    Character
    Name: Dave Strider
    Series: Homestuck Epilogues
    Timeline: End of Candy
Canon Resource Links: MSPA wiki link

    Personality:
Dave Strider has some issues. Between the loss of hope, the stress of his home life, and the trauma of losing his world, he has had difficulty growing and connecting. He has difficulty admitting his feelings to himself and others.

Like everyone, his personality was formed by the people, or in this case, person he grew up with. His Bro, who was actually more his father, had intended to make him stronger through extreme trials. And while it did do that, it also left him with some pretty bad emotional wounds. Dave does care about others' opinion of him, which is why he goes to such lengths to posture as he does.. Although he's clever and witty, he also has enormous emotional blind spots.

He isn't over any of his trauma in any real way. He can verbalize that he shouldn't have certain hang ups, and understands the difference between people, but he can't help but still react in that way. He cares so much about what other people think of him because he is self-centered, though he probably doesn't realize it.

He flops between self-denial and self-acceptance, but he's really good at ignoring his own feelings. He fears change and death, but locks all of that up tight.

Dave Strider's main means of communication is endless rambling about his own thoughts and sarcastic or obtuse jokes about whatever is at hand both online and in person. When he talks to himself, he speaks in a quiet mumble and remarks that it brings him comfort .When he's online he will just leaves message after message into an empty window. His manner of speaking is pretty crude and he can’t seem to actually influence the course of anything he’s actually saying. He tries to keep a flat affect and too-cool posturing that is blown the absolute moment he opens his mouth.

He is interested in self-expression through art, politics, and as much as he acts like heroism has been ruined for him, he does not actually shy away from it. In spite of this, he's also clearly pretty depressed with his lifestyle. He doesn't really go outside, he compares himself with an alternate timeline version of himself that has arguably accomplished much more, and he spends all of his time around someone that he's determined that he's not allowed to have or people that have made his choices for him plus he's fine locking himself into difficult relationships.

He married a longtime girlfriend only because it seemed like he should. He didn't even choose to be with her, she just decided it and he didn't reject it loudly enough. What's worse is that he respects people's choices to the point that it infringes on his own happiness. He's swayed by others and cares what they think. He allows people to push him around. He's really cagey about his sexuality even though no one cares but him. He distanced himself from his closest friend while remaining in close quarters. He lost what was likely the love of his life in the process to the ongoing war and political strife.

He's a sensitive guy, which feeds into all of it. He can handle a lot, up until the moment he can't and loses his shit. This does show that the cool front is simply just that, with everything above directly below the surface.

Starter: Type:Null. This Pokémon was created in a lab and is controlled by others in a way that is very poetic for Dave himself. I also look forward to the idea of him having to take on a burden that is out of his mreans of control and kind of an outsider the way he is. I want him to grow close to it though, and reconcile its imperfections along with his own.

Also it looks like a poorly designed chimera so that's totally on brand. If I can choose, as a Sivally, it would be a Ghost Type.

Victory Road Sample: After the weird weekend that Dave was not entirely clear that was both very temporary and had the serious potential to strand him like an idiot, he realizes that he has to swallow his pride and concede both of these things. Worse, he has to ask someone to rescue him.

He's got very little money, a fresh starter that cannot even hope to stand up to even the most casual of encounters with whatever roided out zubat lay in wait for him. In fact, he's mostly just trying not to repeat that exact humiliating beating he took not twenty minutes ago. He sucks up his pride as he attempts to plan what he wants to say to everyone, but fails.

good morning everyone with a lick of sense
or at least maybe a couple people who actually played this game as a kid
seems ive woken up to a big bowl of cinnamon toast consequences
it seems i can no longer fly
    and also i am broke
but worst of all im on an island just waiting to get my ass kicked by the sort of pokemon you wouldnt even want the card of
i already got so many bites on me im just waiting to turn into the stupidest vampire ever
    so anyway
im apparently on the sevii islands so if someone could help a bro out so i can get on with my mission id be really super grateful

Dave sends that all into the ether with a cringe hidden behind his sunglasses. He looks up at the sky, out towards the sand, and sits his ass down on a rock to wait. He looks at the band-aids all up and down his arms from the zubat run-in. He shudders to think what could have happened if it was that big rock snake one or that other snake one that was more snake looking. Maybe he should start boning up on his sorely lacking pokemon knowledge.

However, please do not use this section as a full history section unless your canon is ridiculously obscure. Personality: All things considered, Chloe hasn't lived the easiest of lives. Because of this, she isn't easy to get along with, either. The two biggest factors in Chloe's life that sent it all spiraling downhill is the death of her dad as well as her best friend, Max, moving away shortly after. Without Max there to keep her from making bad decisions, Chloe inevitably closed herself off and started to act out in various way, which created a strain on her relationship with her mother and everyone else around her.

She's angry because her father died, she's angry because her mother married someone she doesn't get along with and she's angry because she's alone. Her unhappiness at home is a big part of what drives her down the path of recklessness. She's resentful that her mother remarried, much less to David Madsen of all people. She and David have an awful, antagonistic relationship and Chloe often refers to him as "stepdouche". She has no respect for him at all and actively antagonizes him whenever she gets the chance.

Her relationship with her mother is better though- she loves her mom, even if she's terrible at showing it and often causes her mother more grief than she intends. It's just hard, y'know, when you have so much anger and resentment build up. She tries to distance her mom from her shenanigans as much as possible, but when you get into as much trouble as Chloe does, it's not an easy feat.

On the outside, it all looks like typical teenage rebelliousness. Chloe likes to spend her free time drinking, smoking up or just generally having a good time, so she isn't angry or resentful all the time- in her down time, she enjoys music, going to concerts, having a good time and chilling with people. Some would say she can be funny, witty and overall a chill person to hang out with. She's just had the misfortune of falling in with the Wrong Crowd and as a result, she's gotten into some pretty bad situations.

She's been in trouble for vandalism, drug use, violence and theft and as a result she's been expelled from Blackwell Academy because of it; though her abysmal GPA of 1.7 probably had a lot to do with it as well- which is hilarious, because it's revealed in "Before The Storm" that she's actually good at science and potentially other subjects, she just doesn't give enough of a shit to go to school. So she's smart, it just doesn't necessarily show because she's too busy sticking it to the man.

There was one good thing about her going to Blackwell though; she met Rachel Amber. Rachel was essentially Chloe's rock and savior. It's stated by Chloe that Rachel saved her life, helped keep her from spiraling too far out of control. Rachel was there for her when no one else was, Chloe immediately felt a connection to her and for the longest time, Rachel was the only good thing in her life. For better and worse, she's had a large influence on Chloe's life right down to Chloe's signature "hella" that she picked up from Rachel.

Needless to say, Rachel disappearing really did a number on Chloe. It's made it hard for her to be optimistic or happy, she honestly feels lost without her, just the same she did with Max.

When Max comes back into her life, it's obvious from the start that despite how happy Chloe is to see her, she holds some anger and resentment towards her for leaving and not keeping in touch. They were best friends, after all. She's angry and hurt and she lets Max know, because she isn't the type to hide her anger or hold her tongue even when it comes to friends.

That's the one thing that drives people away from Chloe and gets her in trouble the most- her mouth. She isn't afraid to speak her mind, nor does she think through the ramifications of her actions or her words and she can be downright reckless. At a few points in the game, Max has to rewind time because Chloe has gotten herself in trouble, either physically or verbally because she's picked a fight when she shouldn't.

Don't think she doesn't love Max, though- as far as she's concerned, having Max back is the best thing to happen to her. For better or for worse, they both have each other's back. To get an idea of how much she cares for and values Max, it's revealed in "Before the Storm" that Chloe regularly wrote letters to Max that she wouldn't send, because she got tired of Max never writing her back. But in spite of that, she'd always said she would gladly welcome Max back without a second thought.

Chloe, for all of her faults, is a good friend. Once she cares about someone, there isn't anything she won't do for them- it's not an exaggeration to say she would kill for them. When finding out that Rachel's been murdered, Chloe is at first so grief stricken that she can't do anything but sob. When she recovers, she's out for blood and doesn't even think twice before she's rushing off to literally go kill the person she thinks is responsible for it. Chloe doesn't play around.

Adding to that, Chloe is resourceful and smart. It's with her help that they uncover the mystery behind Rachel's disappearance, and while she might not have the powers Max does, she's good at lying and convincing people when she needs to- or outright arguing with them, honestly. In "Before the Storm", it's often Chloe's talent at arguing that gets her what she wants. While it gets her in trouble, it also benefits her occasionally.

That's why it's good that she has Max in her life- Max keeps her from going overboard or doing anything too reckless, which Chloe sometimes takes for granted. She's always quick to encourage Max to use her powers, never once thinking of the consequences no matter how many times Max tries to tell her that they can't rely on them.

Over the course of the game, Chloe comes to realize just how much she cares about Max and how good she's been to her. It all comes to a head when they both realize that Chloe needs to die in order to set things right in Arcadia Bay. She selflessly accepts the fact and even admits to her wrongdoings, her shitty behavior towards her parents and shows remorse for it all. But above it all, she loves Max and doesn't want Max to ever forget her.

All in all, Chloe is unpredictable, wild, reckless, always ready to do stupid shit for fun or profit, occasionally selfish; the list goes on. She's just very much the type of person who relies on others a little too much, whether she realizes it or not. It's not that she's a bad person, she just makes a lot of mistakes.

    Character
    Name: Kiri
    Series: Critical Role, campaign 2
    Timeline: Post Episode 25
Canon Resource Links: At the Critical Role wiki

Personality: The first thing to know about Kiri is that she's quite young (4 chronological years, and about the size of a 7-10 year old) and comes from a species that's been cursed to be incapable of verbal communication. While Kenku can write, and Kiri herself has learned how, no Kenku can actually talk. They're limited to mimicking phrases. However, like how they are able to communicate through interpreting body language and the chirps/whistles/crows they're limited to making without the mimicking, they can also learn to recombine learned phrases in order to be somewhat understood. Kiri is shown to be very good at this, although there are definitely still hiccups, especially when someone isn't fully aware of her limitations.

In-game, without the curse, she will surely learn how to use spoken language, but it will be a process, and she may well revert to mimicking in times of stress or upset. One of her first developments will be expanding her vocabulary of phrases (we see that in canon, as she's only with the Nein for a few short weeks) and then she's likely to start experimenting with breaking them down into words, and then finally recombining.

Personality-wise, Kiri is very cheerful, energetic, and has a mischievous streak a mile long. Even after a recent attack and near devouring by crocodiles, she warms up pretty quickly to the group, and once assured of her place, welcomes strangers with little to no hesitation. While some very bad things have happened to her, she doesn't dwell on them, and instead throws herself headlong into her new 'family.' This comes back to bite the Nein in the ass when they decide that their occupation is too dangerous and put her in the care of a more stable family. Kiri does come to understand their reasonings, but is very subdued and upset the whole time. (And although she's from before that point in canon, when Jester contacts her again, she's very upset that Jester isn't coming back.)

Her mischief is shown by how she mimics the new acquaintance of the group, Cali. It's definitely a choice on Kiri's part, because she doesn't have to mimic what she hears, and she can take phrases she heard days or weeks ago and re-use them, and confuses poor Cali. Kiri also definitely teases (such as repeating 'get into trouble' when with Caleb), and picks up swearing and other shocking phrases with glee.

The last thing of note about Kiri is that she's incredibly resilient and adaptable. Many adults would have a hard time losing not one, but two families in a very short period while being exposed to traumatic violence and the horrors of war. Kiri does experience negative effects from those experiences, but overall, she bears up well under the pressure. Her last appearance in canon (so far) shows her doing well, amid the damage from an attack on her new home city.

    Character
    Name: Geralt of Rivia
    Series: The Witcher (Netflix)
    Timeline: Post-Rare Species, pre-finding Cirilla
    Canon Resource Links:
    Wiki page

    Personality:
Geralt, the titular witcher of the Witcher series, is a mutant monster hunter who grunts and fucks his way across the Continent, cutting bitches and banging witches.

Witchers are generally regarded by the population at large as dangerous, unfeeling, and barely better than the monsters they're paid to kill. Geralt does little to dissuade anyone of this opinion on his own, as his demeanor is usually taciturn and disagreeable. Couple that with his obviously inhuman features, like his yellow slit-pupil eyes, pale complexion, and white hair, and there are few people who would attempt to get to know the man underneath the mutations.

Though Geralt gives the outward appearance of preferring his solitude, it isn't as simple as it seems. The life of a witcher is a hard and lonely one, as they travel alone due in no small part to prejudice and the fact that people will avoid paying them for their work if they can. The only time that Geralt meets up with his fellow witchers is during the winter, when he returns to Kaer Morhen, the home of the Wolf School. However, he's not as content with this lonely, friendless situation as he's supposed to be, and that can be most clearly seen in his decades-long friendship with Jaskier. Geralt met Jaskier when the bard was eighteen years old and fresh out of Oxenfurt Academy, and despite Geralt's attempts at scaring him off for his own good-- even after punching him in the stomach-- Jaskier decided that he was going to fix this big brute's awful reputation through the power of song and set off with him to travel the Continent as his loyal companion. As Geralt's mutations give him greater strength and endurance than the average human, and he's also on horseback, it would be very easy for him to lose his hanger-on by simply galloping off into the sunset. Considering that he hasn't done that after twenty years, the only reasonable conclusion is that not only does Geralt not mind Jaskier, but he actually likes him. Geralt can sit around in bathtubs and claim that he needs no one as much as he likes, but this is the same man who was abandoned by his mother at six to the horrors of the witcher lifestyle and has named every single horse he's ever owned the same thing. Like, sure Jan, you totally don't have abandonment issues.

