    Character
    Name: Murphy Pendleton
    Series: Silent Hill
    Timeline: Post-Truth & Justice ending
Canon Resource Links: Murphy on the Silent Hill wiki
Notable choices & ending for this portrayal: Help Anne, Taunt JP, Spare Anne. Truth & Justice ending. This puts Murphy in a morally grey area overall and ultimately means he killed Patrick Napier but didn’t kill Frank Coleridge, and was able to escape Silent Hill.

    Personality:
Murphy is, in a word, distant. He’s soft spoken and keeps his head down for all intents and purposes, and prefers avoiding people altogether rather than engaging them. His aloofness and the curt way in which he speaks to strangers can make him seem callous, but in reality, he is anything but.

While he is brusque in manner and easily frustrated, he is slow to anger, and usually only grows irate when he is personally attacked multiple times or extremely sensitive subjects are brought into question. He displays great patience and empathy with other people, even when they are hostile toward him, and doesn’t often fail to come to the aid of those who appear to need it. He is especially kind and protective towards young children, mindful to keep vulgar language to a minimum and maintain a gentle demeanor, and grows vehemently angry and distressed when their safety is jeopardized.

There is certainly a guarded nature about him, but it was cultivated for appropriate reason. Having felt judged and dismissed by others, even loved ones, his entire life, and hyperaware of the stigma he now bears as a convict, Murphy simply keeps his distance and doesn’t strike at those who haven’t, in his eyes, wronged him or someone else unfairly. Other people appear to be among his greatest fears, all of the creatures spawned from his psyche in Silent Hill seeming more obviously humanoid than many of the town’s previous victims’. In addition to dreading judgment by those he esteems, he internalizes his fears of strangers and authority figures, especially those encountered in his incarceration.

Although he is easily frightened, he usually suppresses his fears and soldiers on until his life is threatened, and even then, he would rather take charge of the situation by fighting or fleeing than sit down and take whatever harm is intended for him.

As far as he’s concerned, however, the person who has done him the most harm is himself. Even the creature he despises most in his Silent Hill is a thinly veiled mirror of Murphy. He blames himself for being unable to protect his son Charlie from being kidnapped and murdered, and for the assault on and death of his only positive authority figure in prison, and he desperately yearns for the forgiveness and affection of the ex-wife he estranged when he got himself arrested.

Murphy’s penchants for self-doubt and -destruction likely stem from an internal struggle of what’s right and what’s wrong. His moral behavior may be “live and let live” one moment and “an eye for an eye” the next, depending on the situation. Even prior to his stint in prison, he participated in morally grey, if not criminal, activities, though he claims to never have injured a person who didn’t deserve it. He seems to strive to do what is right, but his emotions can get the better of him in some instances, and he often tries to justify quite extreme solutions. This is especially prevalent in his role as Patrick Napier’s killer.

At the time leading up to the confrontation, ending the life of his son’s murderer was the only thing that mattered to him, and he felt he was the only one who could bring about real justice. He was more than willing to sink himself into debt with the corrupt corrections officer George Sewell in order to get the alone time with Napier needed to kill him.

After the fact, however, perhaps especially after Sewell’s attack on Frank Coleridge in which Murphy is implicated, he shows a tremendous amount of guilt. He remarks that it doesn’t even matter that he killed Napier, as it didn’t bring Charlie back; this is one way he realizes and acknowledges that although he excused the act as seeking justice at the time, in the end it was simply vengeance. This quest for revenge not only made him a murderer too, and therefore no better of a man, it also resulted in Frank’s death, for which he readily accepts responsibility despite never harming Frank with his own hands.

Having essentially nothing left and being a wanted criminal, Murphy seems primarily motivated to simply survive, although even this drive has its limits. When trapped or targeted by others with no options or escape left, he accepts his fate and impending death with little argument. However, he will continue moving forward as long as there is an opportunity to do so, even if he had previously given up hope.

[Murphy is careful to avoid putting out video feed; even in a strange place, he shouldn’t be plastering his face across the network. Who knows who’d be watching?

His voice is tired and a little agitated, but for the most part, he keeps it level.]

I don’t know whose idea of a joke this is, but I get it. I do. I’ve already played this game. The big accident, the waking up in a strange town, the weird creatures. The whole song and dance.

Look, it seems nice here. It really does. But if whoever’s in charge can just… cut it out, that’d be great. And I know you’re listening. You always are.

I'm done with being trapped against my will. I did my time. I don’t belong here. Let me go home.

    Character
    Name: Janey Springs
    Series: Borderlands
Timeline: After Tales from the Borderlands
    Canon Resource Links: sup

    Personality:
Janey Springs is, like all of the characters in the Borderlands universe, introduced with a title card. Hers reads, “Black marketer. Heart of gold.” And that's exactly what she is. Janey genuinely likes people. She's been isolated and alone for so long that she sort of latches onto whomever she runs across; her friendship with the Vault Hunters—and especially Athena—is a fast one, for the most part. Since Janey's a junker and likes to build stuff, she's truly happy to help people. In Tales from the Borderlands, she even helps the main characters build a rocket ship. Janey's not just the type of person to help someone if they just need a favor: She's the one to help the player character find an Oz kit so they can actually breathe up on Elpis, the moon. She even offers to repair a broken Oz kit so the character doesn't die horribly. Along the same vein, Janey's… pretty cheerful about the concept of possibly dying from oxygen deprivation. She's very straightforward and to the point (The second you open this door, all the oxygen is gonna vent and you're gonna suffocate. It'll hurt a lot and your eyes will pop like grapes when the pressure differential gets too harsh.) and is far from afraid from letting that be known. … Except she also, after the player comes out of the door, she says cheerfully, “Don't think about the grapes thing!” Helpful.

