Extended FAQ: About Your Pokémon

Jump to: General Questions | Special Evolutions| Specific Pokemon Minutiae

GENERAL QUESTIONS:

Can Pokemon have unusual markings?
Yes! They can have anything ranging from battle scars and small spots and discoloration to being bigger or smaller than average or having small, differentiating quirks. Generally speaking they should still be recognizably a member of their species, and not so different that they could be mistaken for a shiny Pokemon or other special variation.

Are Water types able to survive on land?
Most Water types are fine outside of water for long periods of time. If they are based on a species that can be found on land (like a Seel) or can otherwise be reasonably argued (like Gyarados, which is also a Flying type and dragon-esque), they are fine on land indefinitely.

Outright fish-like Pokémon are generally awkward and have great difficulty moving outside of a body of water - they don’t get to float - but do not otherwise have issues.

Magikarps are just special.

Can Psychic types use telepathy?
Yes! They do not need a specific ability or move - this is a primary form of communication for Psychic types. However, with young and new Pokémon, speech will be a little less 'clear' until they've matured a little. (You may also choose to have it remain unclear/uniquely inhuman.)

What happens if a Pokemon doesn’t evolve before level 100 - is it stuck now?
In Victory Road, levels are just a way to measure how much of their potential a Pokemon has achieved, so there is no ‘cut off’ for when a Pokemon can evolve. If your Sandile has been level 100 for two years but now wants to evolve (maybe it just wants to be taller?), then it can happen!

SPECIAL EVOLUTIONS:
For the most part, pokemon in Victory Road evolve in the same way as they do in the games.

This includes evolutionary items - for those, please see the Items page - and trades - though a trade need not be official/permanent, just another trainer taking care of a Pokemon for a bit will work.

However, in some cases, a specific location or mechanic is not available in Victory Road. For these Pokemon, we have introduced slightly altered evolutionary methods, which can all be found here.

If a pokemon is not listed here, you can assume it evolves the same way as it does in the games. Should these evolutionary methods involve meeting requirements that are a little more vague (such as 'high friendship' or 'high beauty' or 'land three critical hits'), it means it’s entirely up to you as a player to decide when these requirements have been met. All we ask is to keep it reasonable. A friendship needs time to build and a Feebas won't instantly feel beautiful; this is something that'll take a while to achieve.

Kanto Region

Patterned Magikarp

Gyarados
Patterned Magikarp evolves into Gyarados starting at level 20. It is possible for a Gyarados that evolved from a Patterned Magikarp to retain some of its previous pattern on a minority of their body. Roughly speaking, 80% of them would still look similar to a regular Gyarados, but 20% of their body could differ. It wouldn't be possible for a pink Magikarp to evolve into a pink Gyarados, but it could be possible for the resulting Gyarados to have a patch of pink scales or to have an overall slightly more pinkish sheen to their body.

Patterned Magikarp cannot be found in the wild, but they can be purchased from a breeder on the Sevii Islands.

Kalos Region

Inkay

Malamar
Inkay evolves into Malamar after it is level 30 by using an Inkay Bottle, which can be purchased from the department stores in Goldenrod and Celadon. A trainer must stuff their Inkay into the bottle, cork it, and spin the corked bottle upside down several times. Their Malamar will spray out of the bottle once it is uncorked - better stand back!

Alola Region
All Pokemon that start with a “standard” form but have an Alolan evolution evolve into it if they meet the appropriate conditions while on the Sevii islands.
(E.g. Cubone into Alolan Marowak, Exeggcute into Alolan Exeggutor, etc)

Rockruff

Lycanroc (Dusk Form)
Rockruff can evolve into Lycanroc (Dusk Form) if it has the "Own Tempo" ability. Rockruffs with this ability cannot be found in the wild--they must either be bred from a Lycanroc with the ability, or use an ability candy.

Galar Region

Koffing

Weezing (Galar form)
Koffing evolves into Weezing (Galar form) in Celadon City
at level 35 or higher.

Mime Jr.

Mr Mime (Galar Form)
Mime Jr evolves into Mr Mime (Galar form) by levelling
up during rainy weather.

