Original Character Background:

The world of Nevus is one of two planets that occupy the same orbit. The smaller of the two, Nevus is a vibrant world home to six super nations. With ancient history seeped in magic and technology, inhabited by beings called Nevusians, masters of both magic and technology. Long-lived, arrogant and pious, the Nevusians were the undisputed masters of the world, pushing aside lesser races to scattered pocket communities through-out the known world. The Nevusians enjoyed several millennium of direct interaction with their ten Goddesses, the masters of the material world that hold the world together in its current form, sending out chosen priests to tend to the great Mother Tree, Pankosmia. Pankosmia is said to be the throne of the world, and a bridge to spirit world. After all these millennia, the Nevusians descended into civil war, turning Pankosmia's home region into a land of eternal winter, and eventually leading to the near death of Pankosmia itself. After the defeat and imprisonment of a traiterous priest who started the war, the Nevusians lost their longevity, prowess with magic and intellectual innovation. Within a few hundred years, each new generation changed, becoming a new race of humans, then the Nevusians went extinct.

A dark age reigned over the world as the three ancient kingdoms collapsed, leaving the new race of humans to struggle and find a new way of life. Many people migrated out of the now snowy wasteland to find new settlements in the ruins of the fallen kingdoms. Those loyal to the now dormant mother tree remained. New generations of Pankosmia's caretakers evolved to survive and thrive in cold, harsh conditions. As new nations began to emerge from the ruins of the old, explorers set out to find new continents and new civilizations. An event occurred within Pankosmia to spark a renaissance, when the tree suddenly loosed a burst of mana, with the image of the prime Goddess visible for miles. This event emboldened the people and hastened the growth of new nations world-wide. Before long, the world was blanketed by six super nations, vastly different from each other, but united by a common ancestry. These six nations are: Granysea, Regnum Nivibus, Firland, Pastoria, Aldaeas and Crezanti. The largest among them is Firland, a arid country, once green with life now withered and arid thanks to the over-use of the newly re-discovered manatechnology, and with influence across the world, coming into prominence through military might and scientific innovation. Known for causing the most famous rivalries between itself, and the eternal snowy Regnum Nivibus. Having conquered Nivibus before to harvest the power emanating from Pankosmia, the Firlanders were driven out by a revolt as if orchestrated by the Goddesses themselves.

With the threat of a world war prevailing between the heated rivalries between fire and ice, a new massive war erupted between the two nations, though it quickly ended with a Nivian victory. It was in a few short years following the war that a new religion emerged with a promise to replace everything that could cause war and opression. The new Erulean Way quickly takes root and spreads, but the idea of peace seems to come at a very high price.

History
Born on March 3rd, 1111 in the Age of Awakening, Anastasia is the first born and only child of the current Nivian monarchs. Princess of all Regnum Nivibus and heiress to the throne of the kingdom. She is the second known human to possess pure destruction magic, the force once belonging to the long-gone ancient civilizations. She is a sheltered girl who was raised by her mother and resident maids. Her interaction with so many women of common birth molded Anastasia into a polite young lady with knowledge of all her nation's languages, princess ettiquete and common lifestyles. However, she had little to no interaction with males, resulting in her being very timid around them. With heavy persuasion, Anastasia was introduced to a rookie knight by the name of Noah, for her to learn how to interact with male subjects and lead them, while Noah learns discipline and humility. Life was good for the little Princess as she plays in her garden full of bunnies, try on clothes from other nations, sleeping, and simply being pampered in her days of rest at home in the castle in the central district, and being schooled in the art of ettiquete, fencing, law, order, military, economics and diplomacy for the rest of the year in the city's Great Cathedral in the cathedral district.

Anastasia admired the knights, especially her warrior-king of a father. The hero of the Second Pankosmian War, with his tactical brilliance and the might of magic, the elemental force lost for hundreds of thousands of years, drove back the invading Firlandic Imperial Army and saved their nation. She loved the idea of these brave men fighting to protect their homes and loved ones. But Anastasia never really got to know her father. Always busy leading the nation and training troops, only ever seeing him on rather rare occasions. In 1121 in the Age of Awakening, 10 year old Anastasia sees her father and tells her about it being time for her to take on new responsibilities. She got to accompany her father to the other districts of the city, and even visit other provinces in the kingdom. During this time, her father made it official for the rookie knight, Noah, to be her retainer now that his initial training is complete.

It was business as usual for Anastasia. At 12 years old, her mind was opening to the wonders of the world and longed to explore and see it all for herself. She got her wish when she was asked by her father to visit the Market District and collect a report from the local marshal. She was escorted by her retainer and a couple castle guards, and arrived at the Market District to find the massive outdoor market nearly deserted. Her curious nature drove her to wander off and explore before her task was complete.

Little did she know that a ancient threat stalked the shadowy corners of the once thriving market, and it lunged out at her. It was the frozen flesh of a ancient human, risen back to life by the mana-saturated snow. Before the hideous undead could sink its teeth into Anastasia, she was rescued by a regal fighter who introduced himself as Albert Ross. Albert further charmed his way to Anastasia's good graces by speaking of her beauty and convinced her to meet some of his colleagues, Erulean priests who want to establish a small church. Whether it was foolishness, or bravery she inherited from her father, she agreed, finished her task in the district, survived a scolding from her parents, and snuck out of the castle in the evening to meet these priests.

In the outskirts of Archangel, she met three dark-robbed monks, but Albert was nowhere to be found. One of the monks approached and spoke to her. They called her, "The Princess of Destruction," and drew daggers. Confused and frightened, realizing now the horrible mistake she made, she tried to run back to the city, but what caught. In unison, the monks chanted, "Praise be he, the one true God-King!" Before they went in for the kill, Anastasia's new retainer, Noah, arrived in time to fight them off. Nearly dying twice in one day was taking an emotional toll on the girl, but she was still forcing herself to put on a strong face, as a proper princess should. Her father was notified the next morning.

For wandering off twice and nearly getting killed both times, Anastasia was locked away in her bedroom and kept under heavy guard. The King will investigate the appearence of undead and the group that would assassinate a harmless girl. Anastasia would hardly ever see freedom again for the next couple of months as she is often visited by Pankosminite priestesses to help her cope with the stresses of what she endured. Scouts report that a huge legion of undead has emerged and was closing in on Archangel, overrunning provinces and their capitals. Anastasia was released from her room and loaded up onto a carriage with her retainer and a small group of knights. As soon as an opening was found, she escaped north, leaving behind a home that would soon be conquered. She does not know what became of her parents whom stayed behind to buy her time. Her only option is to continue north to friendly Granysea, but her young mind couldn't yet fathom that her nation was just the first to fall in the Erulean Way Uprising.

Personality:

Anastasia is a old-fashioned girly-girl. Raised to prefer elegant attire in the form of dresses and gowns. She adores dressing up, reading fairy tales, and playing with snow bunnies or strategy games. She is gentle and considerate, and equal amounts curious. She will often watch the maids, chefs and the guards from afar, watching how they go about day-to-day jobs and wondering what life would be like in their shoes. Because of influence from both high and low borne, she is not spoiled or terribly vain. She is vain to the extent that she thinks she is cuter and prettier than other girls, but isn't so rude as to make her beliefs known.