She isn't modest about her skills, and she thinks her friends shouldn't be, either. Janey's good at reassuring people: The sidequest involving Torgue has her comforting him when he's upset about the fact that “people like lasers more than explosions.” When Scooter suggests that his work isn't much to look at, Janey reassures him that it is very good. Janey wants people to feel good about themselves. Unless you're an asshole. However, as much faith as Janey has in people, she tends to worry a lot. Her whole problem with Athena's going out and taking jobs is because Athena's throwing herself into danger--and Janey worries to hell and back about her. She's about as much of an optimist as you can get in Borderlands; as Athena says in a line of cut dialogue, she doesn't understand how people can kill thousands to finish a job or get nice loot. Janey's a genuinely good person—if a little... erm, boisterous.

“Heart of gold” is definitely the best way to describe Janey—even if that heart of gold is buried beneath layers of grease. Janey can come off as a little too forward, but she's comfortable with who she is and her sexuality. She hits on Athena several times, even being so bold as to let on that she has a “sexy scar” on her stomach. (EXTREMELY sexy. Athena.) She's blunt about her advances; she sees no reason to hide that she is! She probably has every reason to be so straightforward; she's been alone for a long time, and she's survived on Elpis for a long time. You don't survive on Elpis without being made of really strong stuff, and Janey actually thrives there. She's the reason the player character survives more than ten seconds on the moon. Even when things don't quite go her way, Janey is happy when people are happy; there's a sidequest in which the player can either deliver a thing to Janey or throw it into the lava—at the behest of a certain Mr. Torgue. If the player chooses to throw it into the lava, Janey's a little disappointed… but she's happy that he's happy.
Still, 'least you made the muscly guy happy! I call that a net gain.
With Athena, her heart of gold shines through especially. Janey loves Athena so deeply; which is why when she realizes Athena's been lying to her, it stings. Badly. Janey is upset—but at the same time, when Athena finally comes clean, she forgives her. Janey's capacity for forgiveness (unless you're a kraggon or Deadlift) is pretty impressive! Mostly where Athena's concerned. Throughout Tales, Janey is very persistent in emphasizing that Athena is past her bounty hunting days; she sounds vaguely threatening whenever Athena suggests going back to her old, dangerous life. More than anything, Janey does trust Athena. She believes in her more than anyone else.

As a junker, Janey is super creative and super smart. She builds stuff for a living, after all, and that stuff is built from practically nothing. Spare parts aren't much to look at, but once Janey's on the job, she can create some pretty amazing stuff. She even manages to cobble together a rocket ship that actually works fairly well (fairly—there are a few hitches but, hey, Janey isn't perfect) and does the job. Janey's true creativity shines through if the player chooses her in the final showdown against the Traveler in Tales—when she controls Gortys, a huge robot, she manages to get Gortys to fire actual jets. And she kicks the Traveler in the face. No mercy from this junker.

Which brings us to a less-than-cheerful Janey Springs: She can be incredibly vengeful. Like, scarily vengeful. Mess with her or anyone she cares about, and you're in for it. For example, Janey's girlfriend, Steph, was killed by kraggons. Janey very much wants to see them dead—she even talks about making “corpse jewelry” out of them. Her title card in Tales even reads “Slayer of kraggons,” so she has a serious vendetta against them. It's probably a little excessive, but Janey is still hurting deeply over the loss of Steph, even after so long. Janey represses the hell out of her negative feelings. There are times when she lets the hurt shine through, such as when she's talking about the kraggons killing “her”… that is, Steph. So Janey wants to see every last one of the buggers dead, because they stole from her someone so important. Janey is also the type to want to see assholes dead. She contracts the Vault Hunter to kill a guy named Deadlift, partly because he didn't take well to her not being into guys, but mostly because “he's an asshole.” Literally. She emphasizes this constantly throughout the sidequest, and she's absolutely right: Guy's an asshole.

Janey, also, can dwell very deeply on her sadness. There's an obvious heaviness to her voice when she speaks about her dead girlfriend; she almost sounds like she's going to cry. Of course, she deals with this in a slightly… unconventional way: She writes a children's book about it.
This one is called, "Baby Kraggon Goes On An Adventure". Baby Kraggon crawled out of the crack with his mum, Flamey. They saw strange two-legged creatures and thought, "They must be food!" So Baby Kraggon and his mum raided the camp. Flamey tore a two-legger up pretty bad, and Baby Kraggon killed another one. Then Baby Kraggon ran away like a little b***h, stupid piece of s**t.
This is an actual thing Janey writes. She channels her anger through actual children's books—and she's very insistent on not censoring her work. Janey states outright that that book, in particular, was not published because she refused to change the part about people and baby kraggons dying. But, going back to Janey's sadness... she's distraught when she finds out Athena is lying to her. She can't understand why her girlfriend would lie; and more than that, Janey is unsure of herself with Athena. She worries that Athena doesn't actually like her However, when she's told that Athena said she loves her before being taken... well, Janey perks right up--and she becomes determined to rescue her girl and marry her.

Known as the man who “makes possible the impossible”, Snake usually shows himself as a calm and collected person. He is the type who rather keep his true self hidden under layers of serious and calmness, mechanisms of self defense learned in his vast experience as soldier in the battlefield.

As he hardly displays any sign of emotions, Snake rathers not to involve himself with people or get himself in complex relationships, finding them too difficult and demanding to follow and choosing solitude instead. Disguising as a dog musher, he isolated himself for years in Alaska, also dealing with alcoholism and PTSD caused by his battles in both Outer Heaven’s sabotage and Zanzibar Land Disturbance against Big Boss, his former mentor and father, revealed by the latter on their final battle.

Despite his traumas, and after learning he was nothing but a clone of Big Boss, Snake is still able to display his usual calm demeanor and go on with his mission, not bothering in fighting the fact but, instead, living with it. At its best, Snake is a firm believer that genes don’t write a man’s will but his own actions.