Geralt's desire for, but complete inability to successfully articulate, human companionship is readily apparent in his general protectiveness towards his bard companion, which goes beyond the bonds of courtesy, if Geralt would've even cared about something like that. Not only does the witcher protect Jaskier from the standard dangers of the road like monsters and brigands, but he also shields Jaskier from his own poor decisions. Geralt defends Jaskier from cuckolded husbands, angry fathers, and anyone else who happens to take offense at the bard's promiscuity, and does it without payment. Since witchers are notorious for doing nothing without getting coin for it, and Geralt insists more than once that he's not a mercenary for hire, the fact that he's willing to both play bodyguard for Jaskier and do it for free is significant. Geralt's love language is acts of service and with the bard, the best way to show that is to look after the little shit when he gets into trouble, even if Geralt grumbles about it later.

One might think that, after a decade or two of the most popular bard on the Continent singing your praises to turn your reputation from 'that guy we stone whenever he walks into town' to 'the guy we call the White Wolf and literally throw money at', a man might get a swelled head. And while Geralt has plenty of professional pride in his knowledge of monsters, alchemical skills, and general sword-stabby abilities, his actual self-esteem is approximately that of a lemon. The reasons why Geralt has less self-esteem than you could fit in your average thimble are many and varied, but is the end clusterfuck result of parental abandonment, being raised in the witcher lifestyle which is full of intergenerational trauma and whose training system necessitates that 7 out of 10 of all boys die in the first trial to become a witcher, Geralt receiving additional mutagens because he had reacted well to the first set and becoming essentially a mutant among mutants, and society at large's intolerance for non-humans, which means that Geralt's life is dedicated to protecting and serving a population who fears him and would be just as glad to see him dead as the monster that he's saving them from. He envisions no life for himself outside of performing his monster-slaying duties-- Jaskier asks him once what witchers do when they retire, and Geralt's response is that they don't retire, they just get killed by a monster when they get slow. He doesn't allow himself to hope for a better life for himself, because it's useless to hope for something that he'll never get.

Despite the fact that Geralt continually says that he must remain neutral in the affairs of men, he also literally never does that. Years before the start of the show, Geralt earns himself the moniker the Butcher of Blaviken due to his reluctance to get involved; he has the option to aid or stop Renfri, a former princess who is on the warpath to get revenge on the mage Stregobor for his role in labeling her as a mutant and forcing her into exile. Geralt tries to remain neutral in the situation and attempts to convince Renfri to give up her quest for revenge; she refuses, and takes her gang to the Blaviken marketplace to hold everyone there hostage. The witcher intervenes at that point to try to prevent bloodshed, and is forced to kill Renfri and her men. To the townsfolk, it appears that the witcher has butchered them for no reason, and he's run out of town. The pattern of Geralt trying to remain neutral before his conscience forces him to act repeats itself multiple times in the series, for good or ill. Ultimately, Geralt has a difficult time remaining idle, especially in cases of imminent violence, when he could possibly act to prevent it.

While Geralt has a number of noble traits, he also has his fair share of vices. Aside from his cantankerous and crotchety nature, he has the bad habit of falling into broody silences and communicating with grunts rather than using proper language. His temper also gets the best of him sometimes, especially when he’s uncomfortable or stressed, which usually results in him saying cruel or thoughtless things to the people around him. An angry outburst while looking for an insomnia cure, for instance, resulted in a djinn taking Geralt’s demands for Jaskier to shut up as a wish to shut him up permanently. Geralt almost always regrets these outbursts after they occur, but his stubbornness and aversion to admitting that he’s wrong means that he doesn’t directly apologize for them, either. Instead, he tries to make up for his offenses with actions; in the case of Jaskier and the djinn, that took the form of finding the closest sorceress who could fix what the djinn did, and then offering her literally anything to save him. As of the end of season 1, Geralt has yet to make amends with either Jaskier or Yennefer for his actions on the mountain during the Rare Species episode, though, as with other instances of being cruel, he likely regrets it.

He also has the bad tendency of assuming that he knows best, which can result in him making decisions for people even when they don’t want him to. He does this with the djinn wish in the Bottled Appetites episode, making his wish to try to save the sorceress Yennefer even though she doesn’t want him to, and the consequences of this wish taint their romantic relationship from then on. Similarly to this, Geralt hates the concept of Destiny and the idea that he may not be in control of all of his decisions and their outcomes, and actively rails against it for a significant portion of the first season, including when he gets a child by asking for the Law of Surprise as payment after just witnessing how much chaos the Law of Surprise can cause. Unfortunately for him, Destiny is actually a major force in the Witcher series, and any attempts he makes at circumventing or derailing it are doomed to failure.

On the whole, Geralt is a decent man with poor social skills and a terrible job who really just wants to get paid, take a bath, and get some sleep, but keeps getting dragged into Big Problems.

[For what must be the first time since Geralt arrived in this strange new world, he feels like he’s standing on solid ground. He’s dressed in sturdy clothes, all black as is his usual preference, the closest thing that he could get to armor in this place; the weight of a Doublade at his back is so similar to that of the silver and steel swords that he would normally carry for his witchering that he almost can’t tell the difference. The Mudbray that is his newest mount—Roach, of course—grazes nearby, albeit eating dirt rather than grass because this world is insane. He’s stopped questioning it. He’s from fantasy medieval Poland, give his pierogi-eating ass a break.]

[After a few moments of prodding, the device makes a little clicking noise that Geralt has learned means that it’s sending a message. He makes sure that it’s pointing at his face before he speaks.]

I am Geralt of Rivia. A witcher.

[There haven’t been many people who have recognized that term, and it’s been… a strange experience. There have been more times than not that he’s walked through a town and no one has even cursed at him, nevertheless thrown a stone or driven him off. No mothers worry that he'll steal their children.]

I hunt monsters. I am offering this service again, if anyone is in need of it. I can remove any dangerous or troublesome creatures and relocate them, for a fee. Either contact me or the bard, Jaskier.

[He hangs up. Hasn’t quite gotten the hang of phone etiquette, it’s probably fine.]

    Character
Name: Jaskier (birth name: Julian Alfred Pankratz)
    Series: The Witcher (Netflix series)
    Timeline: Post 1x6
Canon Resource Links: Here he is at the Witcher wiki. The show hasn't touched his past yet, but Jaskier uses his birth name in one episode (which is definitely not a commoner name!) and the official website acknowledges the fact he's a viscount, so for now I'm taking the basics from the book backstory: Jaskier was born in a noble family from Lettenhove as Julian Alfred Pankratz, but wanting something more, he left to study art in Oxenfurt University and traveled the Continent with his music afterward.

Personality: It was Queen Calanthe of Cintra that once asked during one of Jaskier's performances: "how much more of this peacocking must I endure?". And sure, that question was asked in the context of her being incredibly annoyed by a myriad of things (aka men), but regardless, her wording is more than accurate: Jaskier is, first and foremost, a peacock. Social, flashy, flamboyant, loud, flirtatious, always hungry for attention, the biggest drama queen you'll ever get to meet. These attributes also make him the classic bard stereotype from D&D: Jaskier is a free wandering soul that wants to captivate the world with his songs and poems and seeks adventure wherever he may find it.

To be more accurate, he seeks to enjoy himself. Jaskier is a lover of the finest things in life: fine food, fine wine, fine clothing, fine art, fine (ahem) company... and most importantly, good stories and exciting experiences. After growing up in a conservative noble house, in what could perhaps even be considered a sheltered rich boy environment, Jaskier has developed a need to see it all. He's incredibly curious and restless, never staying in one place or giving his attention to the same person for too long. After gaining fame thanks to his songs about the witcher Geralt of Rivia, he could probably accept a contract to stay in some of the bests courts of the Continent - yet he chooses to go back to the road, leaving the luxury and lovers he adores so much behind in exchange for meat jerky and sleeping on the ground next to a grumpy swordsman. He complains (or shall we say, whines) about these things every now and then, but he thinks they're a fair price to pay for the thrill of discovery and adventure.

In fact, traveling with Geralt is one of the few constants in his life, a little over twenty years of monster hunts and camping together. This, together with the fact he mentions his ex-girlfriend the Countess de Stael having left him twice, shows that Jaskier isn't completely against committing to someone or something, it just has to be something incredibly special, able to hold his attention for more than a week or even a few days. The other constant is, of course, his music. Jaskier is a poet, graduated from Oxenfurt University, and you can see it in the way he talks. Always a romantic, this witty chatterbox loves to use purple prose in his everyday speech - although he can quickly opt for curses as well, including the f-word! He's an amazing storyteller, managing to keep his audience's attention on him at all times (even with a bad song, as seen in his introductory scene), charming them with sweet nothings and winking at the right moment. He's a charmer through and through, but it's also important to point out that part of the success of his songs is thanks to the way his silver tongue twists some of the details. Respect doesn't make history, he told Geralt once, showing his understanding of the power of words and the impact they may have on people - not for nothing, but he is the one to have fixed the reputation of the White Wolf after all.

This goes hand in hand with the fact he's smarter than he looks, not only because of the already mentioned academic studies, but also emotionally. Jaskier, as the romantic artist he is, wears his heart on his sleeve. His songs may carry some lies in them, but when expressing himself outside his art, he doesn't lie often - he's an open book. If you don't know how he's feeling, don't worry, he'll let you know - he'll let everyone around him know with big words and lots of gesturing, and that big mouth of his often gets him in trouble. It also means he's good at reading his public and helping others with their own emotions - he sees right through Geralt's stoic face and bullshit claims of not being friends all the time, and offers comfort when needed even if the witcher didn't ask for it, simply because he knows. That makes Jaskier a good asset - he may be no warrior, but he's great moral support. He's incredibly energetic and very determined (always trying to stay positive and bring a smile to everyone's face), easily approachable and loyal to a fault. To quote his actor, he's like a puppy that follows anyone around, falling for them a little too fast.

Feeling every emotion so strongly has its cons, of course: it means his flaws come off quite intensely as well. His determination to get what he wants crosses the line into an annoying, stubborn brat more often than not, because Jaskier doesn't know how to take no for an answer. His confidence in his talents equals an ego of the size of a mountain and being in love with his own voice. Jaskier can talk for hours (and loudly at that!), even in contexts where silence would be more appropriate - like he tells Geralt, "I don’t really go in for that". It's part of his need for attention, for approval and praise, to be heard and acknowledged - few things he hates more than being ignored and not taken seriously. This childish, immature side of him manifests itself in pettiness and cattiness, as we see in the way he fights Geralt for the djinn bottle after the witcher insulted his singing, his exchange of witty (and quite mean, honestly) insults with Yennefer, and his wish for his artistic rival to die on the spot. To be fair, though, he usually isn't a violent person: he was kinda tipsy and quite sad that day, but it's still very telling that's where his mind first went, his ex-girlfriend to take him back being the wish after that one. And that reaction to his break-up (getting drunk, whining to Geralt about it) leads into another important aspect of his: being so over-emotional means he gets particularly bitchy when he's hurt and/or insulted. Sure, being confident means getting thrown bread by some randoms over a bad performance gets easily dismissed; but when it's his beloved friend Geralt that insults his singing or the powerful sorceress Yennefer's comebacks hit him in a weak spot (like his aging) then his mood gets blue and his tongue loses his silver color. Losing his mastery of the words also happens when he gets intimated, as seen when he tries to flirt with two mighty female warriors (he's used to maids and noble ladies, don't judge him) and being threatened by a cuckold husband.

Stuck between the good and the bad it's Jaskier's eye for opportunity. Yes, in essence, he's a good guy who genuinely cares (in fact, we could say he cares too much) but behind his kind actions there's also a tiny touch of selfishness, because rest assured, Jaskier is getting something out of it, even if it's just a story. And this is what makes Jaskier resourceful. While he grew up spoiled (and let's be honest, he still is a little bit), he quickly had to adapt to life without dad's protection and money. He was already traveling alone before meeting Geralt, probably by getting favors through his charms and flirtatious ways - we can imagine, for example, he would convince merchants to let him ride with them to reach the next city, therefore gaining safety on the road. Joining the witcher in his travels has taught him even more, now his "resources" include knowing how to start a fire, cook a fish and stitch a wound.

By the way, "flirtatious ways" is barely achieving to explain how thirsty Jaskier is. It's 100% true that he's a stereotypical bard, he hits on anything with a pulse. He says it himself: "Hard to say. One stops keeping count after a while. Wives, concubines, mothers sometimes". It's the main reason (though far from the only one) why he gets in trouble, but he doesn't care, because at the end of the day, Jaskier will always run away from said problems. Life must be enjoyed and if that includes singing about fucking a fawn in front of the Queen of Cintra and her entire court, so be it.