Anastasia takes after her father in a variety of ways. She is logical and can be stubborn and somewhat fearless enough to wander off on her own. She is naive and unenlightened to the true horrors of the world, which does explain her fearlessness. She can be quite timid around boys, but is very comfortable around other girls. While it normally takes a while for her to warm up to boys, she is easily charmed and a simple cute gift is enough for her to drop her guard and trust a stranger to a certain point. She believes in her duty as a Princess to put on a strong facade and will very rarely reveal her inner pain from past traumatic

experiences. As a result of bottling her emotions, she is rarely seen smiling or crying. Her race of people, the Nivians, have evolved and adapted for harsh climates, so Anastasia has some personality quirks that others might find either endearing or weird. Anastasia's instincts often make her attracted to anything warm, such as blankets, low fires or warm hugs. Over all, Anastasia can be imaginative and sensitive. Compassionate and kind. Selfless and unworldly. Intuitive and sympathetic. However, she has moments where she may fail at any of the former, especially when she gets emotionally conflicted. So on the dark side, she can be an escapist and idealistic. Secretive and vague. Weak-willed and easily led.

Strengths:
+Logical and mature for her age.
+Educated. She is quite knowledgable about the basics.
+Prim and proper.
+Cares about the well-being of people.
+Instincts help her identify threats quicker.
+High tolerance to cold weather.
+Curious and loves to learn.
+Moderate training in fencing.
+Wide assortment of destructive elemental magics. Naturally gifted with Water, Ice and Dark magic

Weaknesses:
-Poor tolerance to hot weather, worse so in direct sunlight on summer days. Needs a constant supply of water to avoid overheating.
-Light weight. Easy to push around or carry off.
-Instincts don't protect her from human nature. She can't identify when a person is a threat.
-Still a child and easily fooled.
-Past stressful experiences leave her insecure and with bottled emotions.
-Destruction magic drains her quickly. Fire, Thunder and Light magic consumes far more stamina.
-Often fails to consider the feelings of the people who care about her well-being.
-Sheltered and knows little about the actual world.

Anastasia wasn't sure how she got here. The land feels new and familiar at the same time. Is it because of the grass? The rivers? The mountains? The trees? Seeing so much green was still a rather new experience for her, as her country was always blanketed with snow. The young girl sat alone in the shade of one such tree, staring up at the rolling clouds, quietly contemplating her situation. Being near a a stream, it was calming, so she can think about what she's going to do. Should she really listen to the lady who may as well have thrown her out of a rather cozy home? This would be an ideal chance to explore the world as much as she pleases, but what about the home she left behind? Everything that is happening now seems so surreal from the disaster after disaster she endured. But can you really blame a girl for being cautious and on edge? What reason does she have to believe she is safe now? This bright and charming world feels like nothing more than a dream.

Anastasia's gaze drifted down to the nearby stream, where the most adorable critter was playing happily in the water, splashing around without a care in the world. If this world was a dream, she hopes she doesn't wake up from it too soon. The little sea lion noticed her watching, and with a big, bright smile, it began to clap excitedly. It climbed out of the water and hopped it's way over to her. She forced a little smile in response to the sea lion coming up to greet her and she reached out to gently tap it on it's large, pink nose with her index finger.

"...What do you think?"
It tilted it's head for a second, then barked a reply.
"Pop, pop!"

She sighs half contentedly. "No, I suppose you or I would know not what to do. I feel like the further I go, the further away I go from my real home. I do not want to go further away... I want to go home... To my mom and dad..."

Anastasia is trying to remain strong. As a Princess, she is obligated to be strong, but she is well aware that she is powerless. She begins to gently pet the little sea lion and it carefully climbs into her lap to get comfortable. This was an effort to convince not only the critter, but herself that everything was going to be all right. But deep down, she wasn't so sure.

She was just an ordinary girl with no magical powers now. Just her, and a playful sea lion. The sea lion can see the sadness in her blue eyes, and started to blow bubbles in an effort to cheer her up. She appreciates the effort, and it did help her keep her mind clear of further dark thoughts.

"...I do realize one thing, though. I may not be getting further away from home simply sitting here, but I am also not getting any closer to home. I suppose the only option is to go forth regardless... and see what the world has in store. Will you accompany me, little one?"

Anastasia nudged the critter off her lap as she stood up, drawing an umbrella from the bag she was given. She opened the umbrella and held it over herself. The critter barked and clapped excitedly in response to the girl. It appears to be in agreement. Anastasia leaves the safety of the tree's shade, with the umbrella to help keep the sun off her, and the little sea lion at her side, she started walking down the road to destinations unknown.

A couple of key points missed out in the wiki:
• During a heist she meets Harley Quinn. The two go on a crime spree and end up forming a strong friendship, with Harley becoming the first human Ivy shows true care for since her transformation.

• Black Canary seeks her out and talks her into joining the Birds of Pray. She proves to be an incredibly valuable asset to the team. Even though the team and Ivy clash verbally a lot of the time, she continues to help and protect them in their ventures. Her means of getting information prove invaluable. They end up on many ventures together before Ivy betrays them because she only has 6 months to live.

• Ivy ends up surviving and, after manipulating Clayface into working for her, plays a integral part in the Arkham Wars, which results in the criminals of Gotham taking over for awhile, after which she begins working along side the crime family, Calabrese, headed by Selina, (Catwoman) also a longtime 'friend' of Ivy's.

• Ivy is summoned by the Justice League to help fight a giant meat monster with some heroes, including Swamp Thing. Swamp Thing is eaten but he and Ivy communicate to help destroy the creature. Ivy rescues his skull in the hopes of rejuvenating him.

• Inbetween these events of being an effective villain or hero, Ivy frequently visits Harley to assist in her life, like helping Harley find out who put a hit on her, putting out an ad to form a Harley Quinn fighting squad or fighting off super strong criminal sailors to name a few.
• Ivy takes a job as a legitimate scientist in botany for awhile and uses the access to create her own plant/human hybrid children. She discovers someone stole her research and created another child and that her old mentor (who has almost killed in the past for his own experiments) is trying to kill her. Ivy raises the three girls together, trying to keep them confined but her daughters grow at an accelerated rate and eventually break free. At some typical comic book shenanigans, the girls thanks their mother and leave to form their own lives outside of Gotham.
• Harley and Ivy's relationship has quickly grown romantic and sexual. Recently, she went on a trip to the Bahamas with Harley where they discussed their relationship. Ivy confessed that she was too swamped down with work to move in with Harley and cement their relationship officially, but she still cared deeply for the other girl and would be willing to try later down the line.

Personality: To say that Ivy lacks empathy would be incorrect, Ivy feels a great amount of empathy, just for plant life. Humans, on the other hand, especially adult males, fail to register as little more than pawns to her. Ivy sees most people are cruel, destructive creatures and as such feels little remorse in regards to things such as homicide, especially if it helps her achieve her own goals. However, this does not mean Ivy is emotionless, in fact, she can get very passionate about things, the most obvious being plants but it's been shown that she can also get rather fired up on the subject of feminism and other things.

While not waveringly loyal, Ivy possesses an incredibly strong will to protect, derived from her inability as a child to protect her mother from her father. While this usually manifests itself by protective plant life, her protectiveness extends onto friends and teammates, even those she doesn't particularly care for. Also, Ivy's strong maternal instinct that she usually project onto her plant have begun shifting, as she has recently had a keen interest in having a daughter, either one she has made or 'found'.