As well, Snake is also shown to be able to be merciful and noble, fighting fiercely for what he believes is the right thing to do, albeit his usual violence displayed in battle (as claimed by both friends and foes). On the other hand, and according to his own philosophy and his sense of justice, Snake also believes in the value of life, claiming this multiple times and fighting according to such claims, fighting for a better future for next generations coming after him.

    Huh…? Anyone…? Guess nobody’s there.

[A couple knocks just to make sure the radio is working, and David gets back to staring at this… weird dog animal kind of thing that’s barking friendly at him. It feels soft and warm (very warm) at the touch, yet he’s still not sure of what to do with him. It seems friendly enough to him, though, for being a specimen he has never encountered.]

[If it were by him, he’d just pass by the weird dog, yet somehow the animal is blocking the path. No matter how much he tries to dodge him, the dog won’t let him go any further without it.] It’s been three miles so far. Aren’t you tired of following me?

[Apparently not, since the dog keeps on kneeling against his leg, happily barking. Was he sniffing at his pocket now? Ah, that’s where he kept that weird device with a button in the middle. According to what he was told, the switch would make the ball grow to hand size in order to ‘catch a pokemon’.]

[Could this be one of those said pokemon? But wouldn’t it be just too cruel to lock him up at that tight space? He knew himself it wouldn’t be comfortable at all, and making a dog go through the same on purpose just didn’t feel right. He had his limits too. And this was one of those thing beyond his limits.]

What am I supposed to do with you? You want this ball?

Timeline: End of Episode 9: Crystal Venom
    Canon Resource Links: wiki

    Personality:
Lance is all that and a bag of chips.

At least, if you ask him, that’s what he’ll say. He’s very self-assured and overly confident in his own abilities to the point that he’s often arrogant and egotistical. He talks about himself and his capabilities as though he’s capable of practically anything and everything. However, this mostly comes out of Lance’s desire to prove himself. He wants to prove to everyone watching that he’s capable of anything and everything, but his bragging leads to him shoving his own foot so far into his mouth that its in his stomach when something goes wrong beacuse of something he did. This can definitely be seen in his self proclaimed rivalry with Keith, as it’s pointed out to him that he was only able to transfer to the fighter pilot program from the cargo pilot program at the military academy due to a certain mulleted individual flunking out.

But there is more to Lance than just this. He can be pretty sensitive and reflective at times. He desperately misses Earth and his family. His bravado serves as an attempt to cover that up, even if doesn’t always work. Just as well, Lance can also be aware of himself and his surroundings, especially when he’s in the middle of a mission. For as impulsive as Lance is, he himself is capable of recognizing when it’s better to hold back and think things through. At the same time however, Lance is not the most perceptive and can miss things that are right in front of his face.

Lance is incredibly friendly and amicable. He has a sense of humor, even if at times it most often involves sarcasm and literal fart jokes. Unless he has “legitimate” reason not to, he will treat any new person with kindness, and if it’s a cute girl, he will most definitely flirt with them. But even if he has a “legitimate” reason to not be kind to someone right away, he will also be entirely willing to change that whole way of dealing with someone if he gets legitimate reason to get over it. So even while Lance maintains a rivalry with Keith, it quickly goes from something Lance does to compensate for his jealousy to something Lance does as a way to bond with a new friend.

As the pilot of the blue lion, Lance embodies the water element of his lion very well. Much like water, Lance isn’t static. Water is ever changing, going from form to form constantly and there is more to it than just what’s seen at first. Like water, Lance adapts to the situation that he’s thrown in. He may not enjoy it, but Lance will do what he thinks is best. And in the end, he’ll do it in the most Lance way possible. After all, just because water becomes ice when it’s cold, doesn’t mean it’s any different from water when it’s a liquid.

Lance sits on the ground and watches the… Shinx? That’s what it’s called again, right? He watches the Shinx play on the ground in front of him. He’s still not used to this whole pokemon thing, to be honest. But then again, it was a whirlwind of events that forced him out of the house he suddenly woke up again to going out into the wild to start a journey of his own into the world of pokemon. To be honest, he feels like he just experienced the openning sequence of some sort of video game. There were no real choices, just press play and watch the game start.

    But that’s just silly.

He has a moment to finally breathe and try to catch up. One minute, he just finished having the most terrible, no good, very bad day that just happened because of the castle being corrupted by a Galran crystal and now he’s here. Shinx is doing well stalking a blade of grass. It’s low to the ground, eyes focused on that surely dangerous blade of grass.

...At least he got a blue lion pokemon for a starter. It’s a small comfort, to be honest. While it’s not any replacement for his regular blue lion. For one thing, it’s about one thousand times too small to be his Blue but it’s still nice.

    “So, you’re... Shinx, right?”

Shinx stops stalking the blade of grass to look at him, joy evident on its face. Lance offers his own smile back to it, reaching out to scratch the Shinx behind its ears.

“Alright, this won’t be so bad. Especially if I have you for a partner. I’m sure with us both working together, we’ll be an unbeatable team!”

Shinx nods and jumps onto Lance’s shoulder. It lets out what Lance assumes to be an attempt at a roar and if asked, Lance will flat out say that it was the fiercest roar that has ever been heard in the entire Pokemon world.

    Because it totally was.

    “Good, glad you agree.”

And there’s a beat of silence.

    “So, how do we start?”

    Character
    Name: Minato Arisato
    Series: Persona 3
Timeline: Just after clearing the Evil Spirit Club in Persona Q
    Canon Resource Links: wiki entry

    Original Character Background:

Minato's world is, in essence, modern-day Japan. At the start of the game, he comes to Iwatodai, a coastal town with your usual Japanese accoutrement: restaurants, trains, schools, shrines. He is transferred here after a string of previous schools to attend the prestigious Gekkoukan High school - the grounds upon which one of the formative events of his life occurred.

For this is not his first visit to Iwatodai. Many years ago, Gekkoukan High was a laboratory working on Shadows, strange lifeforms which only appear in a 'hidden hour' after midnight. This Dark Hour is only visible to those with the potential to manifest a Persona; everyone else transforms into a giant coffin for the duration. The moon turns a sickly green, all electronics stop working, and the streets become slicked with blood. Unluckily for Minato, it's on the day of his visit as a child that the Shadows break loose and form into Death itself.

