Otherworlder Battle Tournament

Welcome to the Otherworlder Battle Tournament

This is where you'll be submitting your strategies for the Otherworlder Battle Tournament. Please only submit strategies here. If you have any questions, direct them to our Tournament FAQ.

A small reminder of the rules

  • You will start the battle with the pokemon you put in first place on your submission form.
  • You may only use one held item. If the item is consumable, you may replace it with the same item between matches.
  • There will be no item usage during these battles -- any healing done must come from the pokemon themselves.
  • You may only use moves from the pool you submitted earlier. Deviations from this may lead to a disqualification.
  • Mega-stones are not permitted during this tournament. Your pokemon may also not evolve.
  • If you do not submit your strategy before the deadline, your character will lose.

Initially, all comments on this post will be screened. Once a round has been completed, we will unscreen the strategy comments. Because the matches are not all happening at the same time, it is certainly possible for your character to watch other fights as they go down. As such, in later rounds, you are allowed to use information learned from earlier rounds i.e. if it is apparent in Round 1, that someone's pokemon has a certain ability, you may use that to build your strategy in a later round.

IMMEDIATE NOTES: Going in, Emporio's knowledge of Clefable, Lucario, and Gyarados are largely limited to what he's seen of Cecil's prior matches; so he knows Lucario's typings, and some of their moves, but that's it. (He does, however, have an idea of Cecil's strategies thus far though- and as Clefable and Gyarados have been encountered in earlier gym battles, a far greater understanding of their usual fight pool.)

Because of this, Oxy is once again receiving the Eviolite; Emporio suspects she'll at minimum be 'tanking' against some of this to pave way for the others.

STRATEGY CONDENSED: Oxy the Haunter is equipped with Eviolite, and first on the field, opening with Hypnosis;

- If Hypnosis succeeds, regardless of what pokemon is on the field, follow with Mean Look, and Confuse Ray. Use Hypnosis again; if it fails, and Oxy's HP is already low (defined in all cases as either 50% down in one hit, or 25% over all), use Destiny Bond.
-- If Hypnosis succeeds a second time;
Against Clefable- Use Sludge Bomb, Repeatedly (Hypnosis when waking; if it misses, see above for low HP response. High HP, continue to use Sludge Bomb).
Against Lucario, or Gyarados- Use Hex, Repeatedly (Hypnosis when waking; if it misses, see above for low HP response. If High HP, attempt again).
--- When Hypnosis lands, and HP is low (Under 50% HP), Oxy will use Dream Eater no matter the opponent. ('Hypnosis HP Recovery Strategy')
--- If Gyarados has been sent to the field, and uses Roar, refer to applicable pokemon's strategy for Gyarados (ie: Domino vs Gyarados, Presto vs Gyarados, as below).

- If Hypnosis misses, and-
-- Clefable remains on the field; Mean Look, followed by Confuse Ray, before attacking repeatedly with Sludge Bomb. If Oxy's HP lowers by 50% or more in one hit, OR her HP hits 25%, she will use Destiny Bond.
-- Lucario has entered the field; Sucker Punch, followed by Mean Look. Follow with Hypnosis strategy as noted above for Lucario, including the responses to low HP.
-- Gyarados has entered the field; Confuse Ray. If Gyarados has used Dragon Dance- Sucker Punch. If not- Hypnosis (See Hypnosis strategy above if successful).
--- If Sucker Punch was used- continue to use Sucker Punch until either Gyarados faints, or hits Oxy for 50%+ damage in one turn/until Oxy's HP reaches 30%; use Destiny Bond in this scenario. In the event Sucker Punch cannot be used/has failed even once; Oxy will attempt the Hypnosis strategy again (See Hypnosis strategy above if successful).
--- If Hypnosis fails in any scenario against Gyarados, and HP is now low (Under 50% in one hit, OR her HP hits 30% within two), Oxy will use Destiny Bond. If Hypnosis fails, her HP is still reasonably high (more than 50% over the last two turns), AND Gyarados has not used Dragon Dance more than once; Curse, followed by Destiny Bond.
---- In the event Destiny Bond is used, and fails for whatever reason; alternate with Hypnosis, following 'Hypnosis HP Recovery Strategy' when successful, using Destiny Bond when not.
---- If Oxy can no longer use Destiny Bond OR Hypnosis in this scenario; attack, as long as possible, with Sucker Punch. If Sucker Punch fails even once; Shadow Ball.
--- In the event Gyarados has used Roar while on the field; refer to applicable pokemon's strategy as noted farther below.