Seductive and manipulative, Ivy has many ways of going about getting what she wants. Her confidence knows no bounds and while skilled at cutting remarks, Ivy also enjoys trying to bolster the confidence of those she dubs worth her time. Just because she's one of the most feared villianesses in Gotham does not mean Ivy doesn't like to occasionally kick back and relax, she has a fun side and a good sense of humour so long as she's around people she feels at least somewhat confident with, that is, she can assume what their reaction will be.

Because of this, one would not define Ivy as evil. While she has certainly committed a various amount of crimes, it's not out of any psychopathic desire to harm and kill others. Her biggest weakness would be her obsession with plants, which is not only a trigger for her to commit her most heinous acts, but is the best way to defeat her. Threatening a plant can send Ivy into a fit of rage but also demands her full attention and she will swiftly surrender to ensure the safety of the foliage she works so hard to protect.

So, yes, Ivy is still technically insane due to these tendencies, but she's certainly one of the most socially functional villains of Gotham.

Victory Road Sample: Ivy sat in the garden, once again looking over her book, her own detailed notes littered around rough sketches and plant samples. Nearby by, in a bed of dry moss and grass, two bundles of Exeggcute sit, huddled around much larger, speckled eggs that occasionally shake in the sunlight, some more than others.

Her eyes lift themselves from the pages and instead fix on the furry creature infront of her. Long brown ears twitch and a fluffy tail swishes the summer grass back and forth.

Ivy closes the book and holds it out to her side, where a thick green vine gently takes it and replaces it with a mossy covered rock. The vine's owner, a relaxed looking Ivysaur resting in the cool grass beside Ivy, carefully lays the notebook down and looks to the side where a gathering of younger Grass Pokemon watch with keen interest.

Ivy pays them no heed and instead speaks to the small brown Pokemon. "Alright little one. Are you ready?"

The little Eevee infront of her blinked up with large trusting eyes and wiggles its tail in anticipation, not entirely sure of what was happening but eager to start moving around and get things done. A quick glance at the calm Ivysaur reminds her to keep still.

"Now, I know our last attempt with the Leaf Stone was a bit of a dud. But I've checked the notes and this time I'm sure we'll get results."

The Eevee cocks her head to the side in puzzlement as Ivy slowly brings the stone closer. Again, she looks to the Ivysaur for guidance, who lifts her head and nods it gently. With another excited wiggle of her tail, the Eevee presses her nose against the rock.

The resulting light startles a few of the observing Pokemon, who dash their way across the grass to their older counterparts but still Ivy pays them no attention. She is far too busy and focused.

She places the now useless rock on the ground and reaches her hand back out to touch the waxy leaf that made up the ear of the creature before her.

"Success." She smiles.

"Leafeon!" The creature chirps back.

The story of a not real boy.

Personality:
The first thing you need to know when dealing with Van is that he's pure darkness. He was created when Master Xehanort pulled all of the darkness out of a boy named Ventus and created another being in the process. There is no light within him whatsoever and he doesn't care about others outside of his other half. (Though his form of caring has it's own definition.) Even the Unversed, creatures made from the darkness that consume hearts, come from Vanitas himself. They are what he calls "fledgling emotions under my control" and sends them out to destroy worlds and take them over so they can be warped by darkness. Everything his other half is to the light--goodness, hope, love, joy--he is to the darkness--destruction, pain, suffering, and hate being some of the key components that one would need to make their very own Vanitas at home!

Because of what he is, Vanitas really only has the darkest emotions possible, at least that's what he'd tell you. It's not hard to see, right away, just how twisted he is, getting kick out of screwing with others and causing them physical harm. A part of him also relishes getting hurt himself, thriving on the pain and using it to drive his own rage and hatred further. Honestly, pain is probably one of his favorite things ever because it's what he's always know--it's always been a constant--since the day he was "born". It fascinates him to watch how others react to it and he gets excited over the prospect of causing pain to others. There was only so much he was able to do while he still existed and so, like a small child that's still learning the ways of the world, there's a lot he wants to explore and attempt on his own just because he can.

Vanitas has a little bit of an anger problem as well. See, he really doesn't like when things don't go his way and will get rather violent over it. He'll snap at the drop of a hat and go from taunting someone to beating them to a bloody pulp without batting an eye. Something doesn't go as planned? He flips out and attempts to tear someone to shreds. Someone hurts Ventus that isn't him? He'll smother them with darkness and watch them scream in agony as their heart is ripped from their chest. He doesn't attempt to control his anger, really doesn't know how if we're going to be honest, and seems to just enjoy letting it all out. Because darkness and the emotions associated with it are what make Vanitas who he is, he's even more difficult to deal with during his bouts of rage and hate so it's best to keep away from him or have a good way of subduing him if need be.

[personal profile] bleedingunversed 2017-05-09 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Vanitas is very good at playing the game that is manipulation. He has a way with words and knows exactly how to hit people with them to get them going on a course that fuels what he's trying to accomplish. He doesn't have any issue with lying through his teeth if it means he's going to get his way and is very good at making people question what they believe to be true. (Here's looking at you, Aqua.)

As mentioned above his relationship with Ventus is a strange one and it could be argued that Vanitas actually cares about the other young man. That care is actually a twisted sort of fascination and obsession with his other half, Vanitas wanting nothing more than to re-merge with Ventus now that they are both strong enough so that they can form the X-Blade and allow darkness to consume everything. He doesn't like when others hurt Ventus because that's pain that he should be inflicting on the other and it comes off as somewhat protective the way he makes sure the other doesn't get too harmed over the course of his journey. In reality Vanitas is simply making sure that the other is properly herded to where he needs to go in order for their purpose to be fulfilled in the end. If there's anything else to these emotions, Vanitas doesn't realize it; doesn't understand them. He just knows that his end goal is to become one with Ventus again and he's willing to do whatever necessary to accomplish that.

Ultimately Vanitas has his own agenda. He plays the role of a good little puppet very well, using Xehanort's plans to fuel his own goals and help him get where he needs to be. He doesn't really care about what the old man wants and would much rather worry about his own goal--to become one with Ventus again. As he is right now, Vanitas is one half of a whole and it shows with how one track he is with his emotions. He's well aware that dark cannot exist without the light and is more than willing to give up his own sense of self if it means becoming a whole person once again. (As shown in game when he does merge with Ventus, Vanitas is the dominant personality so he wouldn't really be losing everything; just taking on some traits that his other half is bringing to the table.)

Golden eyes narrowed in disgust as, from his perch on the top of a building in the middle of Radiant Garden, he watched two young boys playing with Ventus. Despite everything that was going on his other half seemed to be having a good time, able to put aside his worries and fears in favor of being friendly with the other two.

It was disgusting. A waste of time. A complete waste of time.

Vanitas scoffed lightly and let himself flop backwards, arms tucked behind his head as he stared up at the sky.

"Idiot," he muttered and a faint sound from a few feet away had him turning his head to stare at the creature responsible. One of his Floods was hovering near by looking torn between coming closer and fleeing. All of his creatures knew what his temper was like and yet here this little thing was wanting to be near him.

Moving one of his arms and holding his hand out, Vanitas watched blankly as the Flood shifted closer, twitching as it went, pausing with each step before it finally reached the young man's outstretched hand. Just before it could touch it Vanitas struck, grabbing the little thing by the neck and lifting it up, holding it over his head. He watched as the flood squirmed and struggled and it got a grin out of the young man, a twisted delight on his face at the other's plight.

