Otherworlder Battle Tournament

Welcome to the Otherworlder Battle Tournament

This is where you'll be submitting your strategies for the Otherworlder Battle Tournament. Please only submit strategies here. If you have any questions, direct them to our Tournament FAQ.

A small reminder of the rules

  • You will start the battle with the pokemon you put in first place on your submission form.
  • You may only use one held item. If the item is consumable, you may replace it with the same item between matches.
  • There will be no item usage during these battles -- any healing done must come from the pokemon themselves.
  • You may only use moves from the pool you submitted earlier. Deviations from this may lead to a disqualification.
  • Mega-stones are not permitted during this tournament. Your pokemon may also not evolve.
  • If you do not submit your strategy before the deadline, your character will lose.

Initially, all comments on this post will be screened. Once a round has been completed, we will unscreen the strategy comments. Because the matches are not all happening at the same time, it is certainly possible for your character to watch other fights as they go down. As such, in later rounds, you are allowed to use information learned from earlier rounds i.e. if it is apparent in Round 1, that someone's pokemon has a certain ability, you may use that to build your strategy in a later round.

IMMEDIATE NOTES: Oxy the Haunter will be holding the Eviolite for this round, as Emporio determines her to be 'at most risk' when facing off against a Ghost pokemon, and also given his own personal experience raising a male meowstic. Torracat remains a mystery, but he can make an educated guess based on how many 'quadrupedal mammalian pokemon' have bite.

STRATEGY CONDENSED (For ease of judgement/reading):

Emporio starts immediately with Oxy the Haunter, opening with Hypnosis-

If Hypnosis misses and Oxy has high HP, Hypnosis is used again. If Hypnosis fails due to field/items immediately apparent to Emporio (which are noted to be continuous somehow), she uses Sucker Punch.

This is followed with Confuse Ray, and Sucker Punch again, repeated while HP remains high- Confuse Ray is refreshed as needed during this time. If her HP is low (55% or less remaining from one hit/25% remaining within 3 attacks) in any circumstance, she uses Destiny Bond.

If Hypnosis was immediately effective, and her opponent was not swapped out- She uses Confuse Ray, Sucker Punch until enemy pokemon wakes, and Hypnosis again. If her opponent was swapped out, she uses Mean Look first, and then follows with the aforementioned strategy.

If the second Hypnosis misses; see above- High HP, use again. 'Low' HP from one hit, Destiny Bond.

If the second Hypnosis succeeds, follow in all cases with- Hex until Awake, then Hypnosis (see above for Hit/Miss pattern), before repeating with Hex again.

If Hypnosis succeeds but HP is 55% or less, Oxy will use Dream Eater, and then Hex on repeat once more. If HP becomes low (55% or more damage from one hit OR 30% HP remaining) and enemy pokemon is awake, she will use Destiny Bond.

In the event that Oxy can no longer use Hex she will use Shadow Ball instead.

If opponent is defeated, repeat the above process for next pokemon only if more than half her HP remains.

If Oxy faints, or if she has less than half HP when the next battle begins; Domino the Krokorok is sent out instead.

If against Aegislash or Meowstic, AND if either pokemon raised stats in the prior battle, he opens with Power Trip; otherwise, he opens with Sandstorm- in both cases, the second move is Torment. Follow with Bite, repeatedly, against Meowstic; follow instead with Foul Play repeatedly against Aegislash Blade Form (due to stat based damage), Hone Claws and Scary Face against Shield Form to boost/lower stats.

If, while against Aegislash, Aegislash remains in Shield Form for two turns in a row; utilize the 'Torracat' strategy below.

If against Torracat, open with Sandstorm no matter what, followed by Sand Tomb and Dig- repeat using Dig until a pokemon faints on either side. In the event that Domino can no longer use Dig, he will switch to Earthquake. Note- Domino's ability 'Moxie' will raise attack stat per pokemon defeated.

If Oxy and Domino both faint OR both have less than half their HP at the call for the next battle; Presto the Kadabra enters the field. Note- Presto is Immune to Flinch due to 'Inner Focus'.

In all below cases where Presto's Hypnosis misses- Hypnosis is used again. If Hypnosis fails due to observable moves/items continuously in play on the field OR due to a lack of PP- continue the strategy with Hypnosis skipped.

Against Meowstic- Kinesis first, Hypnosis next. Once asleep, use Psychic Terrain followed by Psychic on repeat. Hypnosis is used again if Meowstic wakes, and Psychic Terrain is refreshed when field effect disappears.

Against Torracat- Psychic Terrain, Reflect, then Hypnosis- Psychic is used on repeat afterward. Hypnosis is repeated/refreshed when pokemon wakes. Psychic Terrain and Reflect are refreshed as each run out. Psychic is used until the pokemon is otherwise defeated.

Against Aegislash- Hypnosis first, followed by Psychic Terrain. Hypnosis is prioritized if Aegislash wakes, Reflect if not. Reflect and Psychic Terrain are then refreshed as needed, as is Hypnosis. Psychic is used at all other times, until the pokemon is defeated.

