Character Name: London Tipton Series: The Suite Life On Deck (Spin-off of the Suite Life of Zack and Cody) Timeline: circa 2011 (Post Series). London is 18 at the series finale.
Canon Resource Links: Information about London’s background can be found here and here!
Personality: London Tipton is a ditzy, carefree, spoiled heiress who embraces the finer things in life and was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. (Her namesake is a spoof of Paris Hilton.) Her birthday is October 6th, making her a Libra, and she fits it well. She is very into beauty, aesthetics, wealth, and lavish and luxurious self-care, always wanting to look her best at all times. She often out-dresses everyone around her. She is sweet and charming when she wants to be, often using her charm, or far more frequently, her money, to get what she wants from people. She finds money is often the most direct approach, and in her day-to-day life, she rarely has to ask for things, as they are taken care of and provided for her.
She is bubbly and cheerful when things are going her way, and even when they aren’t, she’s not happy about it, but she either finds ways to bring herself a bit of joy, or those around her manage to distract her with something to occupy her mind. Kind of like giving a crying baby a set of jingling keys. She is notoriously bad at spelling, and it’s not uncommon for her to misread something, causing her to misinterpret the meaning of a given text. Although London is far from the sharpest knife in the drawer, her positivity is overwhelming. She is quite often seen as an airhead to those who spend just a bit of time around her, but people tend to stick around for London’s cheerfulness and charm, and she’s had more than a few hopeless romantics pining over her, even to the point of completely overlooking her less than stellar intellect.
She has a somewhat strained relationship with her father, Wilfred Tipton, as he is never around and has only appeared physically three times throughout the original and spin-off series combined. His face had never been shown until near the end of the final season. Extremely wealthy, and always one to get rid of problems when they can’t be resolved, Mr. Tipton has married, divorced and re-married approximately 15 times by the end of the series. He even got rid of London’s romantic competition by marrying her and effectively removing her from the equation altogether.
Although she rarely sees him in person, she can usually get ahold of him via phone and is often reaching out to him to solve problems that she can’t charm or bribe her way out of, or to just ask for things on a whim. His willingness to solve all of her problems with money has conditioned London to expect that all problems can be solved with money, and although her father wants the best for London, like a good education and to learn the value of money, London hides a level of resentment that he’s never physically there, which seems to be absolved whenever he does show up. When London gets a little too frivolous with her spending or when she isn’t taking her education with a modicum of seriousness, which is often, Wilfred Tipton does on occasion threaten to shrink her allowance or cut off her inheritance, which is, in and of itself, a bribe, but it nonetheless lights a fire under her feet to do a little better. And she always manages to do just enough to stay in his good graces, even if it’s the bare minimum.
Because of her father’s absence, London primarily finds solace in shopping and indulging in expensive, shiny things to fill the void, and has come to see one of the Tipton’s most prized employees, and the man Wilfred often charges with keeping an eye on London, Mr. Moseby, as a close father figure. Moseby had practically been the one to raise London ever since she was very small and her mother, Mr. Tipton’s 3rd wife, was divorced out of the picture. It’s because of Mr. Moseby that London has the capacity to show compassion to others that she never learned to show from her dad.
London often shows disdain for the poor people’s lifestyle, simply because she cannot fathom what it’s like to be poor. She’s not afraid to flaunt her wealth in front of her friends by gloating, reminding them of her status, bribing them to do her bidding, or being just plain unfair. Of course, they have been known to take her down a peg or two when she steps too far out of line. But she is aware that money makes the world go around, and it’s generally something that everyone wants, which is why she’s so open about bribery. When bribery fails her, London does tend to start somewhat really listening to people, as most people who won’t accept a bribe tend to have strong convictions. This is one of the two ways London makes friends. The other is by initially bribing them and eventually becoming cognizant of their goals, desires, and ambitions. When London does make friends, she is extremely loyal to them for the most part. She even lets her generosity take over in response to their kindness, and will often return a favor that she takes to heart tenfold. Even if she finds herself at a crossroads between getting what she wants and betraying a friend for it, she may end up doing a little soul searching before eventually coming around to making the right decision, even if she isn’t all that jazzed about it at first.
Although London is a spoiled heiress, she does occasionally show bouts of generosity, which may come as a surprise to many. Growing up, London eventually learns that everyone deserves happiness, whether or not they can afford it, and in spite of her industrialized upbringing, her close friends have taught her the importance of the environment and ecosystems. She has since bought expensive gifts and toys for children’s charities, and she even wrote a check for $10 million to restore an island environment after her father’s deforestation of the island killed their economy by driving away their main tourism draw of tropical birds.
