combat, in hopes of knocking out the Mamoswine in one hit. If it doesn't work, maybe one last Brick Break will do the trick? Though if the defense drop winds up getting Scarabella KO'd... he'll have to make a risky switch to Connie to finish off the Mamoswine with a Flame Charge.

If Jean switches to Gyarados next, Cristina is up with a first-turn Aura Wheel hoping to capitalize on that 4x weakness. If that isn't enough to KO it in one turn, then he'll follow up with an Agility and, then, one more Electric-type Aura Wheel to wrap it up.

If Hydreigon follows... Well, if it follows Gyarados, and Cristina is still in? He'll try to get a Power Trip off for a little damage from her one-to-three stat boosts. Ultimately, though, it's Connie and her Scope Lens that he intends on pitting against Hydreigon. The idea is to throw a barrage of Double Kicks at it and hope at least a few of them crit. If Connie is knocked out... Well, if Doppio has any Pokémon left, he's kind of hoping to finish whittling down Hydreigon - say, with Scarabella's Brick Break, or even Cristina's Thrash if she still has any life left in her. If not? Uh, welp, that's it. GG.
