Otherworlder Battle Tournament

Welcome to the Otherworlder Battle Tournament

This is where you'll be submitting your strategies for the Otherworlder Battle Tournament. Please only submit strategies here. If you have any questions, direct them to our Tournament FAQ.

A small reminder of the rules

  • You will start the battle with the pokemon you put in first place on your submission form.
  • You may only use one held item. If the item is consumable, you may replace it with the same item between matches.
  • There will be no item usage during these battles -- any healing done must come from the pokemon themselves.
  • You may only use moves from the pool you submitted earlier. Deviations from this may lead to a disqualification.
  • Mega-stones are not permitted during this tournament. Your pokemon may also not evolve.
  • If you do not submit your strategy before the deadline, your character will lose.

Initially, all comments on this post will be screened. Once a round has been completed, we will unscreen the strategy comments. Because the matches are not all happening at the same time, it is certainly possible for your character to watch other fights as they go down. As such, in later rounds, you are allowed to use information learned from earlier rounds i.e. if it is apparent in Round 1, that someone's pokemon has a certain ability, you may use that to build your strategy in a later round.
demonpuppy: about the tongue eating spiders, on account of the spiders eating your tongue while you were sleeping, probably should have warned you about that (you can't say i didn't warn you)

With Espie out first against Rosie, Chip will start with their favored strategy (aka only strategy) of Thunder Wave and Electro Ball, possibly throwing in Double Team and Agility where they can. This is...literally their entire idea, though if their opponent keeps shaking off paralysis they'll switch to just using their heaviest hitting moves (Thunder, Brick Break). Probably not getting past Rosie.

Once Espie goes down it's Lazzo's turn out, and their strategy here is the Toxic and Venoshock combo. For Firion Chip does know enough to at least switch to Toxic and Flamethrower instead, but again it's. A very singular strategy. Honestly a coin flip if they remember to use Double Team here.

And finally, Rocky! Hopefully Rosie is down by now, but with Superpower and Earthquake Firion has a fight on its hands. Then it's Seifer, and...Dragon Rush. Just Dragon Rush.

At least they tried?

In this battle, Cecil’s Shell Bell is held by Seifer the Gyarados.

Against Espie the Pikachu...

Rosie will start with Minimize in hopes of avoiding a few attacks. She’ll then continue with Power-Up Punch despite the risk of contact Paralysis, as its low power is offset by its guaranteed Attack raise, which will be helpful when she switches to using Dig. If she ever falls below half her HP, she’ll use Life Dew the first time it happens. Cecil will only switch her out if he’s forced to (in which case he’ll favor Firion) or if Chip switches Pokémon first (in which case he’ll favor Seifer).

Firion would start off with Swords Dance, follow up with Screech if he’s not too damaged, then move on to Earthquake. Should one of his attacks be almost but not quite enough to knock Espie out, he’d use Quick Attack on his next turn to attempt to finish the battle as quickly as possible.

Seifer would, if possible in any way, use Roar or switch out to avoid that match-up. Should they happen to be the last two Pokémon in the match, he’d use Earthquake exclusively in an attempt to win before he gets the shock of his life.

Against Lazzo the Salandit...

Rosie would switch out for Seifer if that is an option, unless Chip switches to Lazzo before Espie is defeated, in which case she may try to bait a single Poison-type attack by using Lucky Chant, in hopes of acquiring the Poison status condition, which would not harm her due to Magic Guard and protect her from later paralyzing attempts. This would not apply if she’d previously been paralyzed. Should Seifer and Firion have already fainted, she would use Minimize once more, followed by Dig to exploit that quadruple weakness to Ground.

Firion would switch out for Seifer if that is an option, as his immunity to Poison is balanced out by a weakness to Fire. Should Seifer have already fainted, he would start with Swords Dance and follow up with Earthquake to exploit that quadruple weakness to Ground.

Seifer would start off with Dragon Dance. After that, if he’s not poisoned, he would move on to Rain Dance. After Rain Dance, or immediately after Dragon Dance if poisoned, he’d alternate between Earthquake and Waterfall, to exploit the quadruple weakness to Ground and the boost to Water if applicable. This is the match-up Cecil favors if possible.

Against Rocky the Flygon...

As Cecil also trains a Flygon, he has existing knowledge of the species’ level-up move list and of its Levitate ability.

Rosie would use Minimize once more, then move on to an Ice Beam, as she has no way to make Blizzard more accurate. After that, she’d attempt Moonblast once, see that STAB has less of an effect than a quadruple weakness, and go back to Ice Beam. As Magic Guard protects her from indirect damage, she’d take no special measures to counter Sandstorm.

Firion would start with Swords Dance, followed by Ice Punch. Should he fall below half HP or so, he’d heal himself with Life Dew, unless there’s a decent chance his next attack would end the round. As his Steel typing protects him against Sandstorm damage, he’d not take any special measures against it.

Seifer would start with Dragon Dance, then follow by alternating between Ice Fang and Avalanche. Should there be any attempt to set up Sandstorm, Rain Dance would be used to counter it on the next turn. This is the match-up Cecil favors if possible.

Cecil’s goal would be a Rosie/Espie, Seifer/Lazzo, Seifer/Rocky series of match-ups, with Firion ready to face either Espie or Rocky if their initial opponent faints.
