Otherworlder Battle Tournament

Welcome to the Otherworlder Battle Tournament

This is where you'll be submitting your strategies for the Otherworlder Battle Tournament. Please only submit strategies here. If you have any questions, direct them to our Tournament FAQ.

A small reminder of the rules

  • You will start the battle with the pokemon you put in first place on your submission form.
  • You may only use one held item. If the item is consumable, you may replace it with the same item between matches.
  • There will be no item usage during these battles -- any healing done must come from the pokemon themselves.
  • You may only use moves from the pool you submitted earlier. Deviations from this may lead to a disqualification.
  • Mega-stones are not permitted during this tournament. Your pokemon may also not evolve.
  • If you do not submit your strategy before the deadline, your character will lose.

Initially, all comments on this post will be screened. Once a round has been completed, we will unscreen the strategy comments. Because the matches are not all happening at the same time, it is certainly possible for your character to watch other fights as they go down. As such, in later rounds, you are allowed to use information learned from earlier rounds i.e. if it is apparent in Round 1, that someone's pokemon has a certain ability, you may use that to build your strategy in a later round.

General match info: Thace uses hand-signs and code-words almost exclusively, to avoid giving opponents a split second to prepare that happens when one yells out the moves they want their Pokemon to use. For this match, he's handing Vruli the Expert Belt.

Horny the Rhyhorn

Knowledge: Thace very vividly remembers Brock's Rhyhorn and all the research into Rhyhorn that he did for that match, and while Horny is (Thace is certain) higher level and capped back down to just 60, Thace is always thorough when he researches. He also knows the possible abilities Rhyhorn has too. So expecting ground, rock, normal by default, and he won't be surprised if there are fighting moves too, on account that a lot of Rock/Ground types can learn at least one and that Rhyhorn's evos learn Hammer Arm. And due to possible Ability he expects that there will definitely be the powerful recoil moves because they're either powered up, or won't have the recoil. (Or it could have Lightning Rod which is a non-issue in this match. But Thace will assume it probably doesn't, just to be safe.) Since it's the very first match, he won't have time to research in depth what TMs Horny might know, so caution is the word of the day.

--so it's Vrig vs. Horny, and Thace grimaces internally. Not a good matchup for Vrig! However, Vrig is probably faster, so it will give her time to set up Magnet Rise to avoid the Earthquake (or other ground move) that Thace is expecting on the first turn. Her second turn is King's Shield so she can tank the eventual ground moves that will be used after Smack Down (which he's expecting on the second turn) nullifies her Magnet Rise. Third turn is Block, to keep Horny out (unless Gabi has already switched, in which case Thace is switching to tactics outlined under the other two). Then he's going to have Vrig use a pattern of Double Team to increase her evasion and Metal Sound to decrease Rocky's Sp. Def. until she starts getting low on HP or Rocky's Sp. Def won't go lower. Last turn before he has her switch out, he'll have Vrig use Sacred Sword to soften Rocky up for the real battler.

--Vruli! Vruli is the real battler, and thanks to those Metal Sounds, Horny's Sp. Def should be in the pits. Even if it isn't because Horny got switched with someone else and came back in later, she'll be the first one out against him this time. So she'll Supersonic right away, just in case. Then it's a Mud Slap (which does super effective damage, and reduces Horny's accuracy, also just in case) and Surf to hopefully finish it. Maybe a couple Surfs, if Sacred Sword didn't do much damage or a switch happened that prevented Vrig's strategy from completing. Vruli is trying to end it as quickly as possible, because she's weak to fighting moves that Horny surely knows a lot of!
----If Vruli is hit by a strong fighting move that drops her HP real low fast, or just takes a lot of damage before Horny faints, she will use Rest, and Snore to chip away at Horny's HP while she's asleep. And then back to the Surfs.

--If Vruli can't finish it, Acxa is ready to come in and fire off a quick Blizzard (100% accurate thanks to her Snow Warning generated hail) to hopefully end it once and for all before Rocky can hit her back in the rock weakness.

Rocky the Geodude:

Knowledge: Again, thanks to the Brock match, Thace has previous knowledge! About Golem, which is Geodude's final stage. He knows that Geodude probably isn't as tanky on account of being a pre-evo, but he's expecting every level up move that Golem would know, because it makes perfect sense that Rocky's trainer is asking him to hold off on evolving so he can get all the moves fast! (And if Rocky doesn't know them all, well, being over-prepared never hurts, right? Right.) He's expecting Steel, Ground, Rock, and Normal moves. He knows about Self-Destruct and Explosion although he hopes Gabi doesn't get desperate enough to have Rocky use them. Thace wouldn't be surprised if Rocky had Fighting moves, but he'd be expecting ones like Brick Break that are more common as TMs. And he's well aware of the dreaded Defense Curl + Rollout combo (he's used it himself before in battles with Ylnok, his Azumarill)... and probably faced it with Whitney's Miltank as well as Brock's Golem. Again, alas, he won't have had time to look into TMs.