In ALL cases, if Presto is unable to use Psychic, she will use Psybeam. In ALL cases, if Presto's opponent is asleep, and her HP is low, she will use Recover.

Presto remains on the field until defeated; if defeated, and the other pokemon still remain, Domino is returned to the field first, followed by (if Domino is defeated), Oxy, in that order. Domino and Oxy's strategies are the same as noted above in each scenario. (Domino's Aegislash strategy for Aegislash, etc etc)

STRATEGY WITH PROSE:

As Emporio enters the field for what is technically his second fight, people might already be noting with some anticipation that something feels different about this compared to his Gym Battles. Even the two 'newer' members of his team will have shown this by now- as despite any delays on submitting, both Presto and Domino will have been used in some Gym Challenges prior the tournament.

(If things head particularly south for Emporio in fact, Presto's fighting might just be a strong reflection of how vs Sabrina went for her)

In any case, during a Gym Challenge Emporio seeks to pit opposite against opposite to provide a challenge- while equipped with some sort of move to cover their strongest weakness in a fight, the ultimate fact is he trains them for combat 'against the wind' so to say.

But this is no Gym Challenge, and Emporio is aiming to win with ANYTHING he can.

As far as Emporio is concerned, Aegislash will be his strongest threat in the fight; it's a pokemon he hasn't had experience raising, and- unlike the Torracat- one that is fully evolved. He knows enough from Jolyne to be aware of its Stance Change and typing, but that's about it- but he does, hopefully, have one thing Oxy can use against it to her advantage.

Speed. For which she fortuitously outstrips the other in base stats by a decent amount.

Much as Emporio doesn't know the specifics of THAT, he wastes no time in getting Oxy to act once they're on the field- early bird gets the worm and all that. Regardless of if Keith swaps pokemon out, it hopefully works in his favor. Using his typical method of calling attacks as seemingly innocuous phrases, he calls for Oxy to 'drop 'm'- using Hypnosis to get whatever is in front of her asleep as fast as possible. If Keith swapped a pokemon out Mean Look follows to keep Keith from swapping the pokemon out again (that Aegislash is scary alright), but no matter what, whoever is in front of Oxy is getting dosed with Confuse Ray as well- when this thing wakes up, if Oxy gives it a chance to wake, it's going to be incredibly discombobulated. Oxy uses Sucker Punch ('Don't let them recover!') until such a time it DOES- after that it's another hypnosis, and the real 'fight' can begin.

Of course all of the above also hinges on Hypnosis working; if Hypnosis misses, and Oxy still has a good pool of HP remaining, Emporio tries for Hypnosis again- but if something on the field, or some item in play is what obviously prevents it from working, he instead skips right to Sucker Punch in hopes of catching the opponent off guard, tossing in Confuse Ray as well before focusing on what amounts to a 'Punch Punch Kiss' strategy via repeated Sucker Punches and Confuse Ray refreshes. If that first attempt at Hypnosis cost Oxy a significant amount of HP however, she ultimately has to use Destiny Bond ('LIKE HERMANA WOULD!') to be safe- anything that hits that hard after all, will be the primary threat, worth taking off the field at any cost. Either the enemy will be too slow to even strike, or they're going down with her.

Beyond that though, we're assuming Hypnosis took effect- at which point, it comes down to if Keith swapped pokemon or not.

In the unlikely event that Keith DID swap out, the following happens. If, for some bananas reason it was Meowstic brought out (incredibly unlikely), Oxy has little reason to not simply go to town with Hex- Emporio isn't looking to stall and snooze Meowstic. He knows full well that Meowstic goes down under Ghost Type, and that Oxy's special attack is her greatest strength.

With Torracat it's much the same- albeit without the obvious weakness to take advantage of.

[Emporio voice] Torracat is just...Fire type right?

Little does Emporio know, but whether boosted by an item or otherwise, Torracat's greatest weakness turns out to be its defenses; which means that having his Haunter swoop in constantly with Hex while the pokemon sleeps is...Actually a pretty good idea. Oxy darts back and forth with each and every blow, a blur of violet prepared to follow with Hypnosis and then Dream Eater should the cat wake and lash out.

And this isn't especially different in the case of Aegislash either. If Emporio successfully gets the drop on the spooky sword, he's going to successfully have given himself a boost and a handicap- as assuming Aegislash came out in Shield Forme, Oxy's potshotting becomes very potshotty as she alternates between Hex, Hypnosis, and Sucker Punch.

Of course, there is the last minute Destiny Bond she tries to pull if things grow alarmingly dire...and in the event she simply runs out of the energy needed to use Hex (or Sucker Punch for that matter- Physical Attack isn't her forte, so she's likely to run out of steam there first), her swap to using Shadow Ball instead.

But now, the important thing.

What happens if one of those three gets the drop on Oxy?