[It's the coast! Finally! Jaskier adores the beach and after traveling for so long, he's been dying to see it. Especially after he heard that Olivine City is known as 'the most romantic city in Johto'. Ah, a place after his own heart. First things first though, a rest at the Pokécenter for his dear team, and shopping for supplies.

The sun is setting when he's ready to carry on with his plan, and he can't complain: sunset is the perfect stage. Barefoot, he walks on the shore with three Pokémon: a Wigglytuff and a Brionne at his feet, plus a Swablu on top of his head. He's also carrying a ukulele in his arms.]

    Ready, my dears?

[All three Pokémon agree and the show starts: Jaskier sings and plays his instrument with the expertise of someone who has been doing this for years, his voice carrying on with strength to reach everyone's ears, every word filled with emotion. And the Pokémon? They sing along in their cute little language. Swablu stays on Jaskier's head, shaking his fluffy wings as his trainer dances in little hops. Wigglytuf and Brionne, meanwhile, dance along on the wet sand in a very simple but energetic choreography.

Soon an audience forms around them and Jaskier beams, absorbing the attention he loves so much. He asks everyone to clap along, dedicates charming smiles and even the occasional wink to pretty faces. Some people even join in the dancing, especially couples. What about you, innocent bystander? Are you going to clap as well? Dance? Toss a coin berry perhaps?]

    Character
    Name: Felix Fraldarius
    Series: Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Timeline: Azure Moon right after taking back Fhirdiad, before leaving for Derdriu
    Canon Resource Links: FE wiki

Personality: Felix comes across to most people as a prickly, judgmental, and standoffish man with little interest in anything that isn't swordsmanship, training, or competition. This surface persona is accurate, but it's far from the whole picture. In truth, Felix holds people at arm's length--even his closest friends--out of a deep-seated fear of loss and ruin, and a hatred for the culture of their homeland that many of them still hold dear.

Felix was a sensitive child whose every emotion was overwhelming and easily seen on his face. He cried at the drop of a hat, idolized his older brother Glenn, and dearly loved his friends (and would cry whenever they had to go home). Like most Faerghan nobles, he learned to wield a sword before he learned to read or write; his brother Glenn was a knight dedicated to protecting the young Prince Dimitri, one of Felix's beloved best friends. Felix became stubbornly competitive thanks to constantly losing his sparring duels with Glenn, and swore that he would train and train until one day he would defeat his brother.

But the same tragedy that took Dimitri's parents took Glenn, too. He died doing his duty to protect Dimitri, sacrificing himself to ensure the prince's survival. Felix took his brother's death hard, but even worse than losing him was their father's reaction: "He died like a true knight." It seemed like he was happier for Glenn to have died young and with honor, fulfilling his duty to king and country, than to live long enough to die some ordinary death. To Felix's shock, almost everyone he knew agreed, including Glenn's fiancee Ingrid, who was one of Felix's closest friends. It awoke a deep, frustrated rage inside Felix that he turned into a shield.

It got worse when he and Dimitri fought their maiden battle together to put down a rebellion, and Felix saw the dark and bloodthirsty battle rage that now lurked inside his prince. Terrified, he was convinced that the Dimitri he knew was dead and gone, and what was left was nothing but a monster pretending at nobility--another loss of a loved one. In his grief, fear, and anger, Felix closed himself off from everyone and forgot how to express his strongest feelings without covering them up with spite.

Later, attending the Officers' Academy as a teenager with all three of his childhood best friends, their relationships were so strained that Felix could barely have a conversation with any of them without snapping and saying hurtful things to keep them distant. Only a scant few of their classmates could get through his irascible shell to make a real connection with him. The trouble was that he did still deeply care about his friends, but his feelings were so complicated and upsetting that he had no idea how to show it. The more he cared, the worse he treated people.

Almost six years of war have mellowed him out considerably, though, and although he's still prickly, socially awkward, and critical of others, still has a hard time expressing his emotions or being vulnerable, and still views everything as a competition, he has learned how to open up to people again--particularly Sylvain, who has been with him through everything all these years. Felix still treasures the promise they made as children that neither of them would die without the other so they would never be apart, and he still harbors an intense fear that one day, Sylvain's loyalty (and his deathwish) will lead him to sacrifice himself for Felix's safety just like Glenn sacrificed himself for Dimitri's.

Recently, Felix's father died protecting Dimitri too, while the prince was lost deep in his depression and rage. Dimitri himself has improved drastically since then, and Felix can even hold a conversation with him now without threatening him (usually), but all these "heroic" sacrifices weigh heavily on their shared history still. Felix remains dedicated to becoming the strongest and most skilled swordsman in the world, but he's managed to move past doing it for the sake of defeating his brother. If he's strong enough, he reasons, then his friends won't have to endanger themselves to protect him, and he can protect them instead so he doesn't have to lose anyone else.

Felix does have a softer side, particularly when it comes to cats, geeking out over swords, defending innocents, and an interest in the arts. He tries his best to hide all of this.

    Name: Jack
    Series: Borderlands The Pre-Sequel
Timeline: Middle of the game, during The Felicity Incident
Canon Resource Links: Jack's Wiki Page

    Personality:

Jack before he was Handsome was a very different beast in some ways, and not at all in others. Jack is an asshole, no matter the canon point. He makes jokes at others' expense, he complains over every little thing, he has a quick temper he has difficulty controlling. But a lot of it is bluster, a very clear attempt to cover up his own shortcomings and present a 'better' face to the world, or to compare his own shortcomings to others in a 'well I'm not that bad' kind of way. Because Jack is a man of great self-doubt and inner turmoil, in a place where he thinks he knows the person he wants to be but still isn't sure how to be that.

But the biggest difference between Jack later in the series and Jack from this canon point is that he still cares. He cares about doing what's right, he cares how other people will be affected by things, he cares about major consequences. At the point I'm taking him from he's struggling with regret over having to sacrifice a fully self aware AI to save the moon. He's torn over the fact that doing the right thing and saving millions of people means an individual has to be sacrificed. Just before this he was willing to let someone who betrayed him just walk away, choosing mercy over violence. It doesn't end well, but Jack tries.

This isn't to say he's not severely damaged already. He very much is. He's obsessed with the idea of being 'the hero' and doing the things heroes do - he even says as much when Helios is being attacked, and he offers to stay behind to try and fend off the invasion to allow the Vault Hunters he's hired to escape. 'Self sacrifice is just the kind of thing hero types do!'. His fixation on doing the right thing is, in many ways, performative. It feeds into that idea that he knows who he wants to be and is trying to change himself to match it. He wants to be the hero so he tries to do the things 'heroes' do. At this point, Jack is still more interested in being loved and seen as 'good' than being feared and all powerful. In a weird way, Jack at this point is in a period of finding himself and figuring out who he really is. He has violent impulses that he's beginning to think aren't actually that bad, but he hasn't yet embraced his violent leanings or decided that the end justifies any means, all the time.

And he is crippled with self doubt beneath it all. He's in the process of making himself over from a quiet, not very well known, does-what-he's-told cog in the corporate wheel to what he sees as a cool heroic guy who takes charge and takes chances and makes an impression. But he's not that far removed from his old meek and easily bullied self, and being seen as such. He questions himself, he's riddled with fear that maybe he can't really be anything else, and doubles down harder to try and combat that. More jokes, more loudness, more flash and razzle dazzle to cover it.

Which also means he's pretty image oriented, and puts a ridiculous amount of effort into how he looks and dresses and presents himself.

He's also rash and impulsive, quick to commit to what even he acknowledges are not exactly great plans but probably the best option at the moment, and tends to dismiss the idea of taking time to think and explore other possibilities. On top of that he digs in his heels and commits to his ideas and suggestions, and while somewhat open to outside input, does tend to be resistant and argue even if he eventually comes to agree with someone else's suggestion. He already sees himself as the hero of the story, so to speak.

And still reasonably understands what a 'hero' actually is.

[A confused and alarmingly familiar but not quite the same face pops up on the network. That is indeed Jack (later to be known as Handsome) but looking like he's in his thirties or early forties and without the trademark face stapled to his face.]

    So...this isn't a simulation, is it?

[There's a weak chuckle and Jack runs a hand through his hair, eyes darting to the side as though there's something just off camera he's not thrilled to be seeing.]

Cuz I was thinking it was at first, some kinda I dunno, immersive experience or virtual vacation or something...but that's not the deal, is it? I mean even for a really good simulation, top of the line, this is way too lifelike and real! Our...our simulation design people aren't that good! I don't think? Honestly I don't pay that much attention to them...

But! Here's the thing....whatever tear in space and time or hidden alien door I stumbled through, it's not working for me. Kind of in the middle of something really important, I mean we're talking whole lotta lives depending on it, not even exagerating about that. So....anybody wanna adopt a sad alien bug and point me in the right direction to whatever series of difficult steps I gotta take to get outta here?

Seriously, the bug is sad. I think maybe it's made of sadness. Of course I probably would be too if I was called Wimpo, which I guess is what they're called. Been calling him Beefo instead, try to give it some self esteem. I dunno if it's working...

So yeah! Long story short, gotta find somebody to take sad wimp bug and give me directions so I can get back to saving the moon and getting my job back!

    Character
    Name: Mira Delacroix
    Series: Original
Timeline: A month before the winter solstice.
    Canon Resource Links: n/a

Original Character Background: Centuries ago, the gods got bored.

As you do, as an all-powerful being. It's sometimes not enough to just watch humanity play out, play its role. Sometimes, gods get bored too, and they feel the need to prove themselves. Unfortunately, what the gods of this world decided to do in order to combat that boredom is... make a bet. The gods are your traditional gods of light and darkness; they're more akin to siblings, and when siblings squabble, sometimes others get involved. The "Chosen Ones" are not exactly your traditional Chosen Ones--rather, they're more pawns in a game. Every couple of decades, the world is outright remodeled, reformed, reborn.

That's not to say the world isn't fully formed, with its own history and everything. The current world is one that closely follows ours, aside from gods, divine intervention, and people with special powers--we're dealing with gods, after all, gods who just so happen to be drunk off their own power. So, essentially, the world is just like any run of the mill world... aside from, you know, the people with special powers and gods.

    As for Mira herself--

In the interest of keeping this somewhat concise, we'll go over the most significant points of Mira's history that she doesn't remember, but which have had a bearing on who she is as a person.
Mira's first life is, perhaps, the one in which she is the most different from how she currently is. She grew up in a small village with her parents, and with magic outlawed, she had to practice her mastery of it in secret. She was, at one point, able to command the elements, with a particular affinity for water and ice. Unfortunately, after her village was attacked, she ended up joining a rebellion against the corrupt king. It didn't end well, to put it lightly; Mira ultimately ended up biting off more than she could chew and the rebellion sort of... fizzled out. While Mira didn't know it, the world she knew literally revolved around her and another. That is... she's little more than a player in a game. One--the pawn of darkness, Elios--was given a choice. The other, Mira, was not. The cycles go like this: Elios and Mira are reborn. They find each other, and one way or another, one ends up dead at the hands of the other. If Mira kills, it's a point to the god of darkness. If Elios kills, it's a point to the god of light. Then, the world is wiped clean, rebuilt, and it begins again.

It makes sense to them, probably.

Her second life was largely inconsequential, fairly normal aside from the whole power play between gods--which she learned about here, owing to the fact that she remembered her past life. It wasn't until the third life that things really got interesting; Mira remembered her first two lives and ended up outright refusing to take part in the game.

Obviously, the gods didn't like this, so they decided to punish her for her indiscretion: They decided, "Well, we can't have people outright defying us." So they took her elemental powers, reformed them to be her empathy, and the cherry on top of the whole thing? Those with powers are treated with hostility. It's not outright violent, but there's always discontent bubbling beneath the surface. Furthermore, from this life on forward, Mira remembers nothing about her past lives. (That isn't to say that Noah, her brother, who's sort of the reluctant immortal eyes and ears for the gods and remembers every cycle, hasn't tried. At one point, Mira and Noah planned to murder the gods, but that never panned out. Unfortunately.) No one ever said these gods were merciful. Essentially, the rest of her lives (we're on the sixth here) are fairly inconsequential, following the usual formula of grow up -> powers manifest -> death occurs.

Born near Cognac, France, Mira Delacroix grew up, at least early on, with a fairly normal childhood. Her parents were loving and conflict was very low, and her brother Noah doted on her constantly. She grew up surrounded by love and care... until gradually, it started to wane. She couldn't tell you when exactly it happened; it was a slow process, her alienation. But her brother remained ever at her side. One day, when Noah had finally had enough, he packed up his and Mira's belongings, and they moved out. Her parents easily signed over custody of her, and while thirteen-year-old Mira was confused and hurt, she had a feeling that it was for the best. They moved to the States, specifically Washington, and Noah enrolled her in a private school. It was then that Noah told her the truth: They were both born with special powers, and the world they lived in fed on that power and turned it outward. What resulted was the inhabitants of the world sensing danger from powered individuals. At least during her childhood, the more Mira's powers (those of empathy, the power to feel and even influence others' emotions in a subtle way) grew, the more her world raised its defenses.

