Extended FAQ: About Your Pokémon (to edit)

Jump to: General Questions | Specific Pokemon | Special Evolutions

GENERAL QUESTIONS:
Can Pokemon have unusual markings?
Yes! They can have anything ranging from battle scars and small spots and discoloration to being slightly bigger or smaller than average or having small, differentiating quirks. Generally speaking they should still be recognizably a member of their species.

Are pokemon capable of human speech?
Yes. With a few stipulations:

   1. It'd take at least a year before they were able to communicate with any accuracy, possibly more if the effort wasn't the pokemon's idea initially. And that's with daily voice training; it would be make months before they could make a sound that wasn't in their normal repertoire (name + natural noises).

   2. Some pokemon cannot learn to vocalize as humans can. The more a Pokemon's cries sound like actual animal noises, the more difficult it would be for said pokemon to speak.

   3. Pokemon are limited to the kinds of sounds/moras they can naturally produce; so for example, a pikachu would have huge difficulty producing s or o. The accent would be incredibly thick for quite some time. It would take a lot more effort than daily tongue twisters to train them into speaking further.

If your character is in route for long enough, and has the motivation? Nothing's stopping you. But really, teaching them sign language or writing is so much less painful.

What about Water types on land?
Most water types can live outside of water for long periods of time. Please see Moves for more information. Magikarps are just special.

If a trainer were to have a concealed pokemon hiding on their person and uses an attack on command while pretending it's the trainer performing the move, would the local law enforcement have any problem with this?
It depends on the context. If not used maliciously and only done to earn money, law enforcement will just tell you to knock it off or be careful, but if it's just done for kicks every once in a while or to show friends, they'll leave it be. If it's done just to train in the grass, they won't step in.

SPECIFIC POKEMON:
Ditto: Ditto can be used to transform into disguises like masks or awkwardly breathing totally-a-ghost blankets. Whether or not the ditto is skilled enough to make a very convincing impression depends on the ditto themselves and their training.

Kangaskhan: A Kangaskhan is born with a baby in its pouch!

Rotoms: Rotoms can access any appliance form in order to transform. It will essentially possess the appliance and carry it about with him. That toaster over there? That's now your Rotom. Have fun with that. However, Rotoms still have the ability to chance back into their original forms and possess other appliances.

Vivillon: Given the many natures of their colors, players can choose which coloring they'd prefer for their Vivillon.

Zorua/Zoruark: Regarding illusions, their abilities to copy things that aren't in Route. They won't work tangibly, but they can look mighty convincing.

SPECIAL EVOLUTIONS:
For the most part, pokemon in Victory Road evolve in the same way as they do in the games.

(This includes evolutionary items - for those, please see the Items page! Pokemon that require trading with an item will still require trading - but it need not be official/permanent, just another trainer taking care of them for a bit will work.)

However, sometimes that is not possible, because a specific location or mechanic is not available in Victory Road. For these pokemon, we have introduced slightly altered evolutionary methods, which can all be found here.

If a pokemon is not listed here, you can assume it evolves the same way as it does in the games. Should these evolutionary methods involve meeting requirements that are a little more vague (such as 'high friendship' or 'high beauty' or 'land three critical hits'), it means its entirely up to you as a player to decide when these requirements have been met for your character and their pokemon. All we ask is to keep it reasonable. A friendship needs time to build and a Feebas won't instantly feel beautiful; this is something that'll take several weeks to achieve.

Patterned Magikarp

Gyarados
Patterned Magikarp evolves into Gyarados starting at level 20. It is possible for a Gyarados that evolved from a Patterned Magikarp to retain some of its previous pattern on a minority of their body. Roughly speaking, 80% of them would still look similar to a regular Gyarados, but 20% of their body could differ. It wouldn't be possible for a pink Magikarp to evolve into a pink Gyarados, but it could be possible for the resulting Gyarados to have a patch of pink scales or to have an overall slightly more pinkish sheen to their body.

Patterned Magikarp cannot be found in the wild, but they can be purchased from a breeder on the Sevii Islands