In the event Hypnosis can no longer be used for any reason: See immediate note above. If Hex can no longer be used- Switch to Shadow Ball. If Sludge Bomb can no longer be used- Switch to Hex if sleeping or poisoned, Shadow Ball if not. If Shadow Ball can no longer be used, and the opponent has not raised their speed- Sucker Punch. If Shadow Ball can no longer be used, and the opponent HAS raised their speed- Night Shade.

In the event Destiny Bond cannot be used at all, rather than simply failing: Attack using moves according to the above strategy (Sludge Bomb against Clefable/Hex against sleeping Lucario & Gyarados/Shadow Ball otherwise).

In the event that Oxy either- ends a battle with 50% or less HP, or Faints: Presto the Kadabra takes priority against Clefable and Lucario. Domino the Krokorok takes priority against Gyarados.

If Presto is next on the field- Against Clefable, open with Psychic Terrain. Against Lucario, open with Reflect.

- Follow with Hypnosis in all cases; if successful, either use Psychic Terrain (vs Lucario), or immediately begin to attack using Psychic.
-- If Hypnosis fails; attempt again until successful, refreshing Reflect as necessary against Lucario.
--- Hypnosis will be refreshed when pokemon wake. Psychic Terrain will be refreshed when the field effect clears, and takes priority over Hypnosis when facing Clefable. Reflect will be refreshed when the effect clears, against Lucario, and takes priority over Hypnosis.
--- If HP is below 50%, and opponent is asleep; Presto will use Recover.

If Presto has been forced into battle against Gyarados- Open with Hypnosis, until successful. Once successful, if HP is under 50%, use Recover, followed by Reflect. Re-use Hypnosis when opponent awakens (repeating the above until successful, with exception of Reflect unless Reflect has lost effect).

- When a chance is found- (HP above 50%, Gyarados asleep, Reflect in play)- use Psychic Terrain, and begin to use Kinesis. Refresh Hypnosis as a priority, followed by Reflect and Psychic Terrain.
-- In the event Hypnosis at ANY TIME is failing due to a visible effect or item on the field, Psychic Terrain will take priority in an attempt to replace field conditions. In the event refreshing Psychic Terrain does not solve this problem; skip Hypnosis in the strategy loop.
-- If Hypnosis runs out of PP; skip Hypnosis in the strategy loop.

The above strategy will be looped until Kinesis has been successful 6 Times. After this, Presto will instead attack using Psychic, refreshing Reflect and Psychic Terrain, but not Hypnosis. If Psychic cannot be used anymore, switch to Psybeam.

In the event that Presto either- ends a battle with 50% or less HP, or Faints: Oxy the Haunter takes first priority in all battles, followed by Domino.

If Domino is next on the field- Against Gyarados, Domino will immediately begin to attack using Foul Play. In the event that Domino cannot use Foul Play, he will instead use Rock Slide. This persists until either Gyarados faints, or Domino faints.

Against Lucario, open with Dig, and repeat until either pokemon faints.

Against Clefable, open with Iron Tail, and repeat until either pokemon faints.

In the event that none of the above attacks can be used: Domino will prioritize Crunch against Gyarados, and Earthquake against Lucario and Clefable.

Note; Foul Play will use Gyarados' Attack Stat for calculation, and accounts for their Raised Attack.

Note; Moxie will raise Domino's Attack by one each time they defeat an opponent. Iron Tail may lower Clefable's defense.

In the event that Domino either- ends a battle with 50% or less HP, or Faints: Oxy the Haunter takes first priority in all battles, followed by Presto.

STRATEGY (PROSE): It goes without saying that reusing the same strategy over and over is about the fastest way to be tripped up and tossed out of the arena in any scenario. Does that mean Emporio is going to start with something different, as opposed to re-using his Hypnosis-Hex-Shutdown?

No, because there's also the saying 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. Though he's certainly got more than the Hypnosis Hex Strategy up his sleeve.

After watching Cecil's earlier matches, it's a good thing too- aside from the fact that his opponent won't be afraid to swap out (which could severely hurt Emporio this time around), his opponent has at least one pokemon with Roar on top of that. Which means...he can't necessarily rely on having the pokemon he wants on the field either.