Noah, an inventor, created for her a little pendant that would dampen the world's effects. While not very strong, it still had the desired effect: People mostly avoided her, but did not exhibit outright hostility. With the pendant tucked close to her heart, Mira entered college, and she met a young man named Elios. They bonded quickly, and Mira found herself drawn to him for a reason even she couldn't discern. She's opened up a little after entering college--and meeting Aiden, an aspiring writer who would become Noah's boyfriend--and it seemed like college would be almost good for her.

And then, one day, Mira came home to find Elios in her and Noah's apartment. Her brother sat dead at his desk, and Elios had a precious object in his hand: another pendant. Mira panicked, and Elios attacked; she fended him off, scared out of her mind, and she ended up taking his life in self-defense. Mira ran, after sending a message to Aiden that she was leaving, but didn't tell him where she was going. Eventually, though, Aiden caught up with her, and after chastising her for running away from him, especially, they put their heads together.

Aiden and Mira found Noah's journal, and after finding out the truth about Mira's situation (most importantly that she was little more than a pawn in a game set forth by gods she didn't know existed, and that she had lived and died countless "cycles"), a representative for the gods--sort of like a record-keeper, like Noah was--made contact with the two and let them helpfully know that the gods wanted to speak with Mira on the winter solstice. (Listen, they're dramatic, they can't help it.) With that in mind, Mira and Aiden began preparing for the meeting in just a few short months.

Personality: More than anything, Mira is insecure. Her power of empathy rested dormant inside her until around the time she turned ten. Up until that point, she had a normal life, a good relationship with her parents, until gradually that started to change. Understandably, this resulted in a lot of confusion and upset for Mira; her life had been turned upside down. It resulted in her feeling like everything is very fragile, easily changed, and so her ability to trust started to change, too. She started to see the world in a different light--she finds it difficult to truly grow close to someone. This is an interesting contrast to her desire to be close to people. She's someone who thrives on interactions and relationships with other people, but at the same time... well, she's worried that it could all change in an instant. It results in a lot of overthinking on Mira's part--how can she know that things won't be different the next day? She also tends to avoid her problems as much as possible, rather than face them head on. Still, it doesn't particularly stop her from trying to reach out to people. There's just, you know. A lot of underlying anxiety there.

After Mira's brother had grown sick of seeing his little sister so miserable, he made the decision to pack up with her and take her to a new home. Noah's act of love and kindness not only paved the way for a better life--owing, also, to the charmed necklace he created for her, which sort of "masks" her powers and therefore makes things a little more normal for her--but it's inspired her. Kindness has always been in her nature, but Noah's always emphasized and encouraged showing it. It's instilled within her the importance of treating someone with kindness. (Though, within reason. Don't waste your time on being kind to someone who won't show you the same, Noah had always told her--though she doesn't always quite follow that.) Her brother's lessons have stuck with her, then; and, maybe, if there's someone who's suffering, Mira thinks that maybe a little bit of kindness can go a very long way. Additionally, the move from France to the States has allowed her to kind of loosen up a little. She's been able to open up, to allow herself to take chances. She still has that anxiety, but at the same time, the change has done a world of difference for her.

Combined with her move, entering college has resulted in her examining her interests and what she wants to do. She's focused on keeping her head down for the most part, but a little encouragement from her brother has helped her branch out. It's been hard for her to truly open up, mostly because of her empathy, and letting her guard down would result in feeling a lot of things she probably doesn't want to feel from other people... but it's been a change. She's far from outgoing, yes, but bring up one of her interests, and she will talk for ages. (Especially books. She can talk endlessly about books.) Mira's not made a lot of friends, but the ones she has made have been invaluable in making her feel more at ease with herself. Especially if she feels a connection to someone--say, a kindred spirit who openly shows their love for books--she doesn't have too much of a problem opening up, joking with someone, and so on. It might be cliche, but college has helped her find herself.

And yet... her brother's murder at the hands of someone she'd trusted and felt a bond with has left her very shaken. Her desire to feel connections with people can sometimes keep her from being a great judge of character; when you haven't had something your whole life, and you find it, it's hard to really know what to do with it. That is to say... she'd found a sense of stability, and a part of her had been afraid to entertain any idea that something might send it crashing down. Sure enough, that sense of stability she'd desperately needed and wanted crumbled in an instant, and she hasn't been able to forgive herself for seeing that things weren't as bright and good as she'd wanted them to be. Mostly, she's felt a lot of fear since that moment, but also there's been a little anger (at Elios, for murdering her brother; at herself, for feeling so scared and taking someone's life, and apparently having done it several times). Then again, that anger has made her feel distinctly uncomfortable, particularly because she hasn't ever felt true anger. It's hard for her to process it, and it's something she still hasn't reconciled. It's left her feeling adrift at sea, in a manner of speaking, and she hasn't yet been able to find her footing. Combine that with the grief she's having trouble working through, and it leaves her more than a little out of sorts. Aiden's helped with that, at least somewhat, but she still has trouble with the anger bit. More than that, feeling something so new has left her feeling like she doesn't know herself. Mira knows she has a lot to learn, especially about herself, so there might be some identity issues simmering beneath the surface, too! How fun.

And then... there's her discovery of Noah's journal. When you live forever, you tend to write things down. And as Noah is a messenger of the gods, he writes down everything that's related to Mira, her situation, and her past lives. After Noah's death, Mira actually discovers this journal, and everything sort of falls into place. It doesn't do much to make her feel better, but it does give her an understanding of why things are the way they are. She also learns that the necklace Noah made for her blocks the gods' influence over her. So, essentially, it keeps her from that hostility... and also keeps her from being subjected to the whole game. So her current life, after she takes Elios's life, remains. The discovery of Noah's journal does something very important for her: It instills a sense of determination in her, and gives her a goal: To end things for good. While it takes a while for her to reach this breakthrough after reading the journal, Mira believes she deserves a real chance at living, instead of just playing along in something she never chose. It's something she throws her whole heart and soul into, and she dedicates herself fully to it.

[ There's perhaps too much of a close-up when they video clicks on, but Mira settles back with a smile. She looks almost nervous; it's her first post to the network, after all, even if she's used it to reply to other people. There's just something nervewracking about addressing so many people, but regardless... Once she takes a breath, her shoulders relax, and her smile becomes less tentative.

At her side, there are a couple of Stufful. Well--one is splayed across her lap, anyway. ]

When I woke up this morning, I had a few eggs. [ She leans forward and turns the camera to where the eggs are--and sure enough, there's a small pile of three eggs. ] I was kind of surprised, actually; it's the first time I've woken up to any. I'm still getting the hang of being a breeder, but... it's certainly a start.

[ She seems pretty proud about that, and the Stufful in her lap coos. ]

People charge for these, right...? Honestly, I'm not sure what kind of price to set... I've never had to do any kind of sale myself, but I'd like to give these to good homes. So if you're interested.... I'd love to work something out.

[ She looks like she's about to say something else, but apparently one of her Stufful decides to be a menace and bat at the Gear. Mira lets out a startled noise-- ]

    Oh, no, wa--

[ --just before the Stufful knocks it over, cutting off the video. ]

    Character
    Name: Neville Longbottom
    Series: Harry Potter
    Timeline: Beginning of 5th Year
Canon Resource Links: character wiki and series wiki

Personality: To the wizarding world at large, Neville would be considered a failure to launch. His parents were known for their magical talent and bravery in fighting against Lord Voldemort in the first wizarding war. So surely he must have exceptional magic talent himself, right? He's certainly been told time and time again that he's got big shoes to fill, that great things are expected of him.

In reality, Neville is perfectly average for the most part, but his key strength is his potential. For years, Neville would wonder why the Sorting Hat would put him in the Gryffindor House. It's the "brave" house, the house for those who are loud and boisterous and adventurous. Neville himself is everything opposite of that. He's quiet, reserved, and non-confrontational, so why wouldn't he be put somewhere more fitting, like Hufflepuff? Because the Sorting Hat knew that Neville has it in him TO be all of those qualities, he just needs to find them within.

Our first impression of Neville is that he's clumsy and forgetful, losing his toad within minutes of boarding the Hogwarts Express where he's first introduced. A while later, to further cement his forgetfulness, Neville is sent a magical device to help him remember when he's forgotten something, which immediately activates to reveal he has... only, he doesn't remember what it is he's forgotten!

Neville is shown to struggle with even the most basic of magical talents. He's unable to ride a broom, suffers an injury when with his inability to control it, and gets his possessions stolen by the school bullies constantly. He says he would rather endure the teasing and the bullying, as he doesn't want to cause more trouble for himself by trying to fight back. He's aware of how much of a pushover he is, but he struggles with the inability to stick up for himself.

Throughout school, it takes other people standing up for Neville and showing confidence in him that he finally starts to find some in himself. After a pep talk from Ron, Neville can stand up, even if feebly, to those bullying him, and later, when he catches Ron breaking rules, finds the confidence to try and stop him from doing so, physically or otherwise. He's swiftly taken care of by Hermione, but it's a big first step on his journey to discovering his potential. When he does begin standing up for himself more often, he often does so to disastrous and dangerous results, but the fact he tries is a feat on its own.

As time goes on, Neville discovers an aptitude and passion for Herbology, the study of magical plants. Where he struggles with every other subject, Neville can pass Herbology with ease. He's happy to discuss plants with anyone who will listen and is proud to show off the rare and exotic plant he's given as a gift. He continues struggling with his education through the years, failing to earn an acceptable grade in a few specific subjects, but is highly encouraged to follow his talents in Herbology, where he receives top marks. For Neville, potions, in particular, is his weakness and a large portion of it stems from his complete and utter fear of Professor Snape, the Potion's Master. Snape relentlessly mocks him, questions his intelligence, and makes him feel worthless, so it's only natural that Neville wouldn't like him, but it goes further- when faced with a magical creature that transforms into your worst fear, Neville's transforms into Snape.

While Neville is shy and quiet, he's often prone to emotional outbursts and an inability to keep calm in the face of stress. He outright sobs when he's lost the password to Gryffindor tower and realizes he's inadvertently allowed a dangerous criminal to gain access to it. He grimly accepts whatever punishment comes his way, believing firmly that he deserves it for being so careless. Behind all of this, Neville is a kind, well-meaning person who doesn't have a mean bone in his body.

It isn't until his 5th year we learn about the fate of Neville's parents and the burden he has placed on him to live up to their legacy; they've been tortured into insanity by one of Voldemort's followers, Bellatrix Lestrange. Neville keeps this tight-lipped and is accused of being ashamed of them by his grandmother. This isn't the case, Neville is proud to be their son and of everything they did. He keeps it secret out of self-preservation and guilt for not living up to the expectations set. He's well aware of how weak he is compared to them, compounded by how often his grandmother berates him for not living up to expectations.

When the wizarding world starts going to hell and doubt is cast upon Harry, Neville becomes one of his loudest supporters. He's shown to look up greatly to Harry and is even spurred to join Dumbledore's army, a group dedicated to learning defensive magic secretly when the practice is banned by Umbridge. Neville's willingness to break rules and become more skilled at defensive magic is a defining moment for Neville and kickstarts his growth towards being the Gryffindor he is inside.

The key to getting Neville to blossom is all about the right encouragement. He's easily influenced, especially by those he looks up to. It's the braveness exhibited by Harry and sometimes Ron that motivates Neville to stand up for himself and it's under Harry's tutelage that he begins to improve on his magical ability. When he's given a proper environment to grow and thrive, Neville begins to shine. It's been mentioned in canon that nothing saps magical ability away faster than negative emotion and suppression; Neville has been pressured by his family and his teachers to be the best and always falls flat on their expectations, which has a direct impact on his ability to succeed.

By the end of the series, Neville has found the capacity to not only resist Lord Voldemort's regime but also play a key part in the rebellion against it as a whole. He faces daily torture and punishment and puts himself on the line to save students who end up on the wrong side of Voldemort's followers. During the final battle, Neville stands up to Voldemort himself directly in the face of Harry's death, stating that Harry would always be with them and that he would never stop fighting. This show of bravery is what allows Neville to pull the sword of Godric Gryffindor from the Sorting Hat at the last moment, an act that only a "true Gryffindor" can achieve.

    Vih-day-oh? What's that even mean?

[Neville's face appears on the feed, an up-close view of his eyes and nose and he stares at the camera. He has no idea it's on, or even what a video is supposed to be. There are audible clacking noises as he navigates the device in his hand, his eyebrows scrunched up in confusion.]

What are you supposed to be? How do you operate?

[He gives the device a tap, right on the camera lens, but with a defeated sigh, he tosses it aside. The pokegear clatters to the ground, where nothing much else can be seen except for Neville's shoes.]

How am I supposed to use this thing to communicate with people? It doesn't make sense, who delivers the messages? Where's the owl? I don't think mine's working properly, Togie. I dunno what to do.

[A small, high pitched and vaguely exasperated voice, belonging to an unseen Pokemon, can be heard going Pi, Pi, Togepi! before pokegear is jostled and a small Togepi hauls the gear into its grasp. It pointedly gives the device back to Neville, who takes it with a sigh.

    Pi, Pi, Pi. Togie. Togepi.