"You're useless, you know that?" he drawled before he promptly tossed the creature away and over the side of the building. A heavy sigh escaped Vanitas as he sat himself up again, slowly climbing to his feet just in time to see Ventus laughing about something the red head had said. His amusement at the pain he'd caused his Flood disappeared as he frowned, eyes narrowing again. "...You're useless, too." The words were clipped; sharp as he practically spat them out, swiftly turning away to move across the rooftops again.

Soon. Soon he wouldn't have to waste time watching Ventus like this.

Character
Name: Historia Reiss ("Krista Lenz")
Series: Attack on Titan
Timeline: Episode 31; before the Big Reveal
Canon Resource Links: Historia @ AoT Wiki!

Personality: Angel. Goddess. A+ Wife Material. You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone in the 104th Trainee Corps who doesn't think Krista Lenz is at least one of these things. It's all very nice and all, except... well. Historia Reiss isn't exactly that.

That isn't to say that Historia is a bad person, oh no! She truly is a friendly and compassionate girl, shown to put more of a focus on helping her friends and squadmates than pushing herself to the frontlines fighting the titans. She'll ignore her instructor to bring food and water to a friend who was being punished, and avoids battling the Female Titan and the smaller titans she summoned to instead focus on returning Jean's horse so he won't be left helpless. She's incredibly kind to everyone she meets, even to her surly, rude best friend Ymir, and if someone's having problems? She won't push them to work through it, but she'll encourage them however she can.

The point where this gets complicated is that Historia knows people view her as a perfect goddess, and works to make sure they keep seeing her as such. This stems not from her being maliciously selfish or conceited, and more from her cripplingly lonely childhood. Born the bastard daughter of the most powerful man behind the Walls, Historia was shunned by everyone; the other children living at the farm bullied her and threw stones at her, her grandparents wanted nothing to do with her, and her own mother despised her. So deprived of affection was young Historia that she was overjoyed when her mother finally touched her... after shoving Historia so hard the girl's nose bled. So yeah, she'll go through any length to make sure people notice her, that people appreciate her, even if it means continuing to play a role that was more or less forced upon her.

This desperation to be recognized also manifests later as not just her playing up the whole "goddess" thing, but her actively looking for ways to die so that she'll be remembered as some sort of martyr. This is the point where her sort-of act becomes dangerous for others; when one of her squadmates goes down during a blizzard training exercise, Historia insists to be the one to drag him back, despite the chance that both of them will die was pretty high, and she had a stronger, more capable squadmate with her (who she insisted make her way back ahead of her). She's quickly wracked with guilt when Ymir calls her out on this, though, so like everything else, her actions aren't done with any sort of intentional maliciousness.

It should also be noted that while a lot of Historia's negative aspects and personal issues stem from her horrible childhood, it also leads to good as well; she has an incredible soft spot for children, especially those left orphaned by circumstance or the ongoing threat of the titans. So great is this soft spot that she (in the future) founds an orphanage that she has a personal hand in funding and running, pouring the wealth of her crown into it and interacting with the children to the point where her people eventually give her the nickname "The Cattle-rearing Goddess".

Ironically, Ymir is probably the best influence for Historia, despite her rather abrasive personality. She's the one to challenge Historia, to convince her to embrace herself rather than the image she tries to project. And even when Ymir can still come off as a bit of a bully, Historia shows that even if you're her friend, she can give as good as she gets; she'll call Ymir out just as much as Ymir calls her out, and even go so far as to headbutt her when she starts getting pushed around. Historia may be a sweet, easygoing friend, but when she needs call people out on their shit (as Eren also finds out the hard way), she isn't gentle about it, and will damn well put her foot down hard on the problem. She'll do so in an encouraging way, but that will usually involve yelling and insulting you a little.

When it comes down to it, Historia has no idea what to be. Sure, she accepted her true self and true name, but she doesn't know what to do now. She spent so much of her life doing what others wanted her to do that she has no idea who "Historia" really is. Several traumatizing events lead her to a darker, more cynical stage of mind for a time in the future, but she hasn't experienced them just yet. And with those events a bit of a ways off for her, she'll have the chance to discover herself in a much more positive light now.

Having a pokemon that can also turn into a giant hulking beast would match that contrast very nicely.

Two voices can be heard, one of them kind but a bit exasperated as she explains how to work the gear to the other. This goes on for a few moments before the video shifts, and a face finally comes into view.

It's a teenage girl, and... gees, she looks like she's had it rough. Her face and hair are a bit dirty, and it's even worse on what can be seen of her once-white shirt. There are dark circles under her eyes, like she hasn't slept in a while, and she generally looks like she's Seen Some Shit. Still, despite her disheveled and distressed appearance, a hint of awe manages to cross her face.]

This... isn't a dream, is it?

[She's already given up on that explanation. She's too sore for this to be anything other than real life, and she's not sure if that's better or worse. She's no longer atop Wall Rose, can't even see a hint of it... just what in the world is going on?]

B-But dream or not, I need to find my friends! We were able to regroup with others, but... I'm still worried. Please, if anyone can help me... their names are Reiner Braun, Bertold Hoover, Connie Springer, and Ymir. Reiner and Ymir have been hurt, I need to make sure they're okay...!

[Reiner's arm, broken and mauled was bad enough, but... she doesn't think she'll ever get the sight of Ymir fresh out of her titan out of her head; arm and leg missing, a good chunk of her side gone, steam rising in a steady cloud from her injuries... it's enough to make her shudder.

Ah, but she can't dwell on just that now. She got what she needed to out, and there's nothing left to do but wait for a response. In the meantime...]

And, um... these creatures....

[The camera shakes a little; it looks like the girl is sitting down, and almost immediately, a Larvitar crawls into her lap, leaning in veeery close to the gear, despite the girl's protests.]

Hey, stop--!! [There's a bit of a scuffle as she tries to push the Larvitar away from the camera, as the creature does not seem too happy to be pushed around. But she emerges victorious, with only a little bit of growly grumbling from her new companion off-screen.] What is this thing? I-It doesn't look like any lizard I've ever seen...

Name: Edward Elric
Series: Fullmetal Alchemsit '03
Timeline: Conqueror of Shamballa
Canon Resource Links: I have a bias against fandom wikias .... oops

Personality:

Ed is not a social person, often needing his brother to buffer his interactions with others, and keeping mostly to himself once in Germany. It's little wonder his only friend seems to be Alfons, who he was likely only drawn to due to the resemblance to his own Al back home.

Despite being generally trusting and naive at times Ed is also a realist, cynical and prideful. All of which is shown throughout his developing relationship with Rose. When they first meet, he's quick to put up his cynical front in the face of her devotion to God, but just as quick to disbelieve the horrors faced in Liore later on when he learned what the military was up to after he left, demonstrating his naive side. As much as his determination and stubbornness can be related to the trials he goes through during his childhood, there is also evidence to support it being an inherent part of Ed's personality.