Yamask (Galar form)

Runerigus
Yamask (Galar form) evolves into Runerigus in the Ruins of Alph after taking significant damage without fainting.

Hisui Region
The three Hisuian starters’ middle stages (Dartrix, Dewott, Quilava) evolve into the Hisuian version of their final evolution by meeting the level conditions while in an Old Ball. Old Balls can be purchased from Kurt in Azalea Town.

All other Pokemon that start with a “standard” form but have a Hisuian evolution evolve into it if they meet the appropriate conditions while in mountainous terrain (ex: Mt. Moon), unless noted otherwise below.
(e.g. Petilil into Hisuian Lilligant, Rufflet into Hisuian Braviary, etc)

Stantler

Wyrdeer
Stantler evolves into Wyrdeer after using Psyshield Bash at least twenty times.

Qwilfish (Hisui Form)

Overqwil
Qwilfish (Hisui Form) evolves into Overqwil after using Barb Barrage at least twenty times.

Goomy

Sliggoo (Hisui Form)
Goomy evolves into Sliggoo (Hisui Form) by leveling up to level 40 in the Dragon's Den. Only Sliggoo (Hisui Form) can evolve into Goodra (Hisui form)

Growlithe (Hisui Form)

Arcanine (Hisui Form)
Growlithe (Hisui Form) evolves into Arcanine (Hisui Form) after being exposed to a Fire Stone in mountainous terrain. (For example, Mt Moon, Mt Silver). If exposed to a Fire stone elsewhere, it will not evolve.

Paldea Region
All Pokemon that evolve in the games by walking 1000 steps using the Let's Go feature will evolve in VR by traveling on foot with them for seven days. The time does not have to be consecutive and can be split up as you see fit.

Finizen

Palafin
Finizen evolves into Palafin by leveling up to lvl 38 with a high friendship level. A union circle is not needed.

Gimmighoul

Gholdengo
Gimmighoul evolves into Gholdengo by collecting 999 Gimmighoul Coins. Gimmighoul coins can be collected by defeating wild Gimmighouls (in either Chest or Roaming form) for their coins, or hunting them down in antique shops and flea markets! Either way, it’ll take awhile.

Bisharp

Kingambit
Bisharp evolves into Kingambit after defeating three Bisharp while holding a Leader's Crest. The item can be purchased in Fuchsia City.

SPECIFIC POKEMON MINUTIAE:
What’s the difference between DITTO’s transformations and ZOROARK’s illusions?
When Dittos transform, they are physically shapeshifting their bodies! This means that they can turn into other Pokemon, humans, or even objects (though whether or not they’re skilled enough to do so convincingly depends on the individual Ditto.)

Zorua/Zoroark's illusions, on the other hand, are usually extremely convincing, but superficial, like a magical glamour. No matter how different the Zoroark looks, its body is still exactly the same underneath!

Does KANGASKHAN always have a baby in its pouch? Does the baby ever grow up?
A Kangaskhan hatched by a trainer is born with a baby in its pouch! Yeah, it’s weird. Don’t think about it too hard.

If you want your character’s Kangaskhan’s baby to eventually grow up into an adult Kangaskhan with a baby of its own, we won’t stop you. Just don’t use this as an excuse to generate exponential quantities of Kangaskhans.

Can ROTOMS possess appliances other than the ones they have official forms for?
Rotoms can access any appliance form in order to transform. It will essentially possess the appliance and carry it about with him. That toaster over there? That's now your Rotom. Have fun with that.

However, for mechanics purposes, only the canon forms’ type combinations (Electric/Grass, Electric/Flying, Electric/Water, Electric/Ice, and Electric/Fire) are applicable, and you may pick whichever one makes the most sense for the type of appliance your Rotom is inhabiting (ie; Electric/Grass for a leafblower).

A Rotom can return to its original form at any time simply by leaving the appliance it’s possessing.

For Pokemon with many different forms like VIVILLON, how can my character obtain the color(s) I want?
The color of the Vivillon your character catches is up to you!