Have I mentioned there are robots? Robots are made to fight the Shadows (of course modeled like teenage girls, because Japan). One of these robots, Aigis, chases the Death Shadow to the bridge where Minato is. His parents are killed in the fray, and Aigis, with no other choice, seals Death inside of Minato.

Minato does not remember any of this at the beginning of the game. All he knows is that his parents have died and that he is now here, several years later, attending high school. Thanks to engineering behind the scenes, Mitsuru Kirijo, daughter of the Kirijo Group in charge of the lab that had caused this Shadow accident, drafts him into the Persona-users when he demonstrates his talents against a Shadow attack within the Dark Hour. Minato picks up a fallen comrade's Evoker - a gun-shaped device designed to trigger the trauma required to summon a Persona by putting it to your head and pulling the trigger - and awakens Orpheus within himself.

Summoning so easily the first time means he gets elected as leader for their very special task. Once again, Gekkoukan High is the source of it all. Within the Dark Hour, it transforms into a giant, nightmarish tower called Tartarus - and he and his team-mates must climb it to defeat the Shadows and put an end to the Dark Hour once and for all.

As for his personality, I'm mostly basing it off a mix of his movie character and in-game choices. As one might imagine, losing his parents at a young age and being shuttled from relative to relative, dorm to dorm, has left him with a deep sense of apathy and depression. He makes an efficient leader because, by his own words, he doesn't care if he lives or dies. We see as the movies progress, though, that this depression is matched by a deep, powerful yearning for 'bonds'. He might not show it with expression or words, but he cares deeply for others and spends most of his time trying to help them with their problems and spend time with them.

I mix in the general contents of the game for flavour here, like his clubs, who he chooses to spend time with, and so on. The way quests are structured and his portrayal in the movie gives him a very passive vibe. If someone asks him to do something, he'll do it, because he doesn't care either way; conversely, if not pushed to do anything, he'll just while away his days wandering about. Perfect for the Pokemon world.

    Personality:

One thing first: in gameplay terms, Minato's personality can be whatever you want to be thanks to the wonderful world of silent protagonists. He can be a player and be banging five girls and a robot at once, he can shove his nose in a book and never talk to anyone, he can exclusively keep the company of alcoholic monks and feed cats in alleyways. All of that is fluid and up to the interpretation of the player. What we can incontrovertibly say about him, however, is what we see in the manga, movie, and game themselves.

What that boils down to is that Minato is a pretty quiet dude. At the tender age of six, Minato had a very bad time: the supernatural hidden time known as the Dark Hour occurred while he was with his parents on a bridge. Death, having escaped from a lab with a robot sent to eliminate it in hot pursuit, rampaged and ended up killing his parents. As only those with the potential for a Persona can see this time, the young Minato was forced to watch as this horror cruelly orphaned him - and, with no other option available to the robot, Aigis, Death was sealed inside of his body.

The consequences of this are what you'd expect them to be. Being orphaned so young, Minato withdraws into himself, pushed around from foster home to foster home until eventually ending up back in Iwatodai, the scene of his parents' death, ten years later, when the events of the game take place. Withdrawn and reserved, he prefers to observe others and keep to himself, only speaking when spoken to. He busies himself with listening to music and food, even letting his academics slide. The recent movie furthers amplifies this intense apathy by showing how little he cares about life and death, especially his own, going a ways to explain how eagerly he rushes into battle against the horrific Shadows. He grows, of course, through the tight bonds of SEES and the family atmosphere of the dorm, but some things are not quite so easy to change.

This is not to say that he is a totally apathetic blank slate. Being so quiet and observant also means that he is extremely thoughtful and loyal to his friends. Once again, it's up to the player as to whether Minato pursues his Social Links - bonds of friendship that power up his Personas for battle - for selfish or altruistic means. But still we see him gently coach his friends through their problems with endless patience and insight, ready for them to lean on him no matter how much of a burden it places on his already overloaded shoulders. Though he doesn't express or talk about it, Minato cares fiercely about his friends, literally risking his life for them.

There are other, smaller facets. He is always tired. He can eat like a man with six stomachs. Even to his closest friends, he still doesn't talk about himself if he can help it. But in the end, whole of the kid is basically what you see: quiet, kind, largely apathetic towards everything that is not his friends, and entirely prepared to carry the burden of saving the world on his shoulders.

It took a transfer like this for Minato to realise he'd lived pretty much his whole life in urban settings. He had been a little ill at ease ever since coming to in New Bark Town - yet another weird alternate dimension in his list of weird alternate dimensions - and the rustic nature of everything was what struck him the most. He hadn't even really pondered it until finally hitting Goldenrod City. Once there was firm roads under his feet again, he breathed a sigh of relief he hadn't realised he'd been holding, surrounded once again by tall towers and bustling streets.

The world was interesting, strange and dangerous. It hadn't been so long before this that he'd been wandering through caves, villages and forests. Standing here, on the sidewalk waiting for a break in the traffic, he suddenly became self-aware of the dirt of the journey on him. He brushed it off as he waited, attempting to straighten his jacket and hair to some small level of respectability.

This was much less important than his Pokemon. They'd taken a beating in Ilex Forest and, even in their balls, he could sense their injuries. It wasn't so different from Personas, really - save for the small matter of them being actual wild animals instead of reflections of his soul swirling around inside his brain. Either way,the Pokemon Centre was the first priority - then a comfortable chair and an inhumanly large amount of pastries and coffee. He turned towards the next approaching person.