He comes off as sarcastic or bitter around strangers, and acts with a total disregard to authority. Despite the maturity that Edward develops at a young age he's occasionally capable of jumping to the defensive, snapping at anyone in a childish outburst - even those close to him - for the smallest (or imagined) slight. Edward can easily be thrown for a loop or taken advantage of with a good amount of damage to his pride. It doesn't take much to rile him up if the right buttons are pushed, which is something an enemy could easily use to distract him and gain the upper hand - as long as they didn't get too cocky and let their guard down. Both of these situations (Ed's ability to be distracted, and Ed's ability to focus despite his enemy's tactics can be seen in his last battle with Envy. As he remains focused despite Envy's attempts to distract and taunt him, where he wouldn't have in the past - however, the shock of the homunculus' reveal was more than he was capable of ignoring.)

These situations are quite temporary, usually a moment of yelling before he's back to working out the best way out of his current situation - and even sometimes just enough time to give him a new perspective on whatever that situation may be. The outbursts have seriously decreased in number and intensity over the years, especially while in Germany as he's had several years to grow, mature (and be depressed mellow out) which has toned his personality down a bit. Instead, retorting with smart quips where screaming may have been more likely in the past, but lack of respect for authority figures/his elders still apparently remains a theme in his life in Germany, as pointed out by Hughes.

However, none of that stops him from being a caring individual, both sensitive to other's feelings and even sweet to those he develops any level of concern about, given the right circumstances. All of that is only the way he comes off to strangers and those who don't know him well - just scratching the surface of what makes up Edward Elric. Not only does he view what he's done as helping the people of Liore, but he steps in again to help once he realizes what actually happened there. In a similar vein, taking Noah in despite knowing nothing about her - simply because she had nowhere else to go -
perfectly sums up Ed's naive ability to care about others, who may even be a danger to him.

Ed is known in canon to be a genius - he's perceptive and tactical, a skilled martial artist, and practiced in hand-to-hand combat. Ed is a quick thinker, a problem solver, and calculating even under pressure. He's also able to pick locks and a naturally skilled talent at alchemy - able to translate even the most thoroughly coded alchemy texts in a considerably short time. He thinks on his feet under pressure (most of the time) and more often than not he does it outside the box. Ed is stubborn and refuses to give up, even when hope seems lost. Although Ed shows a keen eye for details others miss, he's usually the first to smell a rat - as demonstrated in canon during the situation with Tucker at only 12-years-old - he takes most people at face value, trusting his enemy's words as absolute truth.

Even when he accuses them of lying, it comes off as more of denial/refusal to believe what he doesn't want to, rather than that he actually suspects dishonesty. He's prone to denial and ignoring what's right in front of him, conflicting with his perceptiveness is his ability to refuse to admit to things, even when he does see them. Although he recognizes Sloth as appearing like Trisha the first time he sees her, he dismisses it - even telling Al that he's imagining things when the younger brother recognizes her voice after the incident with Scar, when she arrives to take Doctor Marcoh. Although Ed does eventually acknowledge what she is, his attitude toward her - and homunculi in general - remains questionable throughout the series as he continues to let his own feelings get in the way of facts he's faced with.

He's dedicated, determined and loyal to a fault. He makes fast friends off the bat, even sometimes with his 'enemies' (The Tringhams, for example) showing that he's more than capable of adapting to change as well. Edward also happens to be an optimist - even when he gives up, the right words or amount of time has him back on his feet, ready to try again. Mostly from Al, but also demonstrated with Maria Ross during the lab 5 research.

First and foremost, his strongest trait could easily be labeled as loyalty - as even at a young age, above all else Edward's first priority is family. As a child his interest in alchemy only multiplied with the pleasure his mother had found in their work. His dedication to making her happy and seeking praise was tireless, even after she was taken by illness, determined to bring her back to life and see her smile again. Edward's devotion to family, and thirst for knowledge to fuel that devotion, can make one wonder if he has any desires of his own.

No matter how level-headed he may be in other situations, Ed's concern for his younger brother's well being can completely wipe out his thought process. Al in danger automatically erases any trace of rational thought from his mind, instantly putting him in just as much - if not more - danger than anyone else involved. Ed's crippling fear of losing his brother, and overbearing guilt for what he perceives as his fault - Al losing his body - can be life threatening. During the transmutation when Ed realizes that not only did he fail to bring back their mother, he lost Al in the process, he offers everything he has to get him back screaming, 'my arm, my heart, take anything you want-' to sacrifice himself for his brother's return. This mindset is demonstrated several times throughout the series, and can easily be described as Ed's biggest weakness, he never considers his own health or safety when it comes to protecting Al. Ed is always thinking of Al first, even at the risk of his own life.

Edward maintains an intense bond to his brother that others might call obsessive, despite fearing that Alphonse hates him (blaming him for the loss of his body), Ed repeatedly puts himself in danger to save his brother's life, willing to die without a hesitation when Scar promises not to harm Al in return. He's willing to risk life and limb - literally - for the younger boy's well being, going so far as to transmute himself to bring Alphonse back from the Gate, after the younger Elric uses the Philosopher's Stone to revive him.

He has an ego that boasts of self importance, but he carries an ill-concealed guilt and insecurity about a lot of things under that cocky attitude. As much as he seeks praise and recognition with strangers throughout his teenage years, around those he trusts it's much more obvious that he feels unworthy of any ego stroking. Edward blames himself for the human transmutation and the disastrous results it caused - even though Al assumes the responsibility as well. Ed shoulders the blame of what's gone wrong in his past, and given time to dwell on it, can let the guilt of previous actions (or inaction, in the case of Nina) consume him. Still, this doesn't stop him from being cocky in public, and stubborn about things he truly believes in. He's determined and goal oriented, self-absorbed in a number of ways and often boasts of putting his own goals first, regardless of the warnings given to him about their danger. Despite this, doing what he believes is right remains a big priority for him. Edward believes in always moving forward, imposing this belief upon others during trying times in their lives the same way Mustang expected it of him when he was devastated by the tragic loss of Nina.

It takes facing the reality of Alphonse becoming the Philosopher's Stone and how human nature itself nurtures war for him to mature past this tunnel vision, and realize that we're all responsible in part for the world around us. Ed continues to have some growing to do even from that point, as two years later his thoughts remain on his own newer goal, his brother and his world - instead of the life that's in front of him.

All of that changes when, once again, Ed is faced with war - and his brother - telling him that they need to accept their part of the blame for what's happened and focus on the world around them instead of just their own goals.

This was ridiculous. Wherever he was, he didn't recognize it and a quick glance around revealed nothing but a small red and white ball sitting on the otherwise unremarkable bed. Ed picked it up - hoping to get some information from somewhere - with a frown. Inspecting it curiously as he turned it over in his hands, the blond was completely caught off guard when it cracked open emitting a white light, only to find a small white pony standing before him with a flaming tail and mane. That... was not what he expected. Although, it was hard to say he knew what to expect at all. Ed barely had a chance to react before some woman showed up, practically pushing him out of the house with a bag and some cheerful nonsense about a journey. It wasn't as if he'd intended to find himself in some stranger's house, but he couldn't figure out how to get back if he had no idea how he got here in the first place - so he didn't take being ushered from the only room he supposed had any clues too lightly. Still, the woman didn't seem too interested in his questions or protests, insisting that everything he needed to know was right there in the bag she'd handed to him, and he should be on his way. Resigned to not getting back in any time soon, Ed sighed and turned his back to the house, glancing around to take in his surroundings.

"Where the hell..."