It sounds as if the small creature is trying its best to explain something to Neville. From the angle he's holding it, the view is all chin as he stares in confusion at the tiny egg Pokemon trying futilely to communicate.]

Sorry, I just... I don't understand. Hey- hey, don't- oh no. Oh no, oh no, oh no- I'm sorry!

[Togepi in all of its tiny frustration had begun to cry and Neville didn't have a clue what to do with it. Care of Magical Creatures was never his best subject, what do you do when they cry? He hasn't got any food or treats or- or anything, really, he's not cut out to be a pet owner. How'd he get roped into this?!

Neville reaches out to pat the creature, shushing and whispering words of encouragement to no avail as Togepi continued its weeping.]

Oh god, someone- anyone? Please? Help?

[And he still has no idea that this whole thing is being broadcast for the world to see.]

    Character
    Name: Lanque Bombyx
    Series: Hiveswap
    Timeline: End of act 2
    Canon Resource Links: Lonk

    Personality:

Where does one even begin with the level of absolute NastyBoy™ that is Lanque? Between being shamelessly aware of how terrible he is, perhaps even proud of his level of venomousness, and his willingness to manipulate others through adapting to a situation and the company it holds in order to get the best outcome for himself despite what it costs to others...needless to say, Lanque wears the descriptor well. Lanque is a bit of an emotional vampire, not to mention a social chameleon, and so if the situation calls for him to fake niceness, he can and will, but if it's more fortuitous for him to be his scathing self, well, he will do that as well.

Being one of the chosen Jades to become an eventual space nun means that for most of Lanque's life he was shut away in the brooding caverns of Alternia. His, and the other jade blooded trolls of the selfsame fate's, duty is to tend to the mothergrub and the newly hatched troll grubs as they go on their way to pupate and eventually undergo their trials. This is a duty that Lanque in no way chose and in every way is resistant to. After all, jade bloods are almost exclusively female, and is the troll caste that has the most gender-specific role in their society. This distinction is pretty important to why Lanque is the way he is.

Being a male troll in an almost exclusively female caste, with a lot of female/mother-adjacent expectations on him, on top of being robbed of any autonomy over his own future, let alone his present, it's at least understandable why he'd act out the way he does. Not that it makes him any less of an asshole, but it certainly doesn't come from nowhere. It doesn't help either that jades are pretty notoriously gossipy and passive-aggressive. But what can one expect when you've been locked up with maybe four other people your whole life and expected to attend to a duty you have no choice in at all.

The cloister is effectively treated like a catholic school, in that there's strict laws and expectations that come from religious texts—one of which being chasteness. That one Lanque certainly doesn't care for. With Lanque being robbed of his freedom, he tries to take it wherever he can get it, and has adopted a very self-centered point of view and a chillingly aloof personality. Considering the jades he's been stuck with, this isn't too surprising, because almost all of them are similarly self-centered and venomous—basically all of them can't stand each other, but are stuck together regardless, which only breeds further resentment.

With this in mind, it makes sense that Lanque has become the self-serving narcissist he is. Between having to combat against the toxicity of his cloistermates, and wanting to defy the fate that's been decided for him, he'll stop at nothing to try and achieve his freedom. And I mean nothing. In an attempt to orchestrate a distraction so that he could take advantage of the one time a sweep his group of jades are allowed to leave the brooding caverns, he effectively created a situation that could (and depending on the player's choice) lead to someone dying. Whether it be one of the jades (Lynera) or Joey (the main character, whom of which he kills himself by tossing her off of a moving training). He is utterly unapologetic about this, and shows absolutely no remorse for either case.

Hell, part of his plan is to take advantage of another male jade blood's planned culling—one of the members of a boyband—and fill the hole his death would leave. Upon this success, he would then be free from his duties of being shipped off to the space nunnery, where he would never again be able to party, or have sex, or truly live. Because of this perceived impending doom inching closer and closer, Lanque wastes no time to deceive people to get what he wants from them, even using said tragic fate to make people pity him into giving in, and could not care less about the negative impact it has on others.

Why should he? As far as he cares, his life is going to be ending, and everyone else has their lives spanning before them, enjoying the freedom they hardly even know they have, while he's known nothing but the shackles of his preordained role. Understandably, Lanque is very jaded (there was no avoiding this pun), and pushes against every expectation of him he can. So much so, it's part of his identity, and might have been a factor in his gender identity as well. You see, while he is indeed a male jade blood, he was not hatched male in the physical sense as pertains to troll physiology (whatever that means!). In short, he is a transman stuck in a role and situation structured entirely around the idea of being mothers and nurturers to their species, a role decidedly female by their society, and he is decidedly not.

Despite all these flaws, there is some proof that Lanque isn't necessarily all bad, and doesn't hate all of the jades he's stuck with. Wanshi is the youngest of their group, and she made a remark that there is a jade blood among their group that does play with her, even if he pretends to be too cool for it otherwise. With him being the only male in their group, it's clearly him, which would imply he does have a fondness for her. Perhaps somewhere within him he does care for kids or younger trolls, a nurturing aspect of himself he has otherwise squashed in defiance to his forced role, that he denies himself in order to maintain the persona he's crafted for himself. But we don't know for certain.

Lanque and Wanshi's closeness is further suggested by the fact that one of the routes you can take with the situation the former caused, is that Wanshi plants evidence in an attempt to incriminate someone else. She tries to cover for Lanque, and likewise when she gets picked as the culprit, does not out him at all. Yet, at the same time, Lanque does not speak up for her, nor defends her at all, and so while he might be capable of growing fond and making friends with people, he is just as likely to throw them under the bus if it serves his scheme.

Hmm, okay, maybe he is all bad, but perhaps he has the potential to be better. Too bad he has no intention to walk down that path!

    Name: Razor
    Series: Genshin Impact
Timeline: post "The Meaning of Lupical"
Canon Resource Links: Razor’s wiki page

    Personality:
Razor is a simple sort of person -- or wolf, depending on how you look at it and how he’s feeling at that time. That isn’t to say he’s unintelligent, necessarily, but being raised by wolves does make a person rather ignorant to things like societal complexities and the ever-changing wants and needs that come with a cushy city lifestyle.

In the forest of Wolvendom, Razor was completely content with the life of a wolf, living day by day, hunting and eating and playing with his pack. He’s always known he isn’t technically a wolf, but that didn’t matter to him so much in the past; the pack is his lupical, his family. He recognized immediately when visited by a human that they looked the same, but he’s certainly never fit in with humans socially.

His unfamiliarity with human society doesn’t make him hostile toward mankind, though. The first man to visit him repeatedly gave Razor his name and taught him to wield a sword with which to protect his pack, and Razor happily went along with it all. He’s quick, even, to socialize with humans. He takes elemental training and language lessons from the nearby city’s librarian when she visits, though language itself can frustrate him. And he forms a puppy-like friendship with a young knight even though she wreaks fiery havoc wherever she goes. He even goes so far as to interrupt his pack’s hunt to save a couple of nearby travelers from being overwhelmed by monsters. Saving them is more important to him than eating that day.

When it comes down to it, although Razor is wary of the effect humans can have on nature, he tends not to assume bad intentions right off the bat; after all, what wild animal ever had moral failings? Wolves are loyal and protective, and it’s those traits that Razor most embodies, and fiercely so -- he gained his elemental Vision by single-handedly taking on a powerful mage for hurting his pack. He also values kindness, as is clear from the generosity he’s accepted from the city’s knights, and from his box of gifts from human friends -- his only worldly possessions besides his sword and clothes.

Despite the friendships he’s made with humans, Razor likely wouldn’t have left his pack if not having been ordered to by the wolf spirit who initially took him in as an infant. Although he’s remiss to admit it, Razor isn’t truly a wolf, and in the end it is healthier for all if he leaves wolf society to real wolves.

Fitting in with other humans will likely always be a struggle for him, however much he enjoys their company. He finds communicating with them exhausting, and cannot begin to fathom the ways of the human world. Even though he’s faced with such a task, humans are his lupical now, and he knows nothing if not loyalty and survival.

Given the state of the creature before him, Razor could easily toss a Pokeball and capture it without even bothering to battle. The little Electro pup is clearly favoring one leg, and appears quite lost, with nowhere to hide or tend to its wounds. It’s irritated, bristling with electricity and snarling at the intruder.

Pokeballs, though, don’t interest the wolf boy. Were it not for the enforced 6-per-party rule, he wouldn’t even keep them. So he’ll go about befriending Electrike the natural way.

To start, he finds shelter nearby, not so close that he disturbs the injured Pokemon, but close enough that it can grow accustomed to his scent and presence. He doesn’t bother with speaking to it; animals don’t speak. He simply goes about looking after himself and his team for the day, keeping an eye on the wild dog, ensuring that no more harm comes to it.

For Electrike’s part, after a few hours it stops growling. There’s a chance it simply tired itself out. Razor’s heart aches, seeing how miserable and alone the creature is, imagining what it’s been through to end up in such a predicament.

When it’s time for eating, he tears strips of meat off of his own meal and stands to approach the Pokemon. This causes the animal to stand and resume its growling, trying to appear as threatening as it can.

Even though Razor approaches slowly and holds the meat outstretched, Electrike is too afraid to trust him. In a flash, it leaps forward and bites Razor’s hand, sending a shock up his arm and causing him to yelp and drop the meat.

They separate, Razor stepping back toward camp, holding his freshly injured hand, and Electrike eyeing him warily. Razor isn’t angry in the least, and only marginally harmed. His hand will heal, but he doesn’t know if he can say the same for a wounded wild animal. Despite the superficial injury, he gives an exaggerated whine, the kind of sound he’d make if a pup was playing too rough and needed to learn better self control.

This, as planned, seems to both confuse and reassure Electrike. Finally, it sniffs at the meat and steps forward to drag it back to its resting spot.

Smiling to himself, Razor returns to his own camp. He crudely bandages his hand and gets back to his own meal, keeping in Electrike’s line of sight. Now it knows that he wants to help rather than harm it, and with more patience, he’s certain they can come to trust one another.

Until then, he’ll continue to offer the Pokemon what aid it will accept, and after it’s healed, he’ll allow it to decide whether or not it wants to join his journey.

    Character
    Name: Jinx
    Series: Teen Titans (2003)
    Timeline: Post Lightspeed (Season 5)
Canon Resource Links: black magic woman ! Due to how the show was written, we never truly delve into Jinx’s backstory save for a vague hint, and as such much is left up to interpretation however.

Personality: Jinx is an ambitious, hard working teenage girl who wants better for herself than what she’s got. Before, this meant being the best villain she could be, and now she just wants what’s best for her in general- and unfortunately for her former team, this means she wants more respect than they were giving her as a friend and as a leader. Although she can be genial- especially when it’s advantageous- Jinx does have a mean streak, and her temper can flare with ease. Due to her desire for control in her life, she does her best to keep a handle on it but she can lash out at others at times of high stress… or high annoyance. She’s also had no issues with casual petty cruelty, though with Kid Flash’s pleas of being better, and her recent defection, she’s been struggling with a newfound sense of guilt… not that she’ll admit it without prompting.

Underneath the pride and ambition however, Jinx is incredibly insecure about her capabilities- is she strong enough? Smart enough? Hardened enough for the life she’d been leading? Kind enough for the path she’s taking now? Though she refuses to permit any mistreatment from anyone- including her own former idol- she also struggles with treating herself well, and thinks of herself as lesser or undeserving due to her bad luck powers, especially as it’s later revealed in comics that she can’t control them nearly as well as she’d like to and her allies have suffered for it. She generally has high expectations of others, and expects them to be better than her, be it as a criminal or morally. With what little is known about her life, we can only surmise from her desire to be ‘useful’ and in command of her life and her team that she has suffered mistreatment and abandonment from those in her life before Dark Way Prep and later HIVE.

Other traits of note is her affection towards her allies and friends, maturity in comparison with her former team- being focused and driven on her missions and assignments while they wanted to play around, for example- and her flair for the dramatics, such as her quiet, intimidating and eerie persona during heists and her initial attack on the Titans. Jinx is aware of how she’s perceived, and how she wants to be seen at any given time… however, she’s ultimately still a kid, and one who likes fashion, art and unicorns… and also crimes, occasionally. (You can’t expect her to turn around in a day, after all, and she worked hard at being a good thief- loud and attention grabbing or otherwise!)

    Name: Cloud Strife
    Series: Final Fantasy VII Remake
    Timeline: Leaving Midgar
    Canon Resource Links: here

    Personality:
Cloud, despite his gruff and cold demeanor he tries to portray, is incredibly caring. There is quite a few times where he shows how much he cares for those around him. He gives his own brand of encouragement to Wedge to get the other to be more confident and is willing to help out Tifa and Barret around the neighborhood even if he grumbles about pay. Some of his side quests involve children, whom he seems to have a sort of soft spot for.

Being rather open-minded, Cloud isn’t really shaken by what people do. Cloud takes to being flirted with by men and women about the same, which is awkwardly, yet he doesn’t really tell anyone to knock it off. As is shown with some of his dialogue with Jesse, Cloud is sort of capable of being able to flirt back. He is rather accepting of his friends even if he makes comments to the contrary. They also are most likely to come across Cloud’s dry and ironic sense of humor.