    "Ah, excuse me. I --"

And they walked straight past. Minato went blank for a minute, even his mild level of emotion leaving his face, and recovered from that easily. It was a big city, after all. People were busier. That, too, didn't really matter either way. He pushed down the natural urge to not ask for help and just wander until he found it. SEES weren't here, but that didn't mean his bonds meant nothing. He just had to try a little. He brushed himself off again, just to be sure he didn't look entirely like an insane wilderness person, and raised a hand to flag down the next likely person travelling along.

"Excuse me. Where's the Pokemon Centre from here?"

    Character
    Name: Hunk
    Series: Voltron: Legendary Defender
    Timeline: End of Episode 11
Canon Resource Links: Wikia; official bio

    Personality:
The gentle giant goofball of the bunch and the left leg of Voltron, Hunk is as sweet as he is round (that is to say: quite a bit). His problems have always included caring too much and too deeply, but they haven't gotten him into too much trouble (yet)--unless you count becoming a Paladin (or a pilot) of Voltron just because he snuck out one night during "team bonding" shenanigans. Besides fighting aliens in space, he doesn't like the idea of fighting, verbally or violently at all. He'll be the first one to mediate a situation, hold someone back, or try to talk logic into all parties in the hopes of finding peace before using his strength.

And strength--physically--is actually one of his strong suits. Despite the pudginess, he's surrounded by a core of solid muscle, able to lift hundreds of pounds pretty easily. He can pick up his friends with ease, can give piggyback rides, and tends to use it more towards moving and shifting large things than anything else. Outside of that, he's surprisingly cautious. His movements are careful and calculated to avoid from bumping into others or hitting anyone, and he uses that precision touch to help with making or building technology. Back in school, at the Garrison, where young cadets are trained to be space pilots, Hunk's main role on the teams is an engineer, and for good reason. He's great with science and physics.

Hunk is also ridiculously observant, nearly always paying attention to situations. He tends to notice minor details or strange happenstance, which has come in handy more than once. During a particularly bad encounter when they'd run across two aliens in need of assistance from a broken ship--turns out, it was a trap--Hunk noticed something strange with the repairs given the pieces requested and the placement of them on the vessel, something his other teammates weren't aware of. He earned himself ranting rights once the team discovered that they'd been had, as he'd known something was wrong from the start. He's also a great analyst on the battle field, tending to take in some details to ask about when they're up against some creature to fight.

But outside of that, he's also usually one of the first to know if a friend's having a bad day, and usually has a checklist of things to do to make it better. Hunk is very much a caring friend, and he always wants to make sure everyone's doing good. He loves his friends, even the ones reluctant to his hugs, and he keeps an eye on them to keep them in good spirits. He's friends with Lance, whom he's known for quite a while, and while Lance is loud and exuberant and makes way too many bad decisions, he's always the first person to get dragged on an adventure or to encourage his really terrible insults. He knows Lance always has his back, but in turn, he does the same. Pidge, the newest one of their team at school (you know, before the adventures into space hijinks), intrigues him with technology and research, but being the youngest with such a strong motivator to stay on the team as well, Hunk does his best to be nothing but supportive and watchful. He even finds out the secret Pidge has been keeping early in, but feels no need to spill; but with Pidge being almost as mischievous as Lance, Hunk always finds himself at risk of getting caught doing something.

He loves food, and he loves to eat. During carefree afternoons when he's got free time, if he's not tinkering with electronics, he'll smuggle in a second lunch. He even spends time with Coran, the ship's mechanic and the Princess's right hand man, fiddling around with the unfamiliar foods on the ship in the hopes of making something that tastes more... earthy. He even gives Coran's strange-looking and normally stinky items a chance--or rather, he tries. While his stomach doesn't get him as airsick in space as it has during the early days of Voltron (and every single simulator at school if it wasn't smooth), it's still rather sensitive at times.

He also harbors a crush on a young alien named Shay. Outside of just enjoying her presence upon speaking with her, he feels a drive to show her happiness. Shay and her people are one of Hunk's biggest motivators fo staying with Voltron and for fighting to save the universe. He wants to stop Galra, the legion terrorizing space, because he doesn't want to see more people who grew up as Shay did, living underground and slaving away every day for the Galra. The Galra had enslaved her people for a long time, and it isn't a common occurrence for them at all. Hunk wants to put an end to it. Shay had had one request--she wanted to see what the sky looked like, wanted to feel wind even on her broken planet, and Hunk's motivation had been set. He fights in part just for her. She'd been captured at one point, and he spent a short while afterward hastily urging the rest of the paladins to rush on ahead to save her, despite the fact that they'd needed to assist others as well. Knowing she's safe now is a comfort to him, but he plans on fighting to make sure they stay safe.

"No, you already had like half the bag!"

While most trainers had their pokemon securely in their pokeballs or cooperating with them, taking them on adventures or battling in the wonderful pleasant fall weather, Hunk found himself at an impasse of crunchy proportions. He'd opted to spend the afternoon reading and on a picnic with his Sandshrew, enjoying the weather outside, and had taken a few snacks to share along the beachy waterside. His Sandshrew, a little explorer, liked just burrowing for a while, hence their afternoon--an afternoon of digging through the ground and playing weird games of peek-a-boo. But when he realized that his pokemon was the one thing that rivaled his snacking habits... He knew he was in trouble.

Scooping up the little wiggling monster in one arm, he held it back from the shelf and sighed.

"Come on, Amber, you gotta stop fighting me on this. You're gonna get fatter than a Snorlax!"

Which was actually a little ironic, coming from him. The pokemon wiggled, frowning up at him, as if he could get his trainer to change his mind by mere pity. Hunk, ever the responsible owner, had read that it probably was safest to keep pokemon to a strict poke-foods diet, to prevent unnecessary complications or sicknesses, much like a regular dog or cat to him, but his little pokemon had other ideas in mind. Also known as Hunk's favorite potato chips.

The little creature wiggles more, tail swinging about and smacking Hunk's leg. He already had bruises from yesterday, from this exact same thing.

The sad thing though--he was weak to that woeful gaze, those deep, black eyes surrounded by scales, giving him the saddest stare and the most pitiful of whines.