Before he even had a chance to question what was going on, he noticed the music. Definitely a far cry from the sounds he was used to, and not a familiar face in sight - which was an odd thing to find bizarre, but after two years he'd gotten pretty used to it. Ed found a bench and settled down there to look through this bag that's supposed to have all of his answers in it, only to find none. He barely contained the groan as he rifled through the bag, pushing aside clothes and other random items until he came across something that caught his attention. Sure, there was plenty of information but it wasn't the kind of information he wanted. From the sounds of it this place wasn't anywhere near Germany, nevermind where he'd last remembered being with his brother. Which meant wherever here was, Al was there alone - and Germany was no Amestris. A little more wary about touching the gadgets he found in this world, Edward turned to the paper notes instead.

He jumped to his feet as the animal from earlier approached regarding him curiously, attempting to shove its face into the bag before Ed snatched it away.

"Hey! What do you think you're doing?! Why are you even still here, shouldn't you run off or something?"

The pokémon's head tilted curiously, calmly watching him as if to imply it had the patience to wait him out, which only made Ed scowl in response before a thought occurred to him. There was something in the information he'd been reading about being able to learn about these creatures by pointing the Gear provided at them. Warily, he pulled the small device out of the bag and looked it over - carefully - before following the instructions to understand how the PokéDex worked. Thanks to the Trainer Handbook, figuring out the 'Gear wasn't too hard for someone like Ed, despite his technological disadvantage, and he was going through the information in no time. When he positioned it toward the pony though, he nearly jumped as the screen lit up with various information about the pokémon before him.

Well, at least that was taken care of. If it wasn't going to leave him alone, the least he could do was find some food for it. Maybe that's why it was poking its nose into his bag in the first place. With a shrug, Ed closes the bag and slings it over his shoulder starting toward the path leading out of town.

"Let's go. Maybe we can find you something to eat along the way."

The ponyta followed after him cautiously, as if expecting him to change his mind any minute, not that it seemed to deter the creature.

http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/114311-Explaining-the-Term-Warriors-of-Light <--this is some information about how the term "Warrior of Light" applies. Naltryd falls under the Second Wave category.

Any further details are pretty much just the game's plot, linked down in the next section.

Original Character Background: As Naltryd's the playable character in an MMORPG, here we go!

Naltryd was born in the city-state of Ul'dah to a middle class merchant couple. Though her parents were not Ul'Dah natives, the reputation of the city's wealth was something that attracted many merchants (and people in general) to try to make a living there. Many found it nigh impossible to break into the established market, but they'd somehow managed, and both lived and sold their wares on the outskirts of the city near its wall. An only child, Naltryd was expected to take over the family business, and so much of her childhood was spent both learning crafts (weaving, in particular) and learning how to be a successful businesswoman. She was decent enough at it, but it often left her bored and restless.

Even with a mostly successful business, however, being outsiders to the city left her parents making more than a few enemies. In a place like Ul'dah, everything had an underbelly, and rags-to-riches stories weren't always met with admiration. For Naltryd's safety, they eventually left the city when she was about ten in order to become traveling salesmen and not catch anyone powerful's eyes too much. Naltryd took well to this, loving seeing new places and exploring new things. They never strayed too far outside of Thanalan, and living day to day on the road was never easy, but it still brought her joy.

When she was a teenager, she happened to stumble across a pugilist training against a dummy set up in a town her family was currently selling things in. The way he fought fascinated her, and she insisted he teach her what he knew, even if it was very little. It never hurt to be able to protect herself and her family, and even if he didn't have much to teach her, she took to it quickly anyway. Through the years she kept up a regimen she'd created for herself. Her style was sloppy and untrained, not having many concepts to work off of, but she did the best she could anyway.

Naltryd realized as the years passed that she much preferred fighting than selling shirts and trousers. Her parents were growing older, and she feared that the day would soon come where she would be expected to take up the mantle. She'd seen a little over twenty summers when the war with Garlemald came to a head and the Calamity occurred. Needless to say, no one came out of that incident unscathed. Her family had survived, but many others she had been familiar with had perished in Bahamut's attack. With the refugee camps outside Ul'dah's city walls overflowing, they instead took residence in a camp outside of Horizon. With people simply trying to survive and rebuild now, there wasn't as much business, though they got by decently enough selling basic clothing necessities to the townspeople and to others in similar situations to their own.

Naltryd helped where she could, but she found herself led more to helping patrol the area and dealing with any potential dangers from beasts than hawking wares. Her parents weren't blind to their daughter's wants and wishes. They gave her their blessing to take some time away to discover what she really wanted and who she wanted to be. She still didn't want to stray too far from them, of course, so she stayed in Thanalan. The pugilist she met years ago, she recalled, had mentioned something about having a master back in Ul'dah. And so she returned to her hometown, intent on seeking out the guild. Becoming an adventurer just seemed to come hand in hand with it all, a way to earn coin and help others at the same time. Plenty of people needed help now, more than ever, and she'd seen it for herself. And adventuring? That sounded great in general.

It was there in Ul'dah that she met Thancred, a Scion of the Seventh Dawn, and her life was changed forever. She discovered she had a supernatural ability called the Echo, one that would serve her well in the future. Naltryd soon found herself wrapped up in an adventure far beyond what she could have ever imagined. Eorzea was in danger from both the beast tribes within and neighboring land of Garlemald. It needed a hero, a shining beacon of light to inspire and save the people, and she would become this.

That wraps up pre-game events. As for game events…well, there's a lot considering how long this game has been out and the very nature of it being a story based MMO. This is the most comprehensive collection of plot summaries. It's honestly difficult to find anything shorter than that that covers the entire game up to date.

The background I determined for her is based mostly on the game's lore when it comes to Ul'dah. At the very beginning of the game, on your way to town, you are asked whether you've been there or not before. Both are options, and I chose the former. Since I created Naltryd in game as a hyur highlander, it would be more likely that her family was not native to a city heavily populated by lalafell. Most highlanders in the city are refugees from Ala Mhigo, but not all, so I went with the second most likely explanation in that her family were merchants. It wasn't until recently that we started learning more details about Ala Mhigo as it is, and it won't be until the next expansion that I would feel comfortable enough getting the details right in her family having come directly from there. And so, I worked with what solid lore the game has given us so far.

Her interest in becoming a pugilist is a way to explain how right now, her main job is monk. Nothing too lore specific there aside from the fact that Naltryd is based on my in game character and that punching things in the face is what I ended up mainly doing and becoming familiar with, mechanics and storyline included. Her urge to help people and fight instead of just sitting around stems from the fact that, well, you're an adventurer in the game. By the nature of a game like this, you're running fetch quests, saving the world, breaking rocks, and exterminating monsters. It's what the Warrior of Light does. There's also the ability to craft, of course, which is why I had her having learned a trade early on. That explains how she can do said crafting. The background as helping as a saleswoman as well lends to her having developed the charisma that the Warrior of Light clearly has in order to inspire so many people in Eorzea.

Personality: With a generally cheerful and bright demeanor, Naltryd tries to keep a smile on her face both for herself and those around her. She is the Warrior of Light, and it would not do for her to be outwardly gloomy. Naltryd is quick to laughter and finds amusement in even the ordinary. She has a tendency to tease and poke fun at her comrades, trying to keep the mood light during Eorzea's dark times. One of her main duties, after all, is to inspire those around her.