Cloud is rather intelligent and retains a lot of what he learns. For the group, he is the go-to guy for information about SHINRA and their enemies. Due to his time working for SHINRA, he knows the general layouts and the some of the internal logistics of the company. Everything new presented to him is of course remembered for later as well, such as the tunnel Aerith shows Cloud that leads to Sector 7 through the playground by the gate.

He can be very dismissive as part of his colder attitude towards others. For a good part of the first half of the game, Cloud refuses to admit he’s friends with anyone. This is due to him trying to remain the mercenary who doesn’t anyone. Cloud also hides his emotions and dismisses them when he’s asked how he feels. His face is like an open book though, so his friends can tell when something is bothering him despite him trying his best to remain unreadable. The hardest emotion for him to hide is his confusion when presented with new social situations.

Which leads to Cloud being awkward in general. One of the biggest displays in the entire game is with Aerith when they are traveling towards Sector 7. She tries to give him a high five and receives confusion in return. This goes on for a few tries before Cloud really tires and they are finally successful when they reach the end of the tunnel. This is a good example of how bad Cloud can be with people, yet does his best to try and be better.

Ruthlessness is something displayed in the Remake more as he is shown to be more than willing to kill Johnny for the perceived betrayal of Avalanche. Cloud makes no secret that he is willing to do anything to get a job done, including killing, though he draws a line at sacrifice of his friends.

    Victory Road Sample:
[Waking in this new place was starting to become more of a getting used to it situation over a “can I please just leave” one. Cloud can feel his Rockruff curled up tightly against his side. A comfort when everything else felt too surreal. Even as he tries to deny that he likes things like animals, he can’t get himself to treat his Rockruff badly. She was his partner and the only thing in this world he could depend on at the moment.

He sighs as he sits up for another day of “adventure”. Mercenary work didn’t seem to be much of a thing here. Apparently, he was a trainer, and was meant to get his Rockruff to be strong for gym challenges. He was okay with part of that. Battles got him money, and money was something he understood.

Reaching over, he pats his Pokemon till she wakes with a squeaking yawn. Her big stretch gets a rare smile from the blond mercenary. No one was here to see it so no one could say he was even capable of it. Aerith would be jealous that a puppy was getting more out of Cloud than she and the others could. Cloud wouldn’t mind his friends being here, yet it better they weren’t. They could make it out of the Midgar outlying area and to the new town on their own…. Or so he hopes.]

Come on. We need to get going.

[Another day, another chance for a Pokedollar. Should he find more Pokemon to add to his team? Probably. There had been an Espurr following them. A Psychic type from the looks of it, and his Rockruff seemed to like it well enough. It was strange that it had followed them into the hotel room but wouldn’t come near their camp.

Cloud wouldn’t question it for the moment. Breakfast was more important. The next time they would be in a city, he would make sure to stop up on Pokepuffs if he could. Then he would figure out what Pokemon to catch next. Train them up to get ready to face the first gym battle and get a badge. There still was some questions as to why badges were relevant, but he knows they will help him travel around in the end.]

    Character
    Name: Marvus Xoloto
    Series: Homestuck
Timeline: Seconds after his last appearance in Hiveswap Act 2
Canon Resource Links: Friendsim appearance and the plot of Hiveswap Act 2. Note that this wiki has a bunch of value judgements and assessments of Marvus’ character that I disagree with. :/ I’ll go over it in the personality.

Personality: The main thing about Marvus is he’s just unreasonably chilled out. Like, even considering the stuff that happens in his episode of the Friendsim is mostly pretty commonplace for trolls, he’s still obscenely relaxed anyway. The crowd riots to death and he just smiles and keeps rapping. Reality begins to unravel and he calmly enacts his plan to bring the PC to safety. But on top of that, highbloods (the Troll species has a caste system based on their rainbow blood colour, red at the bottom, fuchsia at the top, Marvus is purple which makes him 3rd to highest) are expected to be vicious and enforce the caste system and Marvus just. Doesn’t care. He cares enough to make a show of killing the PC for being a redblooded alien who didn’t stand at the back of the crowd for highblood cred, but doesn’t actually do it. He later says that he’s against the caste system, and that purplebloods are the most subjugated and underprivileged class (very arguable) but it seems less like he’s actively fighting the system and more that he just. Doesn’t. Care. My theory here is that has something to do with his powers of knowledge of canonicity. This is something I’ve had to theorise about because they haven’t and may never explain what is actually going on. Thanks, Homestuck. He has knowledge of his position and status within a narrative. In Homestuck, the main characters all have Classes like Rogue and Heir and Aspects like Space and Heart that relate to certain abilities. Marvus’ canon Aspect is Time, and based on his ability here I’ve decided his Class is likely Mage. This essentially means he has a very basic knowledge of the existence of other paths in the timeline and a vague awareness of their content. An instinct that would have really started when he hit 13/6 sweeps. He discusses his and the Player Character’s existence in a narrative that’s extracanonical to main Homestuck as well as the nature of the ‘correct’ path. Knowing things aren’t real and that his life is merely one path among multiple choices isn’t enough for him to feel like reality isn’t valid, but it’s definitely enough to give him a bit of disconnect from it. Like super chill and low-key dissociation. He’s ok with not being real but it means that it’s hard to get too worked up about the overall picture.

Another key element of Marvus is that he’s just. Constantly lying. For one, the Charisma Magnifying power he has is a lie in itself, making him seem way more incredible to people than he would naturally. But aside from that, he doesn’t tell anyone about the way he interacts with and understands the world via his canon knowledge unless they mention it first, like the PC. So he’ll have vague notions of things and have to make up reasons for why he has them. On top of that, as a highblooded celebrity, he has to have a whole persona going in connection with that. That’s why when he rescues the PC from getting totally killed by the crowd and it’s pretty obvious they have red blood, he runs a whole fake stabbing scenario where he accuses them of breaking caste rules and pretends to kill them onstage. He subsequently talks about how he thinks the caste system is bullshit, so it wasn’t just a single exception. It’s something he actively doesn’t believe in that he’s pretending to care about in the public eye. Considering as he’s been pretty constantly filmed since he won Troll American Idol (Slam or Get Culled) a few years back, he’s been Playing Highblood at least that long. It’s honestly never entirely clear when he’s being truthful or real.

Overall, though, he’s a pretty decent guy for a troll. In fact, almost suspiciously decent for a troll. I’m truly sorry, I have to take a moment to explain troll romance here. Troll romance has quadrants. There are two sexy ones that are lovesex and hatesex. There’s one that’s basically mediation for angry trolls. And then there’s moirallegiance, also known as pale romance. It’s like…a very codependent cuddle friendship where each member tries to keep the other one safe and calm and level. Marvus….is a paleslut. He’s overly friendly to a lot of people, and you especially see it with the PC. He meets the PC that day, and in one path, he’s rushing them around in his limo, trying to save their life and protecting them from explosions. In the other, he carries them tenderly into the greenroom and handfeeds them a sandwich on his couch. He really likes being pale…which for humans means he’s a lot friendlier in a human way than a lot of other trolls are, all the way to the point of…service domming? Is that a thing? It’s kind of a thing he does.

In terms of my disagreeing with the wiki…I sincerely don’t think Marvus was cackling, waiting to pull the rug out from under Joey. The way the scene at the end plays out, he clearly just wants to 1. get Joey to amuse the clown car so she can pass through unmolested, 2. learn how to kill or at least fake it for survival. If Joey does just. The worst job of pretending to kill people, he spends the whole time debating the other most dangerous clown into accepting these “kills”, and when Joey has to kill a purpleblood and tells Marvus that she doesn’t know what she’s going to do because she hasn’t actually killed anyone, he shushes her, tells her he knows, sends her on a wild goose chase for Faygo at the very back of the train where there isn’t any pop, and then gets the other clowns to release Joey’s friend to protect her when one of them tries to kill her. The whole thing has the energy of someone’s pet cat bringing them a nearly dead small animal to try and teach them to hunt. Marvus has always been fairly disconnected from everything except for specific people he chooses to fixate on (Friendsim’s PC and Joey, both the Main Characters of their respective games), and I feel like calling him an evil liar is a pretty narrow and basic view of his character. It might have been cruel for Marvus to force Joey to kill people, sure, that was definitely an unfair situation for Joey to end up in. But as Marvus went out of his way to help Joey the entire game, including during the murder game, I don’t think calling him the Secret Villain is accurate. He’s Chaotic Neutral, not Evil, basically. He has a Clown Troll sense of morality.

Victory Road Sample: The main difficulty Marvus has found himself facing here, in Human Fiduspawn Land, is the culture gap. Certain aspects of Alternia have the potential to seem either exotic, or dangerous in an interesting way. With the initial small fanbase he’s been building online, for instance, there is a definite fascination with his teeth. Most people do seem to assume he’s wearing fake teeth but that’s alright. Less threatening that way. And in a reality built for wigglers, ‘less threatening’ than usual clown levels seems to be the way to go.

The real problem is with the aspects of Alternian culture that are unpleasant, or distasteful to humans--often things that never would have occurred to him might be weird. Ape lusi eat bugs, just like trolls, so discovering the general modern human distaste for insects was incredibly confusing, and a lucky catch before he was spotted publicly in early fame days with one of the few insect dishes available. (He might be able to get away with it if he makes it a Challenge? He needs to do more research.) The other weird part is the variety of fashion. It isn’t as if he doesn’t have a couple more outfits arranged at home, like any highblood does for alternate functions. But humans wear different clothes constantly, multiple sets for the exact same purpose. All the local highblood equivalents have more outfits than anyone else. This is a very difficult problem to solve, honestly, as he can’t acquire highblood resources without first being a highblood. He expects this is probably how it must feel to be a lowblood. Anyway, he’s discovered that not only is it difficult to source his same main outfit but that even if he had more than one, people would assume he was marinating in his own filth! That’s already a clown stereotype! Ideally, he’s not going to create the same stereotypes over again in a different branch of reality!

All of this is stacked on top of trying to be sure he understands every aspect of what his new body requires to function similarly to the old one, AND learning the local slam scene. At least his quirk already involves a censor. Humans expect society to be wiggler-proofed, here, and they coddle these kids like an anxious seadweller lusus. One of the major ‘rap’ genres seems to just be listing Pokémon, which is a little safer than Marvus quite wants to be. But that still means learning an entire bestiary to drop appropriate and relevant punchlines. He honestly doesn’t believe a troll with less hustle than he has would be managing at all.

It’s fine. It’s chill. It’ll all be worth it in the end.

    Character
    Name: Ashe Ubert
    Series: Fire Emblem Three Houses
Timeline: post time skip after chapter 17
    Canon Resource Links: FE Wiki

Personality: Ashe is a nice and friendly young man who’s always ready to help the people closest to him. When he was a child he used to help his parents in their restaurant. However, he lost them to a disease that left him to take care of his two younger siblings. He started to do honest work, until he realized it wouldn’t be enough to take care of all of them. From there he turned into a thief since it was an easier way for him to make a lot of money. One day when he broke into a noble’s house he was going to steal a book, but the cover caught his attention so much that he ended up getting caught by the noble. However, instead of sending him to jail he decided to adopt Ashe and his siblings. After that Ashe became quite grateful to Lonato for giving him a better life. Due to his past as a thief he doesn’t quickly judge people, he’ll want to hear the reason behind what they’re doing instead.

Ashe has a dream of becoming a knight so he’ll be able to better protect his precious people. After being adopted by Lonato and getting to know his adopted brother Christophe, he decided that he wanted to be a knight so he could protect them. He also admires the knights in the books he loves to read that he aspires to be noble in the same way. Even when his classmate Felix tries to tell him that he should aim for something else, Ashe doesn’t take the criticism to heart. He encourages Felix to read the book and they talk about Ashe continuing his dream.

Ashe is able to see beyond many people acts on the surface into the personalities that they hide underneath the mask. He’s able to see the good side that Felix hides with his indifference. He doesn’t mind complimenting a person on their skills either such as the way he tells Annette that he admired her study habits. He’s quick to help out people when they need it, but when it comes to people helping him out he’ll get overwhelmed from it. Ashe helped Mercedes with her cooking and reassured her when she worried that she caused a problem for him. However, when Dedue did a favor for Ashe by cooking him dinner when he came back late, he ended up crying into the meal because he was so overwhelmed from the gesture. Since he took care of his siblings when he was young, he doesn’t expect anyone to do the same for him that when it does happen he’ll react very strongly to it.

He’s optimistic and tries to do his best to look on the bright side to things or hope for another outcome if it can happen. During the war he let Byleth know that he kept faith that one day Byleth would return. When he returned to the monastery after the five year time skip he didn’t stop believing that Dedue would come back to them alive or that Dimitri would get the help he needed. Ashe will continue to hope, until there are signs that he should put it aside.

He’ll lift up the people around him whenever they talk down about themselves, but when it comes to himself he doesn’t see the same things. When Petra commends him for being able to barter with shopkeepers Ashe will let her know it’s not a big thing. He does the same to Dimitri when he complimented him on how quickly and efficiently he does chores. Ashe will let him know that it’s nothing and he’s used to doing it. Ashe views himself as a commoner that doesn’t have as many skills as the people in his house or the ones he befriends outside his house. Many people around him will reassure him that he’s much more than he thinks.