    "Shreeww...."

"Okay, fine! Only two bags, okay?!"

But as he grabbed for them, trying to maneuver them into the basket before Amber actually snatched one to eat right then, the Sandshrew's tail swished back behind him, and right into the shelf.

...and knocked it over. Hunk didn't even have time to turn around. Wincing, he just watched the shelf tilt, holding his pokemon a little closer to him.

"S-sorry? I, uh... I can clean that up?"

    Character
    Name:Angel
    Series:Borderlands
    Timeline:Immediately post-death
Canon Resource Links: Information regarding Angel herself can be found here, while information regarding her former abilities as a siren can be found here. While not relevant to her character in VR, it gives insight to why Jack needed her abilities so badly.

What both wiki pages lack is a more detailed description of her history with Handsome Jack, her father. Angel was abused by him in what appears to have been prior to the events of the series (as her voice is presented as far younger in this audio log. Angel also hints at his manipulation during the course of her death battle, saying, “That’s how he works – he’ll try to guilt you to make you think it’s your fault. Don’t listen.” In short, the wiki article misses the desperation Angel felt and just how willingly she accepted death.

Personality: Angel began her time in the Borderlands universe as a pawn, a tool used by Handsome Jack to reach his goals. Under Jack’s eye, and trapped in the prison that would slowly become her death chamber, she had little agency of her own. Angel was driven by guilt, presumably over her mother’s death, and manipulated into believing that her father wanted what was best for both her and Pandora. With no other option, and no one else to turn to,she had no choice but to listen to Jack.

On the surface, Angel is an incredibly helpful. Whether or not it comes from her abilities, or perhaps from acquired knowledge, her experience with technology allows her to quickly unlock doors and allow for her allies to swiftly navigate the wilds of Pandora. Her days on Pandora usually consisted of helping wayward Vault Hunters and other souls on their missions. While Angel certainly does consider herself to be helpful in many ways, much of the work she did was far from selfless. Her guidance was a facade, one to further the goals of both her father and Hyperion.

Though she had no other options, she still holds herself accountable for what she did. Her machinations led to a great many deaths, many of which happened to those she might have considered her friends.

While it would be perfectly reasonable for Angel to excuse her behavior, at least given her lack of options, never once has she done so. It can be surmised that the same guilty conscience that kept her from refusing Jack is what led her to turn on him. In the end, Angel gave her life to make up for the damage she had caused by perpetuating his rise to power.

In spite of the trauma she has endured, there is still a level of childlike innocence to Angel, and an ability to see the positives in most anyone. While most of Pandora loathes the robot Claptrap, she considers him a “funny little robot.” Though she makes a few jabs at Scooter, she deeply respects his talents.

Despite her meek nature at times, and playful demeanor in others, when it comes down to it, Angel is also firm and unshakeable when she needs to be. During the last few minutes of her life, she does not hesitate to put Roland into his place, insisting he finish his duties and end her life. She is stalwart in the face of her death.

In speaking, even during times out from beneath Jack’s thumb, Angel still feels his influence. She often curbs her tongue, avoiding swearing and correcting herself whenever one does manage to make its way out. It is only fitting then that Angel’s final act of rebellion happened to be calling her father an asshole.

In the end, Angel's most prominent trait is her strength. Despite his every effort to manipulate Angel, to coerce her to his side and to make her believe in his genocidal wrath, Angel stood strong. Though she may have done a great deal of things she would come to regret, in the end, she died for what she thought was right.

Angel was strong enough to face death itself.

Victory Road Sample: It took Angel only a few minutes to become tired, and a few more for her stomach to point out that it very likely hadn’t been filled in months. Her sigh was one of exasperation, cursing the disconnect between her frail body and the desperation of her mind. She’d read once that adrenaline could fuel the body in borderline inhuman ways. So much for that helping her out.

When it became clear that her body couldn’t press any further, Angel plopped down beneath a tree. Her head came to a rest against the bark, rough against her scalp, but not enough to push her to move any further. It doesn’t take long for Mareep to crawl into her lap, her baa becoming pleased.

It doesn’t take either of them long to drift off.

The next thing Angel felt was a sharp sensation of a hoof digging into her. Angel’s eyes flew open, just in time to see Mareep leap from her lap, landing directly in front of an approaching bird. The sheep issued a growl, attempting to warn off the creature, but it did no good. The bird lunged, striking Mareep hard in the side. Mareep yelped, jumping back, before lunging forward and slamming her entire body against the bird.

Dropping back, the feathered monster began kicking dust up. Mareep protested with a small cry, but charged through anyways, just barely catching the bird as it leapt away.

Angel stood, moving over to the scuffle. She plunged her hands in between them, attempting to scoop up Mareep before the fight progressed any further. The bird leapt at her hands, however, its beak dragging along her arm, ripping into the flesh there, before connecting with Mareep. With a yelp, Angel stepped back, while Mareep turned to the bird with another growl. The wool on her back crackled threateningly, the only warning before a wave of electricity rolled off of her, connecting with the bird and stilling it in place.

Mari!, the sheep cried, turning tail and running in another direction. Just as she had only a few hours earlier, Mareep turned her head back, urging Angel to follow. With a glance at her scratched arm and one at the bird, Angel followed after.

So much for this being an easy journey.

    Name: Jean Kirschtein
    Series: Attack on Titan
Timeline: During the Female Titan arc, after the Forest of Big Trees but before the Battle at Sina
Canon Resource Links: Comprehensive, spoiler-filled wiki

    Personality:
For someone meeting Jean for the first time, they’d see a brash, arrogant young man without a care in the world. Jean presents himself as someone who has it together, someone who is very good at what he does and knows it, someone with no time for those who can’t keep up with him. He’d seem unhelpful, almost condescending, and too focused on his own goals to pay much attention to anyone else. In addition, he’d have no problem telling a stranger about his goals and why they are the only ones that make sense, going so far as to ridicule the other person’s ideas if they didn’t fall in line with his own.