However, though she had always considered herself to be emotionally strong, her losses during her adventure have been building up and chipping away at her optimism. The loss of Haurchefant in particular is one she still has not gotten over, and each person's life around her claimed has affected her deeply. One close ally after another is slipping through her grasp, and for all her strength, she is powerless to save them. Deep in her heart, Naltryd is exhausted. Being the hero of Eorzea is an enormous burden. There are times where she feels bitter about her vital responsibility of solving the land's problems, almost enslaved to sacrifice everything.

Vengeance is something that she has also learned over time. Especially if her allies are targeted, she will never forgive, and never forget. When Haurchefant was taken from her, she vowed to tear the very heart out of the man responsible for it. She is fiercely protective of those she loves and will go to great lengths to protect them, and if she fails, then at least avenge them.

Through it all she still finds the strength to go on. Naltryd draws hope from her allies, and even if her steps are heavier, every smile on the face of someone she helps is enough to get her through the days.

Personality:
Dirk Strider is an enigmatic person. One would know nothing about him at a glance outside of assuming he might be some sort of cool stoic action hero. His weapon is something that's stated more than once as being "unbreakable." Dirk is unyielding and seems unbreakable himself, like he's made of steel. His outward disposition so aloof that people can't get a read on him. His introduction puts a lot of emphasis how talented and cool he is more than anything else about him. Even people who know him best had still needed to put him together like a puzzle. The reasons why he seems this way can sum up to Dirk having no idea how to act like a functioning human being sometimes.

He was alone for sixteen years. Dirk grew up in the middle of a flooded wasteland. He could never venture out into his chaotic world without a threat looming over. He managed to raise himself, somehow, despite this. He had to be active and know how to take initiative because the other option was perishing. Dirk's only (non-artificially created) social contact had been with people over the internet. Out of the five people he knows total, only one existed in the same time frame and two were aliens sharing a body. After starting the game, he has only had about half of year with them. Dirk has difficulty expressing himself and knowing how to act around people. He fails at not making his first relationship emotionally draining for Jake. He doesn't get why they shouldn't spend every waking second together. They were both alone all their lives so why would they want alone time?

It's joked by his friends that he could be an emotionless robot. He looks and acts like a ruthless mastermind. The first in-person meeting with his friends was him saving them in one swoop. He hadn't hesitated for a second to do things like kiss them all and murder himself. He's had to put aside outright expressing things to protect himself and to focus on the task at hand. He's never had to express certain things, anyway. Affection is difficult to express for him. This is true even if it's with Roxy, who he spent his entire life protecting, or his actual boyfriend. He hadn't known how to start a hug or when the proper time for it would be because he's never needed to do that before. Kisses were for the non-affectionate purpose of saving everyone's ass. He won't tell he cares for them outright unless pushed to an extreme. He'll choose to convey it in a way that seems like he's joking or he'll go sharing the thought with someone else. The proper way to share hasn't made itself known. Dirk wants people to know what he's thinking and feeling and expects them to see through any gesture. His lack of proper expression isn't enough to convey unless he outright says what's on his mind. He can appear more or less emotionally unbreakable, like a well-disciplined Vulcan. Even while under the influence of Trickster Mode, Dirk seems detached. His friends express thoughts and desires to eerie smiling extremes. He yells at them but remains in control of himself.

Being around Dirk, with all his social ineptitude, can be difficult. It's stated that Dirk has a usual way of getting exactly what he wants. He believes it's expected of him to do it all. He can be controlling and pushy. Taking the lead and pulling all the strings had been his self-described MO for a while. His method of doing things are the best possible method in his head. The best method could be completely insane to the normal person. For example, to teach Jake fight, he has a robot ambush him and beat the crap out of him. Dirk's method of teaching anyone how to ride a bike would be to shove them down a large hill and tell them to peddle.

His control-freak attitude can turn into playing mind games that border on manipulative. He insists things are good and handled when questioned. He assumes he is the one in control. He thinks of himself as a puppeteer, in every sense of the word (also holy SHIT does he love puppets). He grew up with puppets and robots he was responsible for creating and had never refused an idea from him. He ends up treating real people the same way he would treat the puppets and robots. The only thing that talked back was The Auto-Responder (Hal). He assumes AR to be predictable enough for a long time seeing how it's his brain in there. He gives Jane the title of leader but tells her he is going to be the one pulling the strings in the background. He doesn't ask if they're okay with his plans or even share the details before enacting them. He phrases things as opinions to nudge people into the direction he wants them to go. He assumes he knows what's best for people, knows what they need and where they need to improve. He gave his friends advice to aid their personal development. The advice was pointing out their flaws and explaining how to fix them. He tells Jake to be more skeptical and tells Jane to be less so. He leaves his Auto-Responder on with Jake to keep him toes and force this skepticism. He's the only one in the group that calls Roxy out on her drinking habits and tries to get her to stop.

His friends often have no idea what to make of his actions. They assume something might be part of some grand convoluted scheme they know they can't win. They often don't know how to talk to him directly. When they try, he doesn't realize when he's not letting someone get a word in. Roxy and Jake both express a fear of failing him, of telling him what they think. People have a hard time saying 'No.' It's never his intention to be this way.

Without a human culture to dictate the norm, he picked it apart from the past. His main influence is the long-dead guardian figure of his "Bro" (His universe's Dave). Not only with things left for him (an entire crawlspace filled with orange soda?) but in how he assumed the man acted. He's built up the legend in his head using what information he could gather. This is his idol, the legacy of which he wishes to live up to and improve upon. He believes having this positive figure helped him become a better person. Dave set the standard for who he wanted to be like. Being the overachiever that he is, he takes ironic gestures such as acts of masculinity to an extreme. He's a gay man but refuses to make his orientation anything more than a footnote. One of the reasons is to keep up an act of belonging to a culture that existed centuries before him. The performance, as he words it, is difficult to break. He's been doing it his entire life. This wall of dudebro irony and stoic expression helps him control his world. It allows him to fit in better with Jake and Jane, who exist at the same time his idol lived. They don't understand his situation until it's explained to them later on. This wall of irony also limits how visible his true thoughts and feelings are. This helps protect him from any monitoring by the evil alien overlord.

He's not an emotionless robot under that blank expression. He has a lot of feelings but they're internalized. While he does act upon the art-form of 'irony', there is sincerity in every action. He doesn't claim irony as a reason for him doing anything unless someone asks or he's embarrassed. Irony should, at its core under the many layers, be an act of sincerity. Dirk does know when to get serious. He's willing to admit when things aren't as perfect as he wants them to be when deemed necessary. This is true even in cases where he might justify the problems later. Dirk doesn't shy away from deep conversation when it's with someone he trusts. He knows they will understand what he's trying to articulate. He goes the deepest when speaking to Jane and later on Dave, people who he feels the most comfortable with. He's upfront with Jane right from the start and their conversations are the most telling. He thinks she gets him the most out of his core group. In a lesser instance, Calliope since she provided the method of contacting everyone. He goes to her for advice on things about the game. He is willing to share and offer genuine opinions, express fears and general thoughts. He'll go quiet and just listen in to offer support, despite how inexperienced he is at it.

