APPLICATIONS

APPLICATIONS!
Currently: Open!
Applications are checked roughly weekly unless otherwise stated.

  • We ask that potential applicants post their application in comments rather than linking. If their application contains explicit references to 'hard' spoilers (character death, unforeseen plot twists, big reveals, he was evil all along etc), players should put the application in their own journal or their character's journal and link it, making sure to mention the presence of spoilers within. For further clarification on our spoilers policy and whether or not your application needs to be linked, please check this page. Thank you for your cooperation!

  • The comment character limit on Dreamwidth is 16,000 characters so apps no longer need to be split into multiple comments; however this is at players' discretion.

  • While players are welcome to play multiple characters (five characters maximum are allowed per player!), please only apply for one character at a time, and wait for a decision before submitting another application!

  • A reminder for those waiting to hear back: Please don't be worried if we skip yours while going through them. It only means we needed a little more time to research!

  • Please use the form below to apply! If you have any questions, feel free to ask any of the mods.

    Character
    Name: Murphy Pendleton
    Series: Silent Hill
    Timeline: Post-Truth & Justice ending

Notable choices & ending for this portrayal: Help Anne, Taunt JP, Spare Anne. Truth & Justice ending. This puts Murphy in a morally grey area overall and ultimately means he killed Patrick Napier but didn’t kill Frank Coleridge, and was able to escape Silent Hill.

    Personality:
Murphy is, in a word, distant. He’s soft spoken and keeps his head down for all intents and purposes, and prefers avoiding people altogether rather than engaging them. His aloofness and the curt way in which he speaks to strangers can make him seem callous, but in reality, he is anything but.

While he is brusque in manner and easily frustrated, he is slow to anger, and usually only grows irate when he is personally attacked multiple times or extremely sensitive subjects are brought into question. He displays great patience and empathy with other people, even when they are hostile toward him, and doesn’t often fail to come to the aid of those who appear to need it. He is especially kind and protective towards young children, mindful to keep vulgar language to a minimum and maintain a gentle demeanor, and grows vehemently angry and distressed when their safety is jeopardized.

There is certainly a guarded nature about him, but it was cultivated for appropriate reason. Having felt judged and dismissed by others, even loved ones, his entire life, and hyperaware of the stigma he now bears as a convict, Murphy simply keeps his distance and doesn’t strike at those who haven’t, in his eyes, wronged him or someone else unfairly. Other people appear to be among his greatest fears, all of the creatures spawned from his psyche in Silent Hill seeming more obviously humanoid than many of the town’s previous victims’. In addition to dreading judgment by those he esteems, he internalizes his fears of strangers and authority figures, especially those encountered in his incarceration.

Although he is easily frightened, he usually suppresses his fears and soldiers on until his life is threatened, and even then, he would rather take charge of the situation by fighting or fleeing than sit down and take whatever harm is intended for him.

As far as he’s concerned, however, the person who has done him the most harm is himself. Even the creature he despises most in his Silent Hill is a thinly veiled mirror of Murphy. He blames himself for being unable to protect his son Charlie from being kidnapped and murdered, and for the assault on and death of his only positive authority figure in prison, and he desperately yearns for the forgiveness and affection of the ex-wife he estranged when he got himself arrested.

Murphy’s penchants for self-doubt and -destruction likely stem from an internal struggle of what’s right and what’s wrong. His moral behavior may be “live and let live” one moment and “an eye for an eye” the next, depending on the situation. Even prior to his stint in prison, he participated in morally grey, if not criminal, activities, though he claims to never have injured a person who didn’t deserve it. He seems to strive to do what is right, but his emotions can get the better of him in some instances, and he often tries to justify quite extreme solutions. This is especially prevalent in his role as Patrick Napier’s killer.

At the time leading up to the confrontation, ending the life of his son’s murderer was the only thing that mattered to him, and he felt he was the only one who could bring about real justice. He was more than willing to sink himself into debt with the corrupt corrections officer George Sewell in order to get the alone time with Napier needed to kill him.

After the fact, however, perhaps especially after Sewell’s attack on Frank Coleridge in which Murphy is implicated, he shows a tremendous amount of guilt. He remarks that it doesn’t even matter that he killed Napier, as it didn’t bring Charlie back; this is one way he realizes and acknowledges that although he excused the act as seeking justice at the time, in the end it was simply vengeance. This quest for revenge not only made him a murderer too, and therefore no better of a man, it also resulted in Frank’s death, for which he readily accepts responsibility despite never harming Frank with his own hands.

Having essentially nothing left and being a wanted criminal, Murphy seems primarily motivated to simply survive, although even this drive has its limits. When trapped or targeted by others with no options or escape left, he accepts his fate and impending death with little argument. However, he will continue moving forward as long as there is an opportunity to do so, even if he had previously given up hope.

[Murphy is careful to avoid putting out video feed; even in a strange place, he shouldn’t be plastering his face across the network. Who knows who’d be watching?

His voice is tired and a little agitated, but for the most part, he keeps it level.]

I don’t know whose idea of a joke this is, but I get it. I do. I’ve already played this game. The big accident, the waking up in a strange town, the weird creatures. The whole song and dance.

Look, it seems nice here. It really does. But if whoever’s in charge can just… cut it out, that’d be great. And I know you’re listening. You always are.

I'm done with being trapped against my will. I did my time. I don’t belong here. Let me go home.