Still- no harm in trying what works, which is why Emporio opens up with Hypnosis, and hopes it lands- either on the Clefable before him, or if his guess is right, one of the others on Cecil's team...for while Haunter doesn't normally learn any poison moves, Emporio knows he can't assume his opponent knows that/expects a pokemon with no poison attacks- and it only makes sense to get Clefable the hell outta dodge when a poison move is on hand.

If Hypnosis succeeds, it's the same old dance for the most part- provided Cecil switched to Lucario or Gyarados, Oxy starts by locking the opponent in with Mean Look and Confused Ray using Hex like her life depends on it- ready to switch over to Dream Eater, or even swapping to Sucker Punch and Shadow Ball depending onn how much faster or not faster she is than the enemy- refreshing Hypnosis as needed is all well and good after all...but if it's not landing, then she needs to change it up. Heck, even Night Shade is better at that point- it's a sweet 60HP of damage no matter what after all.

But what about Clefable, then? Well that's a little different; because after all, Oxy does have a poison move. 'PAINT 'M PURPLE!'

Sludge Bomb.

And the minute that Clefable is in sight, regardless of if Hypnosis can take any effect, Sludge Bomb is being launched repeatedly until they go down- a STAB of Super Effective Sorts is always going to do better than a STAB that lacks it.

It's unknown just how well the strategy will carry Oxy, but not just because of how long Oxy may or may not last- Emporio watched Cecil's last matches, and he knows that if Gyarados is on the field he has more to worry about than just the pokemon's power.

He also has to worry about Roar. If Gyarados comes in Roaring and rampaging, Oxy- Emporio's arguable trump card- now leaves the field, and Emporio doesn't even get to choose who comes out, unlike if the first fight simply ends. All he can do is hope that Domino is the one who comes out...

Because the minute Domino comes out, Emporio's ready to take advantage of Cecil's habit of setting up the field and attack. Gyarados has a lot more attack power than Krokorok- if he's adding Dragon Dance to the mix, that only goes up.

Which is a shame, when Krokorok has a STAB for Foul Play- a move that Emporio orders Domino to use immediately, and with no hesitation while hopefully dodging the more intense blasts getting thrown his way, as he shouts 'Turn the Tide!'.

(All while using the flinch inducing super effective Rock Slide once Foul Play runs out of energy, and following with the defense lowering Crunch if even that fails.)

If Presto has to come out though, she has very little chance to pull through- but Emporio knows that swapping out will waste a turn, so he'll work with what he's got. Presto is told to 'Copy Teacher'- using Hypnosis until it's successful, Recover to patch herself back up if needed, and Reflect to maybe, just maybe take that edge off.

And then...she starts the long haul. Emporio doesn't expect Presto to do well, but he does know she stands a good shot at knocking the dragon fish down a few pegs- having her repeat the Hypnosis-Recover-Reflect process as needed, the minute she's topped off, Gyarados is slumbering, and Reflect is up all at once?

Now show him the Sandman!

She starts using Kinesis- alternating with the Hypnosis strategy as she needs- aiming to hit the pokemon until he's been dosed a full six times with the accuracy draining mind-whammy. Only then does she add Psychic Terrain to her loop as a replacement for Hypnosis, per the instruction of now 'Bringing it to [her] level'- because with any luck now, Gyarados won't be able to even blink in her direction let alone hit her.

Which leaves him plenty open for Psychic, boosted to double strength.

Ultimately, no matter who brings Gyarados down, Emporio has a preference for who fights who- and unless a pokemon has less than half their health when their opponent goes down, that pokemon tends to remain on the field as well. Domino has the equipment needed to keep going if something faints, as Moxie only increases his power- making Iron Tail a brutal beatstick against Clefable, and Dig the perfect way to bob and weave around Lucario's impressive strength before taking advantage of a STAB weakness...using Earthquake if it comes down to it.

Presto meanwhile, has a field advantage if she's taken down someone else, and that means continuing more of the same- Hypnosis remains a staple part of the attack loop against everyone else, but rather than prioritizing an accuracy lowering strategy, Presto takes the risk and 'Go[es] all in!'- because while Lucario and Clefable are nothing to sneeze at, part of her strategy against Gyarados was primarily to soften him up for a beating from the others. If she's made it through? It's Go Time while she still can, and she's hitting everything with Psychic as hard as possible.

At the end of the day though, shuffling teams aside, Emporio's priority falls time and time again on Oxy; where possible, Emporio keeps her on the field where her Eviolite can help her tank a hit more than the feeble glass canons that are her teammates- sabotaging the opposite end until they...hopefully go down. Hopefully.

These guys are kinda strong after all.
