Personality: Diana is a self-confessed ‘bad girl’ often described by others as a bitch due to her ‘mean streak of sarcasm’ and wit leading to her habit of taunting and teasing others mostly for her own amusement. Plus, she's a teenager, so she can be foul-mouthed and lewd when she wants.
Diana is a survivor, through and through. She will always find a way to survive, be it simple high school survival or surviving a fallout. Diana’s preferred method is to put herself in a position of power, preferably through manipulation. While never in direct power herself she will become close to or blackmail those who have power and the ability to protect her to ensure her own safety as well as any other advantages this gains her. She is a beautiful, strong willed and confident individual, causing others to be intimidated and wither away from confrontation with her or not have the ability to stand up to her. Sneaky and manipulative, she usually knows exactly what to say to get people to do what she wants. She can twist almost any situation and use it to her advantage, leading her to be viewed as selfish and does not worry about how her actions will affect other people, she's aware of this and seems to have accepted this as part of herself.
Diana is a deceptive person who often lies to and betrays others, even when she does something that could be considered a 'good thing', her motivation is typically self serving, but Diana does not seem to be ashamed that she often does bad things, as mentioned before, she regularly calls herself a “bad girl” and admits that she is not a nice person. This is most likely due to the fact that however 'bad' her intentions, her actions are always justified from her point of view. Her saving grace is that she often tries to persuade or stop Caine from doing truly twisted deeds and she wants to change him.
In the first book Diana, who was well fed and still beautiful, was seen as a mysterious beauty who would hold your hand, at least to the Perdido Beach kids. The Coates kids knew her for what she was; a cruel, condescending, manipulative girl and Caine's loyal girlfriend. She stood by and allowed Caine to encased the hands of uncooperative mutants in cement which made alot of kids hold resentment towards her, something which Diana has always been pretty accepting of. At the end of the first book her true feelings for Caine are revealed when she chooses him over warm food, shelter and a Drake-free life.
She hates Drake and regularly taunts him, despite how incredibly outmatched by him in strength she is. He's beaten, tortured and nearly killed her so she's understandably scared of him, still, Diana responds to him with sarcasm and snide comments, most likely half due to her recent resignation towards death but mostly because it humanizes her opponent, he's no longer a monster, just another teen she's frustrated to the point of anger with her attitude.
Although Diana is able to take criticism about her ways and brushes off comments easily, recent events have caused her regret and she has begun to despise herself. During the FAYZ Diana has witnessed plagues, power struggles resulting in all out war, death, suicide, starvation, cannibalism, murder, torture and many other things hidden away in the dark corners of human nature. And all participants were under the age of 16. During all this Diana continued to make the best of her situation and protect herself, even after facing extreme fear and near death from injuries, but when she was forced herself to cannibalize the corpse of an ally to stay alive she realized the cost of living in such a harsh reality. Horrified by what the FAYZ has warped her into becoming, she tried to change herself for the better and attempted to refuse to take part in events of the FAYZ but that was much more easily said than done.
Regardless of this, even though she is now trying to choose the more morally right paths, Diana is still maintains her cool, abrasive attitude towards others because like any other human (especially the survivors of FAYZ), Diana knows fear well and how easily such things and other weakness can quickly become your downfall. She can still act selfishly and has a very dark sense of humour, but Diana is surprising loyal, sticking by Caine despite some of the heinous crimes he committed, only leaving once he ignored her ultimatum for him to leave the other children alone and then returning to him in very end and honouring his final wish. She's more than aware of how bad her actions were or how she may appear to others and she's accepted this. While she does hold remorse for certain events she's never made an effort to defend her actions, her mentally being that if she can justify it to herself, there's no need in convincing others. This is why she projects her 'bitchy' attitude, as it allows a blanket excuse for her behaviour and if everyone is always assuming the worst then everyone happy to let her slide by so long as she doesn't cause trouble.
Despite other views of her and her views of herself, Diana can develop soft spots for people, one example being Sam, most likely because even though he was flawed and acted as human as the rest of the kids in the FAYZ, Sam was still always 'the good guy' who did 'the right thing', even letting Diana follow him to the lake when she'd left Caine, despite her being pretty adamant for a lot of the previous books that none of the Perdido Beach kids would accept her.
Diana is emotionally and psychologically damaged because of FAYZ, though it’s hard to get her to show it, if she were to get close to a certain individual, she may eventually begin to reveal the true impact this has all had on her, however, due to a harsh betrayal she’s endured and after witnessing humanity’s true nature first hand, Diana finds it hard to trust. She knows well how others can easily lie and turn on each other and so prefers to judge others on the actions they perform rather than the promises they spit out.
Diana also has a surprising protective streak in her, she wishes she was better than the person she believes herself to be. She's just witnessed her love and her child destroy each other with no capacity to change anything about it. She's always had to depend on others and has, in her eyes, failed to truly protect anyone she cares for.
Realistically, Diana was a young girl in a horrific situation who's honestly lucky to be alive, but her own views on the subject are different. Diana had to eat the flesh of another kid to survive, she saved Drake from dying by sawing off his burnt arm, only for him to become one of the worst monsters the kids ever faced. She tried to kill the person she loved just to stop them also turning into a monster. It took nearly killing herself to save one small group of children and that's because when she'd tried to use words she'd failed. She took the blame for Penny's injury, she tried to keep Penny alive and nurse her for the girl to become one of her tormentors. She befriends one of the younger children, just for him to be threatened if she'd didn't do as Drake commanded. Her child was brought into the world unnaturally and despite Diana's best efforts, was corrupted. Her child looked into her mind and saw the worst of its mother. It became a monster. She tried to warn the kids about what was coming and still so many died. She even tried to offer herself as a body for a more powerful being to destroy her own daughter but instead they took her lover. And then she watched the two of them burn each other to ashes.
She wants so desperately to be able to look after someone, to care for them, protect them. Not for any external praise, but her own peace of mind, her own redemption. She's confessed to Caine that she doesn't know how she'll ever face God or even her own future children for the things she's done. The irony is that Diana has actually saved multiple lives across the FAYZ, it's just that she either views these as results of her own selfish whims or she genuinely never stopped to take note of them. She believes her own facade so well that she fails to view herself as the kind and caring person she actually can be and now wishes she was more like that.