London’s generosity doesn’t just stem from guilt, however. Whenever she goes out to eat, not only do the service staff often recognize her, but they end up extremely lucky to serve her, as she tends to graciously overtip. On occasion, when her poor friends express not being able to afford something, she’s been known every once in a while to reach into her designer clutch and pull out a wad of cash, although usually for a “small” favor. Those who have caught onto her generosity also tend to take advantage of her gullibility as well. Of all her friends, Zack is probably the one who tries to trick London into turning him a profit. He’s also the one who is the most willingly susceptible to her bribes. London’s gullibility doesn’t take much of a financial toll on her, but can sometimes take an emotional toll. She once fell in love with a hot grifter in Italy who feigned wanting to go to a prestigious performing arts school that he couldn’t afford, and London happily handed him $100,000 in cash on the spot out of the goodness of her heart without batting an eye. But when he repaid her by taking off and standing her up for the date they’d planned, she was left emotionally devastated.
London is very much a princess, preferring not to have to lift a finger, and considering the fact that she is an heiress of Tipton enterprises, she is often of the mindset that she doesn’t have to lift a finger. This is why, although she had been encouraged to go to school throughout her youth, she never took school seriously. Even aboard the S.S. Tipton where her father placed her in a floating high school so it would be harder for her to skip class, she makes the most of her time in Ms. Tutweiller’s class by blatantly reading magazines and tabloids, texting, touching up her makeup and nails, and ragging on Ms. Tutweiller for her poor fashion choices, bad hair and nails, and the fact that she’s single and alone in her thirties, all from her center-of-attention spot in the front row of the class. London sometimes puts an effort into her assignments, particularly when daddy threatens to cut her allowance by another million if her grades don’t improve, and will resort to lining her school papers with $100 bills, adding color swatches of her favorite makeup, and actually writing something. No matter how misinterpreted and inaccurate it is, it usually earns London a D just because it’s something different from the kids who did their book report based on the movie again.
On occasion, London does prove that she’s smarter than people assume she is, even if it is by luck. As physically far removed as she is from her father most of the time, she’s actually picked up on some of his business practices, and it’s not unheard of that she has the makings of a savvy entrepreneur somewhere inside of her. It’s this bit of occasional care for her own progress, along with the occasional help of Cody and Bailey, two of her good friends and the smartest two kids to ever exist, that London manages to stay afloat. Their favors make London realize how lucky she is that they never really abandon her, like some of her rich friends have done in the past. London manages to graduate with the rest of her class, which is something that she hadn’t much cared about until she realized that all of her friends would be leaving her behind.

London emerges into the fading sunlight after having spent her first full day in Rocket training. Finally graduating from Seven Seas High had brought London a sense of accomplishment, but now that she’s found herself in Rocket bootcamp, it doesn’t feel like much of a step up.
“Finally done with that stupid Sea school and now I have to go to stupid R school?” She sighs. The building isn’t too far from an ocean view, which one of the things London really enjoyed about Seven Seas High; it had been on the S.S. Tipton, her father’s luxury cruise liner. As she leans on the railing that overlooks the sea, she feels a bit off kilter and her calves feel sore. The boots that come with her uniform are flat, and London isn’t used to wearing anything shy of a three inch heel.
There’s something a tad different about the sea view, London realizes. The seagulls aren’t like any seagull she’s ever seen flying over the S.S. Tipton. Even some of the fish that neared the surface down below her strike her as odd. After a moment, she brings her attention to the two pokéballs at her hip, hanging from the less-than-fashionable belt (it could be way uglier, and at least it kinda goes with the look). She’d had a crash course in the world of Pokémon and wondered if every creature here was a pokémon. She lets out the two creatures she’d been given, and is unnecessarily startled by one of them.
“Ahhh!”
The enormous purple snake that emerges extends herself tall and London could almost swear she was smiling. ”Ekanssss!”
“Oh, right! I almost forgot they gave me a giant snake as my poké partner. Ooh, and a gold star!” The Staryu that had emerged from the other pokéball tilts upward toward her, somehow giving her a faceless quizzical look. Ekans slithers up to London and she reaches out to gently pet her shining purple scales. “You’re really scary, you know that?” Ekans seems to take it as a compliment. London suddenly brightens, as if she’s just had the best idea.
“Ooh! I know what would make you less scary… SPARKLES! What about earrings?… no, snakes don’t have ears. Ooh, rings!… No, snakes don’t have fingers.” Then it hits her: the best idea. “How about a necklace! You’re like, a hundred percent neck and five percent head!”
Regardless of London’s terrible math, Ekans seems pleased.
