TMs / HMs

WHAT ARE TMs/HMs?

TMs, which stands for Technical Machine, are a way to teach Pokemon a move they do not naturally learn. It's a way to teach your pokemon a move your opponents might not be expecting and to give them even more way to win! They have the appearance of small disks which can be inserted in a trainer's pokegear from where the data is transmitted to the pokemon in question.

Curious how that works exactly? So are we! Unfortunately, Silph Co. is rather tight-lipped about the whole situation.

HMs, which stands for Hidden Machine, function in much the same way TMs do, but generally these moves are a little more complex and can also help you while travelling, like Fly! If you are a trainer, HMs generally require certain badges before they can be used so do make sure to check that!

CAN TMs/HMs BE REUSED OR ARE THEY SINGLE-USE?

Generally speaking, TMs are single-use items. They teach one move to one pokemon, before becoming inactive. So please make sure you are absolutely certain to which pokemon you want to teach a certain TM. There is no way to undo the process and get back the TM if you change your mind.

HMs on the other hand, are multi-use items and can be used again and again. So don't hesitate to teach all your pokemon the move surf! Why not? You won't run out.

There is one exception to this -- sometimes, TMs can be multi-use as well. However, these are generally only given out as special awards and cannot be purchased in stores, nor can they be found while exploring.

HOW CAN MY CHARACTER ACQUIRE TMs/HMs?

The only way to obtain HMs is to defeat certain gym leaders who will give them out as a prize. While you can also get some TMs this way, and if you are very lucky, you might find one in the tall grass once in a while, the most sure way of obtaining TMs in Victory Road is through the Pokemarts and Department stores. In every city, the local Pokemart will sell a small, but unique selection of TMs, while the Department store has a huge collection for you to choose from.

Please keep in mind that while the large Department stores in Goldenrod City and Celadon City have fully adapted to also offering online shopping options for people who do not live nearby, the various Pokemarts in smaller towns don't offer this option. So if you want a TM from Cherrygrove City, you will actually have to travel there to get it!

Wondering which TMs can be found where? Look no further!

HOLD ON, WHAT ARE STANDARD AND SEASONAL TMs?

Standard TMs are the TMs that are always on offer. Whether summer or winter, Monday or Friday, if you go to Cherrygrove City, you'll be able to buy a Charm TM.

However, over the years, Silph co. has developed a massive amount of TMs; so many, in fact, that many were never even stocked in stores and extremely hard to get a hold of. But now the department stores in Goldenrod City an Celadon City have put something into action that will change that -- Seasonal TMs.

In essence, in addition to the standard TMs, which are always available, the department stores in Goldenrod City and Celadon City will also offer a selection of forty TMs that will change every three months! On the First of March, June, September and December a whole new selection of TMs will be revealed! So if that one TM you've been searching for isn't for sale today, try checking back in a few months and perhaps it will be. But at the same time, if you see a TM you are interested in, make sure to buy it before it becomes unavailable! Because you might need to wait a long time before it appears again.