While he may be happy and friendly there are times when he has to control his anger. After he learned that Catherine, one of the instructors, was responsible for his brother’s death he confronted her about it. He accepted that they would be allies, but he still haven’t forgiven her for turning in his brother. When he told Dedue about what people were saying about him, he was upset on his behalf. He argued with Caspar over punishments for thieves then later on over what he was feeding the cat. Ashe may not get mad often, but when he does he will not hide it.

Ashe is also very loyal to his friends, Byleth, and the Blue Lions house. Something that he shows throughout the game. He will always be there for them and use his power to protect them. Ashe may be gentle on the surface with the way he takes care of cats, the flowers in the greenhouse, and volunteers in the kitchen, yet under that surface is a strong man who will do whatever he can to protect the special people in his life.

    Character
    Name: Millennial Tree Cookie
    Series: Cookie Run
Timeline: After the City of the Millennial Tree event
    Canon Resource Links: Wiki Page

So, the “story” section here is pretty short and vague (because it’s just the flavor text from his in-game character page), so to elaborate on that just a little bit: The Millennial Tree was an ancient (potentially millions of years old, despite the name’s implications) tree which had, over time, developed self-awareness and a degree of magic power. Basically, this tree was a god, in a world where the main sapient species are living, thinking cookies.

The “scarlet curse” referenced was a curse cast by Pomegranate Cookie, acolyte to the Certified Metaplot Big Bad, Dark Enchantress Cookie, which brought afflicted beings’ “darkness” to the surface, effectively turning them evil. The Millennial Tree put itself to sleep to keep itself from wreaking havoc on the world under the curse’s effects, but was revived by a small group of young Cookies, took the form of a Cookie, and proceeded to blast away the curse with a time laser and force Dark Enchantress and Pomegranate to retreat. Now he is here, awake, and determined to save the world in his new Cookie form.

Personality: The Millennial Tree is an ancient and incredibly powerful being, having observed nearly everything on its home continent since its formation, and survived it all - and it shows in Millennial Tree Cookie’s attitude. With the vast stretches of time he’s observed, he’s developed a gently serene attitude that sometimes borders on flippancy; most of what is happening around him at any given time doesn’t seem of much concern in comparison to his own lifetime, and very little strikes him as a true threat to himself. Even after Pomegranate Cookie’s curse on Dark Enchantress Cookie’s behalf forced him to put himself to sleep, he doesn’t seem to consider Dark Enchantress Cookie herself a true threat, describing her plans to cast the world into darkness as “amusing.” Though he will take conflicts seriously in the moment, at least as much as it takes to resolve them, he’s basically unbothered again as soon as they’re over.

Despite that, however, he doesn’t overlook or ignore the shorter-lived beings around him or the minutiae of those lives; after all, he’s used his power to protect the Cookies living around him for centuries, and seems to take on an almost paternal attitude toward them. (Perhaps the most direct example of this is Wind Archer Cookie, the direct creation and protector of the Millennial Tree.) As such, he feels responsible for the continued protection of his world and the Cookies in it, however petty any given threat may seem to him personally; after all, he’s observed for thousands of years, but those millennia were made up of countless individual lives.

Given the importance of those individual lives, he is also willing to do effectively whatever it takes to protect the world they exist in. Obviously, he can’t expect to save every single person Cookie. However, if he’s confident that something is For The Greater Good, he won’t hesitate to go to fairly intense lengths to pull it off and fulfill his mission of protection - even if that means putting himself to sleep for a period of time he couldn’t be sure of to protect the world from himself, or just… using a giant “purifying” time laser to vaporize whatever stands in his way. Not that he does that often, unless you take gameplay as canon, which it likely is not… or else he’s just deleted a lot of cute little mouse farmers from reality.

    Series: Critical Role (Season 2)
    Timeline: After episode 108
    Canon Resource Links: https://criticalrole.fandom.com/wiki/Beauregard_Lionett

Personality: Beau is a self-described asshole. She's abrasive, blunt, and often impatient with people, particularly if she thinks they're beating around the bush or trying to snow her. She has an intense cynical streak, and is frequently the first to question the authenticity of a situation, or the motives of those involved. Much of her attitude and approach to people began as a defense mechanism - she grew up knowing her parents wanted a son, not a daughter, and aware that she was a disappointment, and took to acting out, sabotaging her parents' peers, and undermining their business by bootlegging their product. When she was caught, she was sent away to a Cobalt Soul monastery to have some discipline instilled, which only fueled her feelings of alienation, and when she got word that her parents had another child, this time a boy, her immediate assumption was that they were cutting all ties with her. Her expectation for much of her life has been that she's not particularly valued or wanted, and so she developed a habit of pushing people away, indulging in shallow relationships and brief flirtations because she fears rejection, and she can't be rejected if something has no meaning, or if she walks away first.

Over her months with the Mighty Nein, her attitude has begun to mellow - here are people with whom she feels a connection, who she's grown willing to fight and die for, and who are willing to do the same for her. While a lifetime of abrasiveness, sarcasm, and reflexive hostility can't be unlearned overnight, she has been working on developing a more neutral approach, and on her people skills, seeking advice with some frequency from Fjord, who typically serves as the face for the group. It's very much a work in progress, and she is very much still prickly, impatient, and unlikely to ever be one of nature's charmers, but she is trying.

Another significant change in her behaviour during her time with the Mighty Nein is that despite her cynicism, she has begun actively attempting to help people, rather than primarily acting in self-interest, with occasional flashes of conscience. The initial catalyst for this was the death of Mollymauk Tealeaf, one of the original members of the Mighty Nein; while she clashed with him constantly, after his death, she adopted his personal philosophy of trying to leave the places he went better than he found them. She isn't always successful, and her methods - and those of the Nein in general - tend more towards damaging or dismantling harmful elements than introducing positive ones, but she does try.

Beau's upbringing and her parents' decision to send her away to the monastery has left Beau with a strong anti-authoritarian streak. She dislikes being told what to do, is suspicious of people in positions of authority, and is even more cynical about power structures and those inhabiting them than she is about people in general. The irony of her having come into a position of power with the Cobalt Soul is not lost on her, and she believes it's her responsibility to investigate corruption and speak truth to power - or, on occasion, punch power in the face.

Beau does have some genuine good qualities, in addition to her attempts to use negative qualities to positive ends. When she does bond with someone, she is intensely loyal, and will go to the ends of the earth to protect and aid those she cares about. She's also remarkably accepting of people's past transgressions - to her, it's what they do and who they are in the present that counts, though she is aware that who people are is shaped by who they were. While she struggles with expressing sympathy, she does have a core of compassion, and is more than willing to listen to a friend who needs a willing ear, or a sounding board for a personal dilemma.

While she will sometimes play off her knowledge as something she just picked up somewhere, Beau is a voracious reader and a decent scholar. She keeps copious notes on the events and people who catch her attention, and is skilled at both investigating and at drawing connections, though given free rein to chase off after an idea, she may well come off sounding more like someone's conspiracy web than a reasoned and logical individual.

    Character
    Name: Dedue Molinaro
    Series: Fire Emblem: Three Houses
    Timeline: Azure Moon, post-Chapter 18
Canon Resource Links: come get y’all dejuice

    Personality:
A giant man of few words and fewer facial expressions, Dedue’s first impressions tend to come off as standoffish at best and downright hostile at worst. This is compounded by the fact that usually, the initial words he offers to strangers are some variation of “Stay away from me.”

Of course, though, he is not so simple.

For one, Dedue doesn’t see the point in idle chatter, preferring to listen and observe, and only to speak when he feels something is worth saying. On occasion, he may speculate or reminisce if it may contribute to the topic, but for the most part he only states facts or his train of thought when he’s asked for it. This does make things somewhat awkward at times, given that he doesn’t seem to mind staring silently at another person while he waits for them to carry on the conversation or to leave.

Even before engaging in most conversations, though, Dedue attempts to warn people off. His logic is simple: he is a man of Duscur, which, in Fodlan, means he is hated and suspected of regicide by most. Therefore, anyone in his company is likely to see their reputation suffer in the eyes of their peers; surely anyone who would associate with such a person would also turn on their allies and commit atrocities. Dedue isn’t antagonistic by nature, and in fact, believes he is doing people a favor by pushing them away. However cruel they may be to him, he very rarely bothers even to dispute anyone’s biases, admitting that bad people existed in Duscur as well as Faerghus, and some may well have contributed to the king’s assassination.

In reality, it’s unclear whether or not Dedue has always been so stern. He speaks fondly of his family and appears to have had a pleasant childhood before the Tragedy of Duscur. Being one of very few survivors from his homeland and the only from is family, he does tend to be closed off. With most people, it takes a while of warming up to get Dedue to speak of his family or his past life. Often, he thinks of his childhood when cooking, as he learned with his mother and sister, and he tends flowers that were native to Duscur, but he does not actively share this sentiment unless pressed or encouraged.

The person he is most comfortable with is Dimitri, who saved his life at the time of the Tragedy, despite Dimitri losing his own father in the slaughter. Because of that mercy, Dedue has sworn a life oath to Dimitri, and is inexhaustibly devoted to him. Others have even described him as blindly obedient, a claim which Dedue himself does not deny. He admits that he would follow Dimitri’s orders without question, even if it involved the slaughter of innocents. It is clear, though, that he trusts Dimitri’s judgment, even though he can lose control of himself. Dedue perceives Dimitri’s hysteric pursuit of justice as compassion for the souls lost, ultimately finding him to be a bleeding heart, a trait that he admires about Dimitri.

The reality is that as the only survivors, Dedue and Dimitri have clung to each other as anchors ever since the Tragedy, inspiring one another to go on living despite their losses. There is nothing left of Dedue’s family or homeland, and so Dimitri has become his life; he cannot imagine a life anywhere but by the prince’s side. Similarly, he is willing to die for Dimitri at any moment, as his life was as good as forfeit before Dimitri saved him from the slaughter.

Ultimately, Dedue is a gentle soul who values kindness and thinks of others before himself. It isn’t that his confidence suffers, though he admits to having struggled with it in the past, but rather that he chooses to live for the sake of others. He gets along well with those who make an effort to know him, and those who don’t let biases sour their opinion of him. It’s true that he will always have an outwardly callous demeanor, but just beneath that is a good-natured person whose loyalty will stand any test.

    Victory Road Sample:
A swarm of Grass-types nearly seven feet tall approaches the Goldenrod. It’s a veritable woodland monster, slowly encroaching upon the city in an effort to take back what was stolen from nature, and it seems that the urban Pokemon want to join it. A line forms behind it as it stalks the city. The amalgam of Pokemon is hungry, it’s hunting, it’s… walking through the doors of the Pokemon Center.

Human guests part before it in horror. Certain Pokemon who are healthy and able, on the other hand, approach it just as those from outside do. Those well-trained stay with their human counterparts, but most still whine as if they, too, feel the temptation to join the grim march.

The brave Joy at the counter who stands her ground as it approaches, however, bears witness to the vaguely person-shaped swarm extending “arms” comprised of twirling Gossifleur and wiggling Hoppip. As human hands poke out from underneath all the Pokemon, they reach high among Cherubi and more Gossifleur, picking up the single Bounsweet nestled among them and revealing the top half of a face.

Now, at least, some of the Pokemon part, crawling over what must be a man’s shoulders and onto his back. His head is almost fully uncovered, though considering the irritation and weight of so many critters crawling all over him, his expression is surprisingly… flat. There may be just a hint of dead-inside in those eyes, but frustration is completely absent. Which is somehow more concerning than unadulterated fury would be.

“Nurse,” he finally speaks in greeting, polite but succinct. His head tilts down as he observes the various Pokemon clinging to the fabric of his clothes, peering between some Budew and finding the evolved form hiding amongst them. “My Roselia.”

Dedue takes the Pokemon gently in his hands, and as soon as it’s separated from the rest of the swarm, the nurse can see how flustered it looks. In fact, all of the other Pokemon’s eyes turn to Roselia as Dedue tenderly sets it on the counter.

The poor little thing is practically blushing, covering its face with the flowers of its hands. Every last one of its fans seem all but ready to pounce on it, but its trainer keeps his hands in a protective fortress around it.

“It used Sweet Scent for the first time. How do you turn it off?”

    Name: Mollymauk Tealeaf
    Series: Critical Role (Campaign 2)
Timeline: Post episode-26 (spoilers in white) (after his death.)
    Canon Resource Links: Wiki page!

Personality: The first thing that will stand out about Mollymauk is that he’s a liar. He lies constantly, and lying comes about as easily to him as breathing. He’s described himself as someone who “doesn’t trust the truth,” and he’ll take the fun and security of a lie over the vulnerability and viciousness of honesty any day. Molly’s a natural entertainer, and enjoys being the centre of attention. He’s also very hedonistic, seeking pleasure and excitement constantly, stating that he’ll experience anything at least once.