However, if anyone stays past that first meeting and the poor introductions and got to know him better, another side of Jean would emerge. He never gets particularly better at working in a group, and his overly blunt personality would still cause conflicts, but he would also begin to show that he does, in fact, care about those around him. He becomes more patient with those whose ability levels are not on his own, and recognizes that some people have different skill sets that are equally valuable (this is especially the case with Armin Arlert, with whom he forms a grudging friendship). He’s willing to talk ideas and strategies through, particularly on the battlefield, listening to other’s ideas and formulating theories with them.

This is also where his leadership abilities would start to emerge. He’s capable of taking in a situation on the field and assessing it, coming to a conclusion about what to do. He’s also not afraid to leap right in and lead those following him directly, no armchair soldiering for him. He leads by example, and here his brashness and almost foolish bravery work for him, inspiring others to follow his example. However, he’s not wasteful or uncaring about other’s lives, showing moments of weakness and conflict when faced with horrible choices. These are only moments, though, and he’s able to push past them and do what needs to be done.

He doesn’t forget about these awful choices, though. There is a side of himself that he shows only to his closest friend, Marco. This Jean is almost unrecognizable from first impression Jean: he’s quiet, contemplative, and has serious self-doubt about his abilities. He admits his doubts to Marco, giving his friend a glimpse of his internal conflict, and when Marco’s response is less than flattering and probably not what Jean wants to hear (although it is also very honest and a very accurate assessment), Jean listens quietly and takes what Marco tells him under advisement, rather than lashing out. When he trusts someone and is comfortable about them, Jean isn’t as afraid to be vulnerable and honest with them, even though it’s difficult for him. Moreover, he’s haunted by the things he’s done, by the lives that have been lost under his command, and we get the impression this is something he’ll be thinking about for a long time.

Unfortunately, Jean loses that one close relationship when Marco dies, and it’s only then that we see the Jean he never shows anyone else. If Jean was haunted by the other deaths under his command, Marco’s is the most difficult for him to process. We get the impression that the concept of home is not a place for Jean (he seemed largely indifferent to Trost getting invaded by titans, despite that being his home district), but rather a person. Marco dying is the same as Jean losing his home, and he’s stunned and almost broken by it. This is a wound he’ll be carrying with him for a long time, possibly the rest of his life.

One of the things that comes from Marco’s death is Jean’s decision to join the Survey Corps. This is something none of the other trainees understand, and they seem a bit foggy on the idea even after Jean does an admitted half-assed job explaining his reasoning. He won’t tell them the real reason: before he died, Marco told him that he knew Jean would choose the right thing, and in this case, joining the Survey Corps is the right thing to do. Moreover, during the induction ceremony where he officially joins, Jean thinks to himself “Don’t make me hate myself any more than I already do,” and pictures his friends dying at the hands of the titans. He’s visibly shaking during the entire ceremony, obviously terrified and wracked with guilt, but he joins anyway. Marco was right: he chose the right thing to do in the end, even if it went against all his stated intentions and gut instincts.

This is a huge turning point for Jean, and the beginning of him growing up and coming into his own. He’s still arrogant and blunt after this, but it’s toned down. He’s more patient, more willing to listen to others, and he begins to embrace his natural leadership abilities. He still fights with Eren and runs off on his own agendas when faced with authority he doesn’t recognize, but he also takes being in the Survey Corps seriously, putting himself in danger to support the Corps and obeying Commander Erwin with a minimum of fuss. He’s maturing, in other words, and starting to turn into the man he’ll one day become.

Okay, seriously, this is just stupid.

[For someone who had never seen a camera or a video until fairly recently, Jean has taken to both rather quickly. He always did enjoy fooling around with things and learning about them through experimentation, and while the angle of the camera is distinctly unflattering—somehow stretching his long face out even longer while simultaneously giving him six chins—the sheer indignation in his eyes comes across perfectly.]

Everyone else gets something cute, or useful, or sweet or whatever. And I get this.

[The camera swings around, jittering wildly out of control for a moment, and then focuses on a round, red and white ball with glaring eyes. The ball’s eyes narrow further when it realizes the camera is on it, and it lunges forward with a crackling sound. Jean yelps and jumps backwards, making the camera swing wildly for a moment.]

    See! He’s crazy!

[The Voltorb crackles ominously but doesn’t try to come any closer, watching Jean from where it hovers.]

So how am I supposed to make friends with this thing? Because that’s what we’re supposed to do, right? Make friends with them?

[Jean sounds almost condescending about the idea of befriending the Pokemon. Anyone listening very closely might notice how his voice is trembling the tiniest bit, betraying all his uncertainty that he will vehemently deny if called on it. His hand stretches into view, pale with callouses across the palm, and he extends it towards the Voltorb.]

You want to be friends, asshole?

[The Voltorb lunges forward again, and the camera falls to the ground, pointing upwards towards the sky, capturing cheery blue and recording the sounds of electricity crackling and Jean shouting.]

    Character
    Name: Manaka Sajyou
    Series: Fate/Prototype
Timeline: After her death, while she is still dormant ("dreaming") inside the Grail
    Canon Resource Links: Link

    Personality:
Much of the time, Manaka behaves like a typical, if somewhat precocious, young girl. However, in reality, the idea that she is simply a normal child couldn't be further from the truth. More than anything, Manaka is an extremely warped person. Throughout her entire life, she has been connected to "the Root," something that is most simply described as being the center of all creation; later, at the time of her "death," she was submerged in something containing all of humanity's evil desires. Obviously, neither of these things is going to produce a person with a normal outlook on life!

First and foremost, she is self-centered to the extreme. While she can see and understands other people's wants, she doesn't factor them into her behavior when taking action, and she's perfectly willing to toss aside anyone who comes between her and her goals, no matter what they may mean to her. It isn't that she feels nothing for others; it's just that her desires far outweigh the worth of most people in her mind. For example, in canon, she has expressed a willingness to harm or kill both her sister (whom she has explicitly said she loves) and the closest thing she has to a friend—and acted on it, in both cases.