Dirk has a huge heart. He loves almost unconditionally. He thinks he's being helpful until it becomes clear he's not. His habit of pushing his friends stems from wanting to witness them to succeed. He never assumes that they're incapable of doing something with the right motivation. He doesn't think having a robot kick Jake's ass would ever hurt him because he thinks Jake can beat it. He believes in his friends completely and holds the utmost respect for them. This goes especially for Roxy. He thinks she is far stronger than he'll ever be. He sees her as the only one capable of overcoming her own flaws and the main glue that keeps them (him) together. He feels guilty his love can only be platonic because he just wants to make her happy. Dirk confesses doesn't think he could ever intentionally cause her harm. This carries over to any of his friends. He can't raise his sword to them, even if it he knew it would result in their advancement. He wouldn't want to raise a hand to them either, unless he thinks they can block it. He even hesitates destroying his own creations. He refuses to throw a lifeless puppet away that holds sentimental value. He claims Lil' Cal is his guardian on more than one occasion. The thought of having to intentionally hurt terrifies him. He'd rather sacrifice himself than have someone/thing he cares about face pain. In a doomed timeline (resulting from [S] Game Over), he completely gives up when his friends die. He's too overcome with grief and lets himself fade into pixelated oblivion. In a life where the majority of it had been loneliness, he clings to people that give him the light of day.

Dirk can often play the straight man (pun not intended) to his friends. He's the logical voice of reason while they're all hyped up on magic candy. He calls himself a "wet-blanket." His reactions to antics can be the equal to looking into the camera like he's on The Office. This does not mean he can not be downright ridiculous himself or just plain awkward. He's an intellectual and uses it in endless sarcasm. This displays at times as being an insufferable know-it-all. This like Rose Lalonde, his ectodaughter. Roxy comments with "You're Dirk!" upon hearing her speak. He shares a verbose analytical way of talking to people. This isn't surprising considering his conversational partners were robots. He has habit of getting too long-winded with his writings. While he speaks more like Rose, he has tangents using inappropriate metaphors like Dave. He can be both terse and wordy depending on who he's talking to and the current comfort level. Jake has been on the receiving end of getting blunt one-word replies laced with sarcasm. Jane has gotten paragraphs of rambling filled with pop-culture and literary references. He might say something and have no one know what he means or get carried away. He will immediately shut up when he realizes this. He's completely game for humorous fun when nothing dire is happening. For instance, Dirk indulges Caliborn's request that he draw smut. The drawings end up including Jake eating a baby and Roxy comparing breasts to an ocean.

He knows he might not be completely up-to-date on Normal Behavior 101 but he still thinks he's cool. He knows he's cool. He thinks he's the coolest. He doesn't pretend to be. He thinks he is to the point of having bragging rights about it. He thinks he's basically Batman, intelligent and badass. He has absurd hobbies and interests but he owns that he likes what he likes. He can have people questioning if there's so many layers of irony that he made something stupid cool. He has a lot of confidence when it comes to almost all his abilities. He takes action and is completely confident a plan will work. He knows he's fully capable. He's a perfectionist and an overachiever who puts far more than 100% into everything he does. He sets the bar high for himself and everyone around him.

The only thing he's not confident in is his own personality. A sword may look awesome and be useful in a fight but it's full of sharp edges and dangerous to be around otherwise. He knows he's cool but he also knows "cool" could be a terrible person. Growing up alone, Dirk has been with his own thoughts for a long time. He surrounded himself with versions of himself. This made a constant mirror for him to look into and see his own flaws. He externalizes these versions to the point where he often feels he is an outsider looking at himself. After finally being around people, he realizes his interactions with people can be toxic. He does not believe himself to be a good person in the slightest. Dirk puts himself in a constant struggle to avoid being an even worse person. His own worst enemy is himself, metaphorically and literally. This is clear with how to reacts to the Auto Responder. The AR is an artificial intelligence that started out as a copy of brain at age thirteen. Dirk allowed him to pretend to be him until he realized his behavior is something he doesn't like. The AR points out is the same behavior Dirk would be having in the same situation. The AR is rude to him and Dirk does it back because this is how he thinks he deserves to be treated.

His low opinions of himself twist his confidence. This leads to a distrust in others when it comes to opinions about him. Dirk is arrogant, even during all his self-loathing. He is the smartest but since he can't fix himself, no one can. He's the failure because he is the most qualified. It's all on him. Compliments directed towards him are often dismissed. He is not reaching his own personal standards. He doesn't like what he sees in the mirrors. He thinks he knows best and what he knows is that he's the worst so everyone else is wrong when they say he's not. He knows it to his core. He distances himself from his friends when things go south. This distance only causes him to feel terrible because he is alone with himself again.

He can get caught in a cycle of unintentional self-sabotage as a result of this skewed self-image. Nothing about Dirk Strider is "half-assed." One can count on him to put a lot of thought and effort into everything. While this can be a good thing and turn him into an unstoppable force, it can also turn him into a complete disaster. His inability to let something go sends him into a downward spiral when mixed with his self-hate. He ends up sabotaging himself without knowing how to stop because he has to keep trying to perfect the flaws. He has to perfect something because no one else is capable. He keeps trying and trying without stopping to ask for help then he hates himself for it. Repeat forever.

He fears that sharing his deep respect and love would overwhelm Roxy. In actuality, it would be the other way around. It would overwhelm him to hear praise he can't argue with. He holds remorse for everything he does and everything every version of him does. He owns up to what he does and says in every universe. He isn't sure how to approach fixing problematic areas without an act of self-destruction. He almost destroys AR but can't bring himself to do it. AR states he doesn't think Dirk is capable of being happy under any normal circumstances. This is yet another factor into why his face remains stoic. He doesn't think he has anything to smile about.

He puts himself under a lot of stress. Dirk stated he does not sleep, trying to be alert at all times. He likely doesn't sleep much once he lacks a dream-self that allows a constant state of being awake. He gets distracted while trying to do everything at once and always ends up zoning out on one end to focus on the other. Despite claims and attempts to do so, he's not great at multi-tasking. But his life required him to be on guard and never learned how not to be, so he keeps at it. He more or less skipped childhood. He assumed he had to take the position of main protector for the group like he had always been for himself.

He idealizes his friends and feels he has to help them. This is the role he thinks he is best at and doesn't know what other purpose he might serve for them outside of it. He doesn't want anyone to see him fail because failure would mean a loss of purpose and thus a loss of self. The complete loss of control is the worst fear for him so he grasps at what little he can get of it to remain functional. He keeps trying even if things are completely out of his hands. Their entire game session had been out of their hands. He kept scoping out every little part of it despite knowing it was a waiting game to find something to grasp. Dirk can't back down completely lest he completely shatter to pieces.

He's getting better at picking pieces back up. At the end, we see him talking with Jake after mutually avoiding each other. This looks like conversation that involves apologizing or having a more formal official break-up. Dirk seems to be actually sharing emotions in a reasonable matter. Jake's personality and way of life is almost the polar opposite of Dirk. Jake goes with the flow and was ready for adventure at the drop of a hat. This always appealed to him and he saw Jake as a second half that could help control his insanity. It didn't at the time but he knows having him there is better than not as a balance, even if romance is off the table.

The first big step before this was with Dave, someone who isn't his idol but he thinks might be even better. He states he's glad someone gave him an objective opinion about himself. He hasn't received one before. Roxy has idolized him, Jane and Jake had been too kind and AR has only ever amplified his own opinions back at him. He gives up control to Dave and lets him take the reigns of the fight (and literally murder him in a triple head slice.) Dirk stopped being unbreakable.

But he's still a fuck up that looks at puppet porn. Jesus.