In terms of his flaws, on the one hand, he can be kind of an asshole. He scams people without a second thought, is rude to people he doesn’t like, and has no respect for other people’s boundaries. He’s willing to manipulate people to get what he wants, and doesn’t mind making them uncomfortable if needed. But at the same time, he has a strong personal moral code that he concedes to, even if his moral values are occasionally a little sketchy. The phrase “You don’t fuck with good people” can summarize his beliefs pretty well.

He likes to make people happy, often overpaying for things in order to cheer people up, and is concerned about how people treat each other. He taught Nott “not to steal from happy people” and in general didn’t want her to take from people who couldn’t afford it. As a fortune-teller, he always tries to help people with his fortunes, even if they are all bullshit in the end. He also never judges people by what they’ve done or the kind of person they used to be. He’s not even particularly offended when people wrong him, unless they’re a dick about it – understanding that people tend to be assholes and do what they have to do to survive.

Under the effects of a truth spell, he stated that he likes to think he’s a good guy, though there was quite a lot of hesitation before he gave that answer, implying that he’s not completely sure. He also believes that he left “every town better than he found it”, suggesting that he actively made an effort to make people’s lives better wherever he went.

Molly is also pretty arrogant, and wants everyone to conform to his ideas about how groups should work. He’s confident in himself, and when he’s teaching someone a “lesson”, believes he’s smart enough not to do anything wrong – and can therefore do morally sketchy things without feeling any guilt for it. In other words, if he thinks he’s in the right he believes that he can do no wrong.

He’s affectionate with the people he cares about, and in general, he’s very protective of the groups he stays with, once he’s come to trust them. He believes that it’s vital that they take care of each other, and is very loyal to his companions. He doesn’t like being alone at all - in fact, Molly has literally no memories of being alone at any time in his life. The idea of ever being on his own terrifies him. He also doesn’t like staying in one place for too long, believing that inevitably people will start to believe that he and his group are a problem if things get serious.

He also has a strong aversion to ever exploring his missing past. He actually considers his past self, “Lucien”, to be a different person from him entirely whose body he simply took over, and he doesn’t want anyone else’s baggage in his head affecting him.

The last thing Mollymauk remembers is dying. And now, he’s woken up in a completely unfamiliar place, as a… human? It seems.

Everything feels wrong, in more ways than one. His tail and horns are gone, vanished completely, and he can’t even recognise his own skin, which is no longer the lavender it used to be. Even the way he sees the world itself feels different to before. His tattoos have stayed, though, and it gives him a little bit of comfort to know that not everything has changed.

So far… he’d much prefer to go back to being a tiefling, thank you very much… But hey, he’s alive, which is more than he could’ve hoped for after what just happened to him - so he’s sure as hell going to make the most of it!

    …Now, where is he?

After enjoying a nice conversation with his not-mother, who seems like a lovely woman, Molly manages to figure out a little more about the place he’s found himself in. And what’s particularly interesting is the Pokémon. Apparently, he owns one himself – which leads to where he’s found himself now, outside of the house in the middle of the town, looking straight in the eyes of a ghostly, violet-coloured Oricorio.

Is this thing really supposed to fit in that tiny ball? He examines the Pokéball in his hands – it’d been explained to him by his “mother”, but he really doesn’t understand how it’s supposed to work. Magic, probably. It seems cruel to keep it locked up in that tiny ball, though… Maybe it’s more comfortable than it looks on the inside?

Either way, for a creature that’s apparently incredibly powerful, Oricorio looks rather fragile. …It’s nice to not be alone, though. It hits him, then, that this is the first time he’s been without people around him. Sure, there’s the strangers who seem to live in this town, but he doesn’t know them.

They’re not talking to him. Being alone is… not something he ever wanted to experience, to be honest.

But he’s not, is he? He has Oricorio, at least. ]

So, you seem fun. [ He's squatting down to meet it at eye level, and speaking in a casual tone. ] Here's hoping you don't die on me.

    Series: Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Timeline: Post-timeskip, Great Tree Moon, before Battle at Gronder Field
    Canon Resource Links: https://fireemblem.fandom.com/wiki/Annette

    Personality:
On the surface, Annette seems to exude a spirit of cheerfulness and positivity, but anyone who takes the time and effort to get to know her will eventually come to learn that she's actually secretly cheerful and positive on the inside, too. An intelligent and aspiring magic user, she's not especially gifted in her chosen field of study, beyond the boons granted by her minor Crest. At least not compared to some of her classmates back in her Academy days, to whom advanced magic often seemed to come easily. However, what set her apart from most others was her indomitable work ethic and perseverance. Even now, five years after her school days abruptly ended, she continues to apply her unflagging diligence and dedication to the war effort.

It was her hard work that brought her to the Garreg Mach Monastery to begin with, questing to find her father by relentlessly pursuing excellence at Fhirdiad's School of Sorcery, all to obtain a recommendation to Garreg Mach's Officer Academy. Once at the Academy, even after she found her father, she refused to pause or rest, making the most of her opportunities for study and self-improvement. Even when faced with actually insurmountable challenges like learning how to cook, she accepted failure with equanimity and would not shy away from continued attempts towards success.

As long as Annette feels her time is well spent, she is content spending as much of it as necessary, be it on studying, shopping, maintaining friendships, training, or chores, particularly cleaning. She simply does not feel comfortable lazing about, and would prefer to keep her days full and busy. There is just so much she wants to do, at any given moment, and only so much time in the day to do it. Sometimes, she gets too carried away by all the possibilities she sees before her and winds up fumbling in her energetic haste. Often, this includes literal fumbling, as despite her magical and martial skills, she remains quite clumsy in the general vicinity of anything she could potentially trip or stumble over. It is not as if she is unable to focus, as evidenced by her impressive attention span, but almost as if her mind is keeping itself busy by thinking of far more numerous and important things than her immediate surroundings. Fortunately, her mental fortitude and resilience allow her to take these setbacks in stride and get right back up again. Even when things get out of hand, or her plans fall apart.

Her cheerful demeanor, while sincere and genuine, does belie a deeper ferocity that comes out when she sees someone in need of defending. This protective streak runs particularly deep with her friends and those she cares about, but extends to many others in need. This is what keeps her spirits up during the grueling war, even when facing enemies she would rather not fight. She fights to protect those dear to her, and the people of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus.

Her two secret passions, that she strives to keep from her friends and the general public, are her loves of eating, and of singing whimsical, fun songs that she invents herself. In particular, her sweet tooth is the less well kept of the two, especially when most of her attempts at cooking or baking wind up becoming very publicly disastrous affairs, replete with chaos and often explosions. She is intensely embarrassed whenever she is caught singing to herself, even when the reception is generally positive and appreciative. Like every other setback in her life, however, neither discovery of her singing nor explosions in the kitchen have ever stopped her from continuing to enjoy her hobbies.

"Ok, so this device says you're an...Igglybuff? Am I saying that right?"

    "Iggly!"

"Well, that sounded like a yes...or are you telling me to call you Iggly for short?"

    "Buff..."

"And that definitely sounded like a no. You're certainly very expressive considering we don't understand each other's language. Or, wait! You do understand me, right?"

    "Igglybuff!"

"Amazing! I wonder, do all, er...Pokémon, is that it? Do all Pokémon understand people?"

The tiny Igglybuff doesn't seem to have an answer, and goes back to munching daintily on a berry. Annette shakes her head in wonder, and goes back to reading the trainer's handbook she had been thoughtfully provided. Such a strange place, this was. At least this much was comforting and familiar. Reading and studying was something she could do, to make sense of it all.

"Ok, so this book says you like these berries, and it even has some other ideas for how to properly feed you...but I wonder if I could make a pie out of them or, ooh! What about some tiny little tarts! Though of course I’d need a kitchen first, I guess. Unless…"

Annette eyes the tiny pink Pokémon with a dangerously excited gleam. “One time while we were out on a mission, way back in our student days, Mercie told me about a thing she had heard of, a…solar oven, I think? It used reflected sunlight to bake bread! I don’t have anything super shiny right now, but maybe I can find something, and try baking for us both! How does that sound, little one? It’s only sunlight, I’m sure nothing could go wrong, right?”

She tucks a blade of grass to mark the page on berries for later. She pauses to look around herself, enjoying the mild breeze meandering through the sun-dappled glen, keeping an eye on the tall grass over by the tree line. The book said to watch out for different kinds of Pokémon in the taller grasses, and she was currently unarmed. As for her magic…she wasn’t yet ready to think about that. She’d worked so hard, for so many years, to be great at magic. So many nights falling asleep in the library, so many days spent training from meal to meal, and now, poof! All of it gone. As if by…

“As if by magic, hah! Good job not thinking about it, Annette! Well, it does no good to sit and mope around, does it? I guess I have something new to work hard at, for however long I’m here, right? And who knows, maybe I’ll be the first person to figure out magic in this world! Yeah!”

She grins at her Igglybuff, who smiles back, fed and content now, and not bouncing around causing Annette no end of worry that she would hurt herself.

“No reason, no magic, just Pokémon!
I’ll find me a reason to carry on!
    Maybe I’ll find magic,
    And maybe I’ll just train,
And I’ll be the greatest phenomenon!”

She giggles, then gasps, as her Igglybuff starts to echo the melody of her little song. “No no no, wait…oh?”

She doesn’t feel sleepy this time, not even a little. “Oh! So you can sing without putting me to sleep? Oh well done! Very good! We should practice that more! Training is very important, and I would know. You’re definitely a much better singer than me, but I can help you train that natural talent of yours properly. Let’s see, this book his has a whole section on training, I saw that in the table of contents, let’s go check it out together…”

    Character
    Name: Shard
Series: Sonic the Hedgehog - Archie Comics
Timeline: Sonic Universe #50 - after the fight with Metal Sonic

    Canon Resource Links:
Shard on the: Sonic Wiki and Archie Sonic Wiki.

    Personality:
Shard began life as a weapon; an emotionless killer, meant to mimic and surpass the capabilities of his creator’s hated rival. But eventually that need to be the superior hedgehog- and to prove himself superior- took more and more priority over his core programming of serving Dr. Robotnik, and after being abandoned following multiple failed attempts, grew into an independent, cocksure personality - that was still dead set on proving its superiority to Sonic. The final steps of Metal Sonic’s evolution into Shard came from his attempt to do so. After kidnapping Miles “Tails” Prower and challenging Sonic to a death race for his safety, their words and actions, their refusal to abandon each other in the face of death, convince Metal Sonic that truly surpassing his limitations and proving his strength meant choosing life; abandoning his quest to best Sonic and apparently sacrificing himself to save them. A bit cliche, to be sure, but this is a comic book and we’ve got terribly dubbed 90’s OVAs to reference here. And, because this is a comic book, of course it wasn’t actually the end for Shard.

Over ten real years and one hundred and fifty issues later, Shard took the last step of his journey as he was rebuilt in a new body, his personality and memories preserved in his gemstone power core and now determined to atone for his past actions and prove he’d actually learned the lessons of his past. His sense of superiority remained; and in fairness, he is objectively physically superior to most of the people around him, organic or mechanical. After his rebuilding, however, it also helps serve to cover for his insecurities regarding his isolation from those around him; the average people of New Mobitropolis would fear him, and as far as he’s concerned they would be right to do so in light of his past. A major part of the reason he seeks to defend the city and its people is directly stated to be an effort to eventually assuage these fears, and make it possible for him to connect to people outside of his team. Until such a time comes, however, he has to keep his existence secret from almost everyone; he’s shown particularly wanting to connect with Sonic’s family, including Sonic’s Uncle Chuck, the one that rebuilt his current body. He’s only shown interacting with his team in the context of their missions; he’s comfortable working with them, and there’s no real animosity, but the only person he’s shown connecting with on a personal basis is another AI, frequently visiting the computer interface that forms her network and entering into a virtual space with her. Another significant part of his cover for these insecurities is the level of snark Shard sprinkles into his conversation. It’s free, it goes everywhere. Though as much as it’s a cover, a big part of it is also just that Shard is a snarky sassy boy.

Shard is very notably action-oriented, rushing into fights and acting impulsively in the face of danger. When a teammate falls into an open pit, he immediately leaps to the rescue, despite the fact that they’re on a mission which requires stealth and his mode of flight is notably noisy. When the current Metal Sonic attacks, taking a hostage, Shard rushes off to face him and draw him away from the city. Despite this, Shard isn’t a total meathead. During a virtual chess match, he’s capable of reasoning out that if the goal is to take out the enemy king, in said virtual environment where the pieces are bigger than him, there’s technically no reason to not just physically blast the king. Likewise, he’s capable of reasoning during a combat mission that blowing apart the arcane ritual their enemy is conducting will ensure their goal with more certainty than engaging the enemy in combat would. As brash and violent as Shard can be, he’s also capable of reaching out to enemies in situations similar to his own. When fighting another version of Metal Sonic, he recognizes that it too is more than a simple drone, capable of reasoning and thinking, he tries pushing it to break its own programming the way he did, only regretfully going for a killing blow once it became clear that Metal Sonic’s built-in failsafes wouldn’t allow it to gain any kind of independence. This attempt at redemption was strong enough that it led to Shard’s own near death, giving Metal Sonic time to determine that Shard’s gem power core was also his weakness, self-destructing and cracking the gem along with heavily damaging Shard’s physical body.