However, despite this, she's stated to be an "innocent monster" that holds no malice toward others, and it's true that her actions weren't born from hate or vengeance or any negative feeling at all. Having been constantly aware of the cycle of death and rebirth since infancy, Manaka simply doesn't see the value of a life in the way that most people do, and doesn't understand basic morals others take for granted, such as the idea that killing is wrong. Her callousness comes from a skewed perspective, rather than cruelty.

The only exception to the above is her Saber. She's described as having been "irreparably warped" by her love for him, and it's a hard statement to argue with, seeing as that love has led to her massacring dozens of people without batting an eye. In her mind, he is the most important thing in the universe. She would happily sacrifice every other life on the planet for his sake—and fully intends to do so, given that the action she sees as the fulfillment of his wishes is also one that will consume and extinguish all human life. Retaliating against someone she perceives as having "endangered" Saber is the only time she is seen acting out in anger, too.

She also appears to hold some general level of ennui directed at life, thanks to her connection to the Root. It doesn't come across in her demeanor—she's peppy and upbeat—but even so, it appears as a reoccurring theme in her thoughts and actions. When her father mentions wanting to use the Holy Grail as a means to connect to the Root, she brushes his desire aside as "boring." In the Fate/Labyrinth sidestory, because she is unable to experience surprise any other way, she purposefully induces in herself a special sort of dream. Unsurprisingly, being able to look inside something that houses everything that ever has existed and everything that ever will has made her bored.

In the aftermath of her death, Manaka's innocence has become somewhat warped, a twisted version of what it was originally. While she is still devoid of malice, and still doesn't grasp the idea of moral absolutes, she has gained an intimate understanding of the ugliest of human desires. So, while she doesn't precisely empathize with them, she can speak on them in depth, if prompted. She also has a tendency to view no human as morally better than another, and is unlikely to pass judgment on a person's moral failures, given that she views such dark desires as simply an unpleasant but undeniable part of the human heart.

Her concept of and expressions of love have also been distorted. Following her death at Saber's hands, she seems to have twisted the concepts of violence, death, and love into a single inseparable knot. When speaking of her happiness at the thought of seeing Saber again, she uses gory metaphors, describing the feeling as being one like "[her] insides will fall out of her stomach"; conversely, when speaking of being impaled, she does so in a way that is evocative of sexual intercourse.

As a note, though Manaka's outward manner is often childish, her mental age is a bit more complicated. This can be seen in one of the one-shot comics published in the second official Fate/Prototype artbook, in which she initially behaves very much like a young girl when around others, only to switch to a more adult manner of speaking when alone. How she chooses to present herself when is dependent on whim and the surrounding circumstances; while she generally acts the age she appears to be, she may be more open about her true colors around people she feels some level of connection with.

    Affiliation: Team Rocket
Starter: Woobat (lvl 5) & Litwick (lvl 15); Litwick is similar to Manaka in that it appears to be cute and harmless on the outside, but is actually much darker in nature. Additionally, its type reflects Manaka's own death and resurrection, as well as the fact that this wouldn't be the first time Manaka has undertaken a partnership with a monster that feeds on the life force of others.
    Password: Atomic fireball

RP Sample: CW: Blood/Gore/Casual Murder Talk (I'm sorry, this is... the only recent thread I have for her. She won't be anywhere near as awful within the setting, since she'll have no motivation to be!)

Manaka dreamed often, but it didn't take her long to realize that this was something else entirely. It was like coming out from under anesthesia, only to find that someone had removed one of her arms while she slept: disorienting, and a little alarming as she tried to flail around with something that wasn't there. She couldn't feel the Root, or the Beast. Her magic circuits were gone, and even the place where Saber's blade had pierced her—

But as that single, wild moment of shock faded, the feeling was replaced by something else entirely: Awe.

She had jolted upward, launching herself out of the Rocket dormitory bed she'd found herself in—but then, in the next moment, she froze. Her gaze dropped downward, and she flexed her fingers, turning her palms back and forth like she'd never seen her own hands before in her life. Maybe she hadn't—at least, she'd never seen them like this, through a normal person's eyes.

Still half-dazed, she lifted her head to scan the room she had found herself in. It wasn't a very exciting room, impersonal and sterile, but that didn't stop the niggling feeling that there was more to it than that. How could there not be? For Manaka to find herself here, it must have been something special.

Finally, her eyes fell on what seemed to be the only objects of note in the room: A pair of strange orbs made of a material she couldn't identify at a glance, half white and half a bright red. Padding toward the nightstand they were situated on, she picked up the one closest to her, her thumb giving the button in its center a swift click. And...

And whatever she had been expecting, it wasn't the stream of light that leaped free as the lid swung open. Nor was it the way that light solidified into what seemed to be a living candle, its nubby little arms lifting proudly as it declared, "Lit! Lit!"

Manaka gasped, her entire expression lighting up at the sight—a reaction that seemed to please the creature, what with the little twirl it performed in reply. "Wow...! You're so cute!" she squealed, half-skipping to clear the distance between herself and her new friend. "Were you left here to wait for me?"

"Wick," it chirped, and if there was any doubt that had been an affirmative, it followed up the statement with a nod.

That earned another coo from Manaka. "Mm! I hope you weren't alone for too long." Then, cupping her hands, she lifted them in front of herself, offering the candle a place to sit. It complied, wax surprisingly cool to the touch as it settled itself in her palms. "Do you have a name, Mr. Candle?"

    "Lit! Wick!"

"Ah, I guess that's all you can say..." Trailing off, Manaka mulled over the implications of that for a moment. Then, she shrugged, her expression returning to that beaming smile a second later. "I'll figure out something cute to call you myself! For now, can you show me where I am?"