Well first of all if Brel gets the drop on Oxy then claps for Brel, because waaaaao-

In all situations where Oxy goes down or has to be held back from the next battle, the next pokemon prioritized is Domino- Keith's line up is consistently weak to ether Ground or Dark, something that Domino not only has in spades on the moveset, but also has a STAB with.

(It's just that, also, Domino has slightly less special defense, and at least Oxy has a pile of status nonsense to turn the tide maybe. Still faster than Aegislash though!)

Provided the fight against Oxy has given the opponent time to boost their stats, Emporio opens up knowingly with Power Trip ('Knock 'm down!') if Domino is facing Aegislash or Meowstic- otherwise he opens with a Sandstorm to get things ready.

Against Torracat however, he starts with Sandstorm no matter what, following with Sand Tomb to get some incremental damage in for an edge, and Dig ('Take shelter!') to get the heck outta dodge. While Krokorok have decent attack, their defenses are lacking incredibly, and Emporio doesn't want to stake things on a powerful blast in this scenario. Any advantage that he can get, he's chasing, and Krokorok will be digging around that cat and doing his best to dodge any actual above-ground-blows as much as possible. ...So he's going to keep using Dig for as long as possible, only switching to Earthquake when a 'powerful blast' is all he's got.

Of course, focusing back on Aegislash and Meowstic, Domino doesn't just stick to that opening Power Trip/Sandstorm. Against both, he quickly tosses out Torment- preventing any move spam. He also makes use of Bite ('JAWS!'), as while the damage is lesser, the STAB helps combat that, and the chance of causing Brel to flinch is ideal. Aegislash gets unique treatment however- against Aegislash, Domino follows that first Power Trip with Foul Play in the event that Kolivan is in Blade Form, and focuses on Scary Face and Hone Claws ('Take your time!') while they're in Shield Form, buffing his own power and gaining a bit of speed.

(Note: If for whatever reason Aegislash remains in Shield Form for two turns in a row, Domino will begin using the same strategy he employs against Torracat; Sand Tomb, Dig, Earthquake.)

Moxie, Domino's ability, will come in handy here- for each pokemon Domino takes out, his Attack stat will be raised.

There is of course, still a strong chance that Domino as well goes down or needs a breather- in which case it comes to the final defense created by Presto. ...Who, being real, is not exactly made for this fight! Poor girl.

If pressed though she'll do her best- Inner Focus, her ability, will at least keep her from flinching and additionally block Intimidate, so there is that. (Not that. Her opponents have Intimidate, but they DO have flinch moves!)

First thing's first though- Presto needs to bring herself a Field Advantage in the most literal sense, and that means Psychic Terrain...Unless she's against that Meowstic, in which case she just goes right for the Kinesis; Presto has two good stats on her. Speed, and Special Attack, and with any luck that'll mean knocking Brel down a peg before going in with Hypnosis and then Psychic Terrain (now that Brel can't use it against her)- before spamming Psychic ('Keep calm!'). There's not a whole lot that Presto can do against her own typing after all- not beyond doing her best to keep them from moving while she slams down with her One Thing.

It's similar against Red the Torracat- after laying down the Terrain in this case, she swiftly follows with Hypnosis to put the snooze on her opponent, before setting up a shield with Reflect...and then using Psychic as many times as possible. Red being Fire Type (and fortunately not Fire DARK as Emporio would have feared), it...Hits normally. ...Well as normally as a STAB on Psychic Terrain anyway.

Aegislash, as expected, is the real risk. Presto starts with Hypnosis first in this case, following immediately with Psychic Terrain, but once that's settled and Kolivan is still sleeping, she follows up with Reflect...and from there she's quick to use Psychic as much as possible, Hypnosis when it looks like the thing is about to get up, and lastly Psychic Terrain to refresh the field when it fades...not to mention refreshing Reflect, which against a strong attacker like Kolivan, is better than nothing- as if this thing wakes up that's very likely IT for Presto.

Naturally, when it looks like things are grim- and while the enemy is asleep- Presto will also be using Recover, boosting their health back up as needed. It's also worth noting that as Psychic only has so many uses- 10 to be precise- if Presto is forced to drag things out to the point she can't use Psychic any longer, she'll instead be using Psybeam.

...though hopefully, as bananas as That end of the strategy is, it doesn't come down to that.

(These strategies assume Hypnosis succeeds of course- but if Hypnosis simply misses, Emporio will have her use it again...and if Hypnosis fails outright for whatever reason that can't be removed- ie Misty Terrain, or a consumable item- then all of Presto's strategies carry on as normal..............except without Hypnosis. Good luck Presto!)

Naturally in situations where Presto was sent to the field due to low health on the part of the others, this priorty becomes reversed! If Presto ultimately faints, then the next one to the field is Domino, using the strategies noted above. If Domino in turn faints and Oxy is around, then it's her turn to return to the field.

Here's hoping Emporio doesn't just flat out run out of pokemon ey?