--So, if Rocky is switched in for Horny on Vrig before she can Block it, Thace is expecting to face a TM move that's super effective but not Ground! He'd lean more towards said hypothetical move being Dark rather than Fire. So Vrig will switch from her intended Horny strategy, and use Laser Focus, followed up by Steel Beam. And then switch out fast. Thace is fairly sure she can tank one super effective Dark move before Steel Beam, but definitely not another after.
----Following Vrig in this scenario is Acxa! Because she resists Dark, is the fastest of Thace's team, and her Hidden Ability will start up a hail storm... which guarantees a 100% accurate Blizzard that's powered up by Laser Focus into a crit (or two or three). She's four times weak to Steel and weak to Rock, unfortunately, but Thace is hoping that the hail and her white coat will help her dodge if she stays back and is constantly on the move. And even if the expected Steel (or Rock) move hits, he's pretty sure she can tank one, and then she can Disable it, which should be enough to keep it locked down until the Blizzard(s) take care of things.

--If Rocky comes in when Horny faints, Vruli will already be out. If she's asleep due to Rest, she'll Snore at him to chip away at his HP until he wakes up. If she's awake, she'll immediately Supersonic and Taunt! Then she'll Mud-Slap and Double Team combo a couple times. Then Taunt refresh! Then Surf him to oblivion. If Rocky's moves end up hurting her a bunch before she's finished, she'll Rest+Snore again.

--If Vruli can't finish it, Acxa will come in and do the Laser Focus+ Blizzard combo while trying to keep a distance to avoid getting hit herself until the rock is down.

Snipper the Skorupi

Knowledge: Guess what Thace faced when he went up against Janine's elite team a while back? Drapion! So he'll be expecting all the moves a high level Drapion could throw at him, just in case. He also researched Drapion's possible abilities at the time. What he didn't look into was Skorupi's typing. He knows Drapion's typing of Poison/Dark very well, and will go with a default of guessing the same for the pre-evo. When/if things happen in the match that tell him Skorupi isn't also Poison/Dark, Thace will reason out that it could be pure Poison, pure Dark, or possibly a combo of another type (probably bug, it looks very buggy) and either Poison or Dark. He'll have to experiment by tossing out some moves to see which Skorupi actually is. He is totally prepared for this super strong high level Skorupi that was bumped down to 60! Completely prepared.

--If Snipper was switched with Horny before Vrig could get the Block in place, Vrig will do a quick Autotomise to raise her speed (Drapion is much faster; Thace is thinking Skorupi probably is too), and then Double Team, Double Team, Double Team. He figures Hidden Abilities are uncommon enough that it's probably not a waste of turns. And Vrig would need to hold on to knock down some of Skorupi's HP, vs super effective Dark attacks (at least Vrig is immune to the poison!). Once Thace is sure Vrig has the best chance of avoiding getting hit, he'll have her use Sacred Sword, which should be doing 1x damage on a Poison/Dark Pokemon. When it doesn't, because Skorupi is not actually Poison/Dark Thace will rethink things and try a Head Smash instead! Which he won't be able to pull off again because Vrig is going to be hurting already and Head Smash has a really high recoil. So it won't bring Snipper down, but a Rock move doing super-effective? That does confirm Poison/Bug. So Thace will tell Vrig to use Aerial Ace until he has to pull her out.
----Vruli will come in to finish it what Vrig goes out. Taunt, Supersonic and Howl first. Then Defense Curl and Rollout, which is probably the strongest move Vruli has that will do super effective. Vruli will repeat as needed, and Rest and Snore if she needs healing.

--If Vruli finished off Rocky (or Horny) and is still in, her first act is Taunt and Supersonic (as long as her HP is decent. Rest and Snore until she wakes up otherwise). Then Howl and a Double Team. With that setup, she then uses Earthquake! Which won't do the expected Super Effective damage. Huh. Thace will test his theory with a Zen Headbutt from Vruli. When that is super effective, he'll have Vruli go to town with it. Sure he could go into setup for Rollout, but really, he's found a good offense and it'll save time (and Vruli's HP, since she'll already have done a lot of tanking to setup)!
----If Vruli gets poisoned thanks to Snipper's moves, she'll hang on until her HP is getting really low to try for a knockout. If it doesn't happen instead of Rest, she'll use Endeavor before scampering out.

--If Vruli can't finish off Snipper, Thace will send in whichever of his other two have higher HP. If it is not the last battle, Vrig wins in case there's roughly the same amount of HP for both of them.
----First move is King's Shield. Then if Vrig is middling to high on HP, she is totally taking the time for a Laser Focus + Head Smash first. Otherwise, Laser Focus + Aerial Ace (middling HP) or just Aerial Ace (below middling). If that first attack isn't enough, King's Shield + Double Team before trying again. Thace is hoping not to need to use Rest+Sleep Talk because Power Trick is... unfortunate, but he will if Vrig is getting super low and this isn't the last battle of the match. Also, if Vrig needs to come in in this scenario after Acxa already made an attempt this is still the strategy.
----In case of Acxa, whether she gets sent in first, or comes in after Vrig already was in, her first move is Aurora Veil. Her second is Double Team, and she will totally Encore a non-Poison move if Snipper uses one against her. When she attacks, it will be with Laser Focused Extrasensory. She'll use Hail to refresh Aurora Veil after if needed, and will use Heal Bell if she gets poisoned. She'll use Rest and Sleep Talk if this isn't the last battle of the match.

General things:
If Thace is put into a position where no matter what he can do (switching/rest/etc) one of his Pokemon will faint the next turn, he will forfeit rather than allow one of his team to faint.
